Despite its ongoing battle through the courts with Apple, Samsung’s Galaxy series of devices have mainly proved to be a big success for the company. Not resting on its laurels the company is upgrading some of its products with the Samsung Galaxy S II and Galaxy Tab 8.9 both getting LTE compatibility.

Samsung has announced it is to upgrade both devices, which will be on display at the IFA event in Berlin according to PCWorld. They will have quicker processor speeds as well as the ability to connect to LTE on three different frequency bands that are used in Europe.

The updated models will be available at the start of 2012, and will have new 1.5GHz Snapdragon processors powering them. There is currently no information from Samsung about pricing for the devices though. The updated Galaxy S II LTE and the Galaxy Tab 8.9 will both operate on 800 MHz, 1.8GHz, and 2.6GHz LTE networks.

The countries that currently use this technology in Europe include Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Norway, Poland, Lithuania, and Sweden. The 2.6GHz band is set to be the one that most countries will be taking up, and will also be used in parts of Africa, Asia Pacific and Latin America.

Meanwhile the 1.8GHz frequency will be used in the Middle East and Asia Pacific. Currently Europeans have been able to access LTE using modems, but once devices become available with LTE compatibility the technology will pick up speed in availability.

When there is no LTE service available the devices can revert back to the slower 2G and 3G data networks. 4G networks can’t currently carry voice calls, so the device may switch data traffic over to a 3G network while a call is taking place. LTE smartphones have suffered from some battery life problems in the US, and users often switch the 4G radio off when not in use to increase battery performance.

We’ve known about the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 tablet for quite some time now, and we’ve even provided our readers with the specs and the price for the Wi-Fi version. What we didn’t know however was when exactly the much-anticipated device would be arriving.

However, according to a recent article over on the wirelessgoodness.com website, the Wi-Fi only version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 – known as the GT-P7310 – has recently won approval from the FCC, so I think we can safely say that the US release is imminent.

As the FCC filings show, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 will come with dual-band (802.11 a/b/g/n) Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. It also features a 2MP front-facing camera, a 3MP rear camera, two speakers and an 8.9-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9, which is incredibly thin at just 8.6mm (at its thickest point), is powered by a dual-core processor and will be running Android 3.0 Honeycomb, although it could be receiving an upgrade to Android 3.1. The Galaxy Tab 8.9 will come in both 16GB and 32GB models.

Are you thinking about purchasing the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 Android tablet?

The saga between Samsung and Apple has taken a new turn, as a judge wants to see the Samsung Galaxy S2, Tab 8.9 and 10.1 to see if they have in fact been inspired by the iPhone and iPad. We all know by now that the Korean consumer electronics maker denies such a thing, but it must be a bitter pill for them to swallow handing over their handsets and tablets.

The company has 30 days to comply with the request, which also includes the Droid Charge and the Infuse 4G. In cases like this they normally have 3 months to handover samples, but according to Court House News this has had to be reduced as the products that are due for release may cause confusion, as they are not only described but also packaged in a similar way to Apple products.

Apple has tried to force Samsung not to release these products in the past, but all attempts have failed so far. Apple might have to go one step further and take out some sort of injunction to stop Samsung from selling some of the above products. Currently the judge has not taken any sides just yet, but agreed that it did warrant a closer look at the devices in question.

Apple is doing all they can to help things go their way, so much so that they have provide the courts with images of said Samsung products. This issue can still go on for months, so we really do not know where this will leave Samsung, as some of the devices are due to be released shortly.

Do you think that Apple has a strong case against Samsung?

Now that Samsung has officially announced the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 we thought that people would be interested to see how much they cost, well today we have the prices for the WiFi-only variants of these new tablets.

The 16GB Galaxy Tab 8.9 (WiFi-only) will cost you $469, however if you want you can double the storage for an extra $100, therefore the 32GB Galaxy Tab 8.9 (WiFi-only) costs $569.

If you want to buy the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi-only you can get the 16GB model for $499 and the 32GB model for $599, again you pay an extra $100 for double the storage, however don’t forget that there is a micoSD memory card slot for additional storage.

