It is all well and good issuing a recall, but what about those who have already given the baby formula to their child, and what alternatives do they have?

We recently learned of a mother who said that her child had started to get a tummy upset due to the Similac baby formula, but Abbott has announced on a number of occasions that there has been no reports of illness due to the recall.

As for what parents can do if their child has already taken the formula, Dr. Jane Chikkala has said “they’ll likely be okay,” which is according to a report on WTOL.

Parents will need to find an alternative to the Similac baby formula, just remember that you will need to make certain that it is from the same group, if your child has been on a soy formula, then make certain that you swap to a soy formula from another brand.

Abbott said that they are very understanding on this issue, and although they were very slow in the information on this recall – they now have a huge amount of advice for not only parents but caregivers as well.

The first thing that they can do is visit the recall lookup page to check their lot numbers, which we recently reported. Also Abbott has a consumer hotline running 24/7, (888) 376-2054.

Jerry Reth of Health.Spreadit is saying there are a large group of people who think all young children should be breast-fed. This recall could start a battle between women who have been pushing for this, and the formula companies.

Some have even said that formulas should only be available via prescription, and these ideas are getting more support from the general public following the Similac 2010 Recall. The company will probably lose a lot of customers for good now, even though they worked with the FDA, who said no health risks were linked with the affected products.

We have had a lot of comments from our readers worried about the product, with quite a few complaining their children have had symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea. There is no proof this is related, but it is a big worry for parents. This will lead to many saying breastfeed.

The reason behind this was due to the recent Similac baby formula recall from Abbott, which is seen as one of the most concerning recalls of 2010.

Stacey Bradford from CBS MoneyWatch has been following this story closely and has a valid point when she says that we do not always get a guarantee of quality when paying for a pricey brand – do you think that she has a point?

A huge percentage of parents always want to give their child the best, and having a big named brand like Abbott is one of them. However, we have to ask ourselves what are we really paying for?

Bradford explains that all formula sold is required to meet a certain standard, this applies to named and generic brands – so what are we really paying for Stacey asks?

The answer she thinks is simple, marketing and advertising. Do you think that it is time to start looking at generic brands instead of the over priced named ones?

Now we have learnt the website has crashed again due to the huge demand.

To recap we first told you about the recall yesterday which affects around 5 million of the company’s powdered baby formula. The formula which is being recalled can be found in some Caribbean countries, Guam, Puerto Rico and the US.

The problem with the baby formula is that a common beetle may be found in the product. Not all of the Similac formulas are part of the recall, only those found in plastic containers and are in 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans. If consumed children may have symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomfort and refusing to eat.

As you would imagine the Similac website for looking at the lot numbers came under huge demand, so much that Alan Ng reported that the site stopped working for a while.

However, we can now tell you that the site is now working, as they have now fixed the issues causing the downtime. Alan also gave us details on the list of affected formulas, which was certain to be worrying parents.

If for any reason the website goes down yet again, then you can get all the lot numbers by visiting news.spreadit.org. It is reported that 5 million cans of the formula is begin recalled, and looking at all those lot number – we can see why.

Considering how important this particular recall is, we are not surprised to see the website struggling to cope with traffic, but the same time – is it really good enough?

They have provided a website for consumers to check lot numbers for their products, but what good is it, if the website doesn’t load, it just adds to the drama for many parents.

Ive entered the website url a few times now, and I can confirm that it is loading pretty slow. It does load, but you have to wait a long time to get in.

As we previously told you, those of you with liquid similac products are not affected by this recall. If you are searching for a list of the products, we can tell you that it includes Similac Expert Care Alimentum, Elecare, Similac Neosure, and Similac Human Milk Fortifier.

If you have any of the products mentioned above, you’ll be pleased to know that you are not affected in any way. For those of you who do not see your Similac product on the list, you are advised to contact Abbott’s consumer hotline on (800) 986-8850.
