Virtual Worlds Connect: Second Life, Linden Lab and IBM
Filed under: Computers

Its one thing having Virtual Worlds where you can do almost anything but having these worlds connect just takes on all new meaning to what’s possible.
The creators of IBM, Linden Lab and Second Life have made it possible to teleport avatars from an Opensim virtual world server and Second Life’s Preview Grid; this will have a massive impact on the future of virtual worlds.
Imagine being able to visit one virtual world and then seamlessly move to another virtual world of your choice, what would that mean for you and also businesses?
We are waiting to hear when the interoperability protocol will be available but this will move virtual worlds into another stage of evolution, one that will improve both user experience and business potential.
Developers will have a field day with this new technology and what they can create with it thanks to plans for Linden Lab to make Second Life extensions open source and IBM giving extensions to the Opensim community.
What will the ability to move between Virtual Worlds mean to you?

Google’s Lively vs IBM Metaverse and Second Life Virtual World
Filed under: News

There is a new player in the Virtual World game and this time it comes from Google in the shape of something Lively, how will this new service from Google compare to IBM’s Metaverse and Second Life?
Second Life may not be the best designed Virtual World but it was at the right place at the right time, it became very popular fast and also received a lot of bad press.
The business and enterprise use of Second Life has been clear all along, although we have seen vandalism in Second Life just like you would in the real world.
IBM’s virtual world engine was designed with something different in mind and is aimed for corporate use, it can provide what Second Life cannot and that’s real secure conversation for businesses.
Where will Google Lively stand in all this and does it have any use for enterprise? Larry Dignan on ZDNet blogs aims to find out in his article about the big three key players in the Virtual World.
Google has taken the Virtual World to another level as it does with many products and services it launches, they will let you furnish your virtual room and dress up your avatar in expression with a new dimension.

Google’s Lively: Second Life in a web browser
Filed under: Computers, Software

In the last 24 hours, Google has introduced another innovative product and this one is like Second Life in a web browser, the 3D chat room plug-in is called Lively.
One of the best ways to spread the word about a new product or service is with social networking and blogs, how about being able to embed the very product into those blogs and sites through an iframe embed code.
Google’s Lively will bring another dimension of the web and while it’s only 20 percent complete, this portable 3D space will let you interact with visitors via avatars and build rooms.
With many chat rooms having been the talk of dodgy discussions in the past, it seems Lively 3D chat rooms have been able to only have activities in the G to PG range.
Lively has been made with simplicity in mind and its extremely easy to install the plug-in and the embed code is something everyone has come to use and know in other applications. This is only a Google Labs beta phase, but if it gets enough attention here then we could see the web getting more Lively.
Although Lively is still a clunky beta, Ars Technica has given the service a full hands-on review. Could you get use to Lively’s cartoony environments?
