There has been much coverage on the net and in the press about the ongoing legal battle between Apple and Samsung over alleged copying of certain iOS products. The case has been going on for months now, but today we have news that Samsung copies Apple as a Galaxy S II Skyrocket catches fire.

Last week there were reports that an iPhone burst into flames, and now Electronista is reporting in an article that a similar incident has happened on one of Samsung’s handsets. An owner of a Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket had his device on standby in his trouser pocket. He begun to feel a hot painful sensation and he quickly removed the handset that was now smoking.

This follows the nasty experience a passenger had on an Australian airliner with an iPhone 4S. Luckily the plane had just landed when the owner of the device noticed there was smoke appearing from his pocket. The handset was again quickly removed and the back of the device was glowing because of internal heat.

The problem with the iPhone has been put down to a rare but well known problem that can sometimes occur with lithium-ion batteries. They can sometimes overheat, which occasionally cause them to catch fire. This may also be the cause of the problem that the owner had with his Galaxy S II Skyrocket.

This sort of problem is normally started off after a significant impact to the battery, but both of these issues seem to have been caused by normal use. The fact that both handsets had just been exposed to high altitudes just before they overheated may have something to do with problems.

Have you ever had a smartphone battery overheat?

Earlier on we told you about AT&T’s rather huge announcement that their two new LTE phones are now ready for release. One of these phones is the very impressive looking Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket and we believe that it’s going be a great alternative to the Galaxy Nexus.

Many consumers had previously thought that the Galaxy Nexus was going to be the best Android handset hands down prior to its announcement, but after Google outed it in Hong Kong, it has perhaps been downgraded slightly in some consumers eyes. This could be due to the fact that it doesn’t have a MicroSD slot, only comes with a 5MP camera and just a 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, the standard for all new Android smartphones.

On the positive side, it will be Google’s first Ice Cream Sandwich phone of course, and considering it is a developer phone – it is certain to be the first handset to receive future software updates in front of any other Android handsets – a very strong selling point indeed.

But now AT&T’s LTE competitor makes things very interesting for sure – most notably since it comes with a blistering 1.5Ghz dual-core processor, the same processor that many thought would be included on the Galaxy Nexus. It also comes with an 8 megapixel camera and NFC support like the Galaxy Nexus, meaning features like Android Beam and Face Unlock will surely come to the Galaxy S II Skyrocket once it gets an inevitable update to Ice Cream Sandwich – it ships with Android 2.3.5.

We previously said that Verizon were the dominant force at the moment since they also have the equally as impressive Droid RAZR on their books, but now AT&T’s Skyrocket changes everything – which is great for AT&T consumers as choice is always a good thing. No longer will AT&T customers have to contemplate switching carriers to Verizon, as the Skyrocket looks as good as, if not even better than the Galaxy Nexus – there we said it.

It may come down to whether you want ICS straight away or don’t mind waiting for the update for the Skyrocket. Having a 1.5Ghz dual-core processor on paper though may just tempt consumers to choose the Skyrocket over the Galaxy Nexus.

Are you impressed too with the Skyrocket? Will you now reconsider which smartphone to pick up next between the Skyrocket, Galaxy Nexus and Droid RAZR? Give us your thoughts on this.

LTE technology is being pushed out to many regions around the world, and in the US both AT&T and Verizon is looking to expand their 4G networks. Today the first AT&T LTE smartphones say hello to consumers, and are coming as early as next week.

The US carrier has just unveiled the HTC Vivid and the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket, which is a 4G version of the standard Galaxy S II. According to SlashGear the Skyrocket will be landing in stores from November 6th and will have a 1.5GHz dual-core processor running Android Gingerbread 2.3.5.

The main camera will be an 8-megapixel unit capable of 1080p video capture, with a 2-megapixel camera on the front. It has 16GB of on-board storage that can be expanded by an addition 32GB via the microSD slot. The display will be the same WVGA offering found on the original Galaxy, instead of the Super AMOLED HD screen found on the Galaxy Nexus.

Meanwhile the HTC Vivid has a 4.5-inch qHD screen with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and an 8-meagpixel wide angle camera. This will also offer 1080p video recording and have 16GB of on-board storage. AT&T switched on its 4G network back in September, and on the same day as the handsets become available the service will be switched on in Athens, Boston, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.

Price wise the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket will set you back $249.99 on a two year contract, while the HTC Vivid is slightly cheaper at $199.99. You will also need a 4G data plan to go with it that start from $15 per month. For this you get 200MB or for $25 per month you can have 2GB of data, and if you want to use your device as a mobile hotspot you can sign up for DataPro 4GB at $45 per month.
