There was a time when most of your friends and family would not own sat-nav devices, but today this is not the case with a recent report stating that the UK is “over-reliant” on the use of GPS, so much so that it now has become a matter of national security.

You can read the full report on raeng.org.uk, Royal Academy of Engineering. Most new cars have satellite navigation built-in, and we doubt most people even have a map in their car, let alone use one. What would you do if there were a natural disaster that wiped out GPS signals? The report highlights this and other possibilities.

We are starting to move into a period that our sun will be more active than normal, and while this might not lead to a 2012 type event (end of the world), we could see a large solar flare cause problems to our electronics. The impact of such an event would be devastating; our world is completely connected by electronics, which includes the use of GPS for businesses that provide services.

You will find GPS is a vital part of our financial system, not to mention emergency services, railways, and shipping. Even simple jamming equipment could cause major problems to the UK infrastructure. The report states that Western countries rely on satellite radio navigation for 6-7% of GDP.

Have a read of the full report here, and let us know your thoughts.

We all know how fast technology changes, but things seem a bit more civilized when it comes to GPS systems. Yes they do come out with new models, but not at the rate that new smartphone models do. However, the likes of TomTom do offer constant updates to their software to make certain that you are always up-to-date. One such device is the TomTom XL 335T.

This GPS device has been with us for a few months now, but is still one of the better ones on the market. There are other options from other brands, but there are those of you who just want to stick with TomTom. The UK gets a bum deal though, as they have to pay for their map updates, whereas the U.S does not.

The TomTom XL 335T has a 4.3-Inch widescreen touchscreen display, so makes it much easier to use while driving. There are over 7 million pre-loaded points of interest, so there will never be any excuses of being bored while out for a Sunday morning drive.

For those of you looking for something a little cheaper or more expensive, then Reviewgist has a comparison of three other TomTom devices; the TomTom Go 740, TomTom Go 920 and the TomTom One 125. The first scored the same as the XL 335T, 83%, while the other two scored 75% and 66% respectively. For those of you on a lower budget, maybe you should consider the TomTom Ease.

Which of the four devices have you got, or do you have something different?

I can still remember the time I bought my first GPS system, it had limited features but still came with a premium price tag. We all know how things change, and you only have to look at the TomTom EASE to know just what we are talking about.

How can something with so many features only cost $80? And we can expect that price to fall in the coming days and weeks, as we get ever closer to the holiday shopping season. Who said you have to spend a couple of hundred dollars to get you from A to B?

The TomTom EASE has a 3.5-inch TFT LCD touchscreen display, which has been vastly improved over the years. The directions are spoken to you as they are on most other sat-navs, IQ Routes technology, Pre-loaded points of interest, Speed alerts are just some of the other features.

So we know that the Ease will not offer traffic reports and some of the other features that come as standard on the top of the range GPS systems. However, if you are looking for something that will get you where you need to go for a fraction of the price, then the TomTom Ease is that product. For more details visit Walmart. Check out some of these Best Buy Black Friday GPS deals.

Whenever you are asked the question “What are the best US road trips,” it is often hard to answer. There are so many factors to think off, and the fact that we always seem to think of Nation Lampoons, would put anyone off who was planning a trip.

U.S. road trips used to be a huge deal a few years back, as it would often takes weeks if not months of planning – but technology has made things much easier. Not only can you rely on GPS instead of paper maps to get you where you need to go, you can also research your stop-offs and book your rooms in advance on the Internet.

There are those who refuse to use such technology and do things the old fashioned way – but those people are certainly a dying breed. I used to always use maps to plan my route or use an online route planner, it was only a couple of years ago that I decided to start using a GPS.

OK I know what you are thinking, but I just liked the idea of making most of the decisions myself. However, now I wonder what I ever did without my sat-nav, it has certainly helped me out on a number of occasions.

Are the best US road trips made with or without GPS?

Garmin has not had a very nice couple of days due to its Nuvi recall over overheating issues, but that has not stopped them announcing the Edge 800 GPS for cyclists. The device comes with a 2.6-inch touchscreen display, which not only uses BaseCamp but BirdsEye satellite imagery as well.

Garmin knows that keeping a GPS signal is very important, so has incorporated HotFix technology into the design. The release date will be some time in October and will cost from $449 – $649, the price difference is due to a choice of different bundles.

The new Garmin Edge 800 comes with a host of cool support features such as: cadence sensors, heart rate monitors and a range of other ANT+ devices. Donald Melanson from Engadget tells us that early reviews are good for the new GPS device, but the true test comes once it comes to market.

Garmin looks as though they will back the Touchscreen Edge 800 heavily, you will know just what I mean once you read their preview of the device. Visit the Garmin website now for extensive details.
