There are those of us who would love to get hold of the Dead Sea Scrolls and try to decipher what the historically text says. However, they are too fragile and would be destroyed if handled too many time. Google as always has the answer, and that is to make the scrolls available to the one billion Internet users.

Digitizing books is nothing new to Google; so offering these digital images online seemed like the right thing to do. Who would have thought that the one Bedouin shepherd would have made one of the best discoveries in our lifetime?

Back then the Internet was not in existence, so at that time the thought of making the Dead Sea Scrolls available to a few hundred people was a daunting task – how times have changed. The scrolls are currently kept under controlled conditions, and are only seen by a handful of people.

It is no secret that many more people around the world would love to get their hands on the scrolls, but at least Google is giving us the next best thing. For more details on this visit The Independent.

What else would you like Google to make available online?
