Today is supposed to be a momentous occasion for smartphone lovers across the world, as it could be the day when Apple unveils a brand new iPhone model to the world once again at WWDC 2011. However, one particular news story is threatening to cast a shadow over today’s activities.

That story comes from the WHO, aka the World Health Organisation who recently published some new research stating that there is now a 40 percent greater risk of catching brain cancer due to heavy cell phone use.

Naturally, this has caused a considerable amount of distress for some consumers, while others have decided to take the findings with a pinch of salt and carry on with their daily cell phone use as normal – who wouldn’t?

However, there are some critics who are claiming that the fresh news about cell phone risks to cancer is ‘inconclusive’, as detailed in this article over at Cnet. The article contains a link to the original document from the WHO, which includes the following statement from them which we’ve added for you below:

”The WHO/International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B), based on an increased risk for glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer1, associated with wireless phone use.”

It sounds scary, but should we really be that concerned about it? Leading back to the iPhone 5, we’re interested to know, just how many potential iPhone buyers have one eye on developments regarding the new cancer risks. Are any of you actually planning to hold back on a purchase until the news becomes more clearer?

In the past we had disturbing reports that our cell phones were emitting a certain amount of radiation, most of us do not fear this now, but back then it was a huge deal. However, under new law there now has to be cell phone radiation notices for each phone – just in the Bay Area, San Francisco.

With such a huge range of cell phones on the market it is hard to know what phones emit more radiation than others – we have to wonder why there is such a huge variance? The most referred term for this radiation is RF energy, which is also known as Radio Waves – this only occurs during a phone call.

Back when we first learned of this we started to see some strange accessories appear in stores – remember those weird looking shields that was places between the ear and the phone?

According to Ian Ritz from The Epoch Times, when you now go into a cell phone store in the Bay City area you will now see this extra information displayed beside the phone you intend to purchase. This is certainly great for those who have been worried in the past about the RF energy the level that they emit.

Visit EWG’s website, where they offer information on a 1,000 cell phones and that their RF levels are.

It is no secret that power lines, cell phones and microwaves have been linked to radiation, however we have recently heard that the real threats come from overuse of medical scanners.

A recent article posted on msnbc has looked at the risks associated with medical scanners, apparently Americans are at the highest risk from medical radiation as half of the advanced radiation-based medical procedures take place in America.

Too much exposure to radiation is directly linked to cancer, a radiologist called Dr. Steven Birnbaum says that if you have had more than 10 CT scans the risk of cancer is high, he believes that Americans are overtested and overtreated.

Birnbaum believes that CT scan usage has soared lately, he says a lot of the time ultrasound, MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging could be used instead, these methods do not post any radiation risk.

Are you a radiologist? If so, do you agree with Dr. Steven Birnbaum?
