Full-body scan trials have been taking place at a number of U.S. airports before passengers board plans – this is something that will become a mandatory part of the screening process very soon, according to the TSA. It is hoped that this will become a deterrent against terrorism.

One of the first airports to use this technology was O’Hare International Airport, there is only one there at the moment but more will be made available by the end of the year, this is according to federal and city officials. One of the biggest fears for plane travel is suicide bombers, this is just one of a number of steps to help deter them.

Each scanner costs between $130,000 and $170,000 each, and the Transportation Security Administration has announced that hundreds of these machines will be sent to all major airports in the U.S.

21 airports are already using these new full-body scanners, which produce a low-dose X-ray to penetrate clothing to see if a passenger is concealing a weapon, explosive or any other item considered dangerous.