Currently we cannot confirm how much you will have to pay for these new tablets with 3G / 4G data connectivity, however we are sure that carriers will subsidize the price when you agree a contract.

When we hear more regarding 3G / 4G pricing we will keep you posted, what do you think of the WiFi only prices?

News is coming in thick and fast from CTIA 2011, we have just heard that Samsung’s next-gen tablets are thinner and lighter than the iPad 2, this is the case for both the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and the Galaxy Tab 10.1, we wonder what Apple think about this.

The iPad 2 is just 8.8mm thin, making it thinner than the 13mm thick original iPad and the 11.98mm Samsung Galaxy Tab, according to IntoMobile the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 models will both be just 8.6 thick.

When you compare weights you see that Samsung’s next-gen tablets are also lighter than the iPad 2, again according to IntoMobile the Galaxy Tab 8.9 will weigh just 470 grams and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 weighs just 595 grams. It is no surprise to see the 8.9-inch model come in at a lower weight, however we were slightly surprised to see the 10.1 inch model 6 grams lighter than the iPad 2 (which weights 601 grams).

To me it is no big deal to see that Samsung’s tablets are thinner and lighter than Apple’s latest tablets, however seeing as how Apple were heavily promoting how the iPad 2 is thinner, lighter and faster than the their last effort they may be slightly embarrassed to see how Samsung has instantly rained on their parade.

It will be interesting to see if Samsung’s new tablets are faster than the iPad 2, if so 2011 will be an embarrassing year for Apple’s tablet efforts, that is unless we see an iPad 3 in September.

More news will undoubtedly be revealed throughout the rest of the day, when we hear more so will you, are you keeping a close-eye on the new Samsung tablets?

We have just told you about two devices which have just been confirmed for CTIA 2011 for Sprint, but now we have fresh details on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9, the middle sized tablet between the 7-inch and 10.1-inch devices that we already know about.

We knew that this device was heading to CTIA 2011 thanks to some previous teasers from Samsung, but now some images obtained by PocketNow has dished a little bit more dirt on the device. As expected, the device will carry the name Galaxy Tab 8.9 like it’s smaller and bigger brothers, but what you didn’t know, is that the 8.9 will feature a custom version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread which will make it unique to other Honeycomb tablets that you currently see on the market, ie. the Motorola Xoom.

The 8.9 will introduce a live panel feature, which will allow users to customize their homescreen with live updating widgets such as email, weather, news and the latest stock exchange information. Samsung will also be showing off the multitasking features of the 8.9, by showing how their Mini Apps Tray will work. There are some pictures over at PocketNow which gives you an example of this.

We’re pleased to say that the Galaxy Tab 8.9 will feature a dual-core 1Ghz processor, along with a 1200×800 display resolution. It will be a thin device at 8.6mm and one which is pretty light too at just 470g.

Are you interested in this medium sized device? We haven’t heard any details about the larger 10.1 device for a while, we wonder what’s happened to that. Does the 8.9 appeal to you more, or are you waiting for the 10.1?

We’ve only just told you about the impressive looking, upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 device, but now we have confirmation that Samsung will be planning to bring another slightly smaller version of the Galaxy Tab to market very soon.

Samsung has been sending out invites to their Mobile Unpacked event at CTIA 2011 which will start on March 22nd over in Florida USA. Take a look at the accompanied picture they sent out with the invites, as reported by Engadget.

As you can see, the numbers 78910 are featured, which is obviously a hidden confirmation that the company are planning to release an 8.9-inch version of their Galaxy Tab to join the original 7-inch model and the upcoming 10.1-inch premium version.

The question here is though, do we really need another Galaxy Tab to think about? We feel that the 10.1-inch version is more than enough, and the inclusion of another 8.9-inch device may only serve as a confusion for consumers. Samsung on the other hand, obviously feel that the time is right to capitalize on the success of their original Galaxy Tab by offering one more version for consumers.

What are your thoughts on this? Would you be interested in this 8.9 Galaxy Tab or do you think they are over-doing it? We’ll let you know once we hear of any hardware changes for this model.
