Remember how the name of the upcoming PSP2 was thought to be still up in the air, since many of you don’t believe that it will be called PS Vita? Well, consider the name game over as some evidence from Sony themselves suggest that the name is now set in stone.

It has been discovered on Sony’s E3 website, that the words PS Vita have been located inside some source code, according to Destructoid. They have even included a screenshot of the PS Vita text hidden away inside Sony’s source, which you can check out through their website.

We’ve just take a look ourselves, and it looks to have been deleted by Sony now, unless we were looking in the wrong place. If they have deleted it, then it’s yet another indication that the PS Vita will definitely be involved in Sony’s upcoming E3 announcements on June 6th.

Will it end up being the final retail name for the PSP2, or is it still a codename that developers are using behind closed doors. That’s the question that many of you are asking, but at least we’ll have the answers in just a few days.

In the meantime, turn the PlayStation Store back online Sony, pretty please.

We have some important details to share with those who are considering picking up the Sony NGP, aka the PSP2, as we’re hearing slightly worrying rumors that Sony has decided to downgrade the memory on one of the NGP’s models in order to compete with Nintendo 3DS pricing.

The rumors have surfaced from Industry Gamers, as they state that Sony will downgrade the memory from 512MB to 256MB of RAM on the WiFi only model i.e, not the model with added 3G connectivity support.

Furthermore, the source also states that there will no longer be 16GB of internal memory on the system, but instead the NGP will be utilizing external memory similar to the memory sticks used in the original PSP models.

If the news turns out to be true, then that’s obviously a bit of a bombshell. It does seem a bit farfetched for Sony to downgrade the system by such a margin just in order to be competitive with the Nintendo 3DS, but as you are well aware, Sony are always capable of one or two surprises.

What are your thoughts on this? Would you still consider buying a PSP2 if it came with external memory and 256MB of RAM instead of 512MB and internal memory? Don’t forget that these changes only affect the non-3G model of the NGP apparently. We’ll try and clear this rumor up for you soon.

We have some worrying news to bring you now, as Sony has admitted that the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan has had an affect on their upcoming launch of the Sony NGP or PSP2. They have stated that the device may now be delayed in some regions, but didn’t state which ones.

The NGP was thought to be launching in Japan first, with a release coming to the US and then parts of Europe afterwards. However, that’s now been put in doubt by Sony’s Jack Tretton, who states that Sony now has production problems on their hands as a result of the earthquake, and that they are currently considering their next move, as reported from VG247.

Below is a quote from Tretton from his interview with Bloomberg:

“It may be the straw that says ‘maybe we get to just one market by the end of the year,’”

What are your thoughts on this? The fact that he doesn’t state any specific regions is particularly worrying, and if they are having production problems, the chances of the Sony NGP coming to Europe before the end of the year are looking pretty slim based on what Tretton has said. It will be even worse if the device doesn’t make a US release in 2011 either – but we don’t want to think about that just yet.

Are you surprised that the Japan disaster could potentially delay the PSP2?

Attention all prospective Sony NGP owners, as the following details are definitely worth getting exciting about. We hadn’t previously heard of any sort of release date for the device also known as the PSP2, but now we have a potential date for the European version of the device.

Just to refresh your memory, the device was announced at Sony’s special ‘meeting’ in Japan during January, and since then – gaming fans all over the world have been waiting to get their hands on the NGP, especially since it comes equipped with a quad-core processor amongst other hardware delights.

Back to the story though, and we’re hearing that the device will be released on November 11th, according to this report from MCV. However, they haven’t given any background information on where exactly they obtained this information – preferring to quote ‘various online leaks’ instead.

What is worth mentioning though, is that they say that the NGP could be rolled out on Friday 11th November as a global release, which would be the first time that has happened since the original PSP was first launched in Japan 2004 before seeing a release in US and Europe in 2005.

Our thoughts on this, is that we shouldn’t really read too much into that date, especially since there’s no solid information on where the release date originated. However, we’re willing to bet that Sony are planning to announce the release date for real at E3 2011 in June, and they’ll probably also announce the real, final retail name of the device, since they have already stated that NGP (Next Generation Portable) is just a temporary codename.

What are your thoughts on this November 11th release date – accurate or not in your opinion? We’ll let you know if we get any fresh details on this.

We have some good news for those of you looking forward to picking up the new PlayStation Phone next year, as some new details have emerged courtesy of a Japanese newspaper report.

According to Kotaku, fresh details on the PS Phone have come from the Asahi Shimbun newspaper, as they have stated that the new release ETA for the ‘not-so-secretive’ PlayStation Phone is Spring of 2011.

Sony has yet to respond to the newspaper report, but the details suggest that the device will be released first in the US and Europe, followed by a worldwide release shortly afterwards.

We know the device is definitely coming, and Sony’s Kaz Hirai even hinted of a release which you can read in our previous article here. Aside from being manufactured by Sony Ericsson, the device will also come with the recently released Google Android 3.0 Gingerbread software.

It’s certainly a nice prospect to think that Sony are planning to release both the PlayStation Phone and PSP2 in the same year. It will be interesting to see how both devices differ. We’ve heard rumors about the PSP2 also running Android, which would definitely make sense, and if it can run Xbox 360 and PS3-quality games which has also been speculated, then it could be Sony’s turn to shine next year.

What are your thoughts on the upcoming PlayStation Phone and PSP2?

When discussing the rumored PlayStation Phone with the New York Times, here is what he had to say:

”We don’t want gamers to be asking, what’s the difference between that and a PSP … We have to come up with a message that users will understand.”

The very fact that Hirai is calling the PlayStation Phone ‘that’ obviously means that this thing is a reality, and it’s also a hidden message that Sony Ericsson’s device, rumored to be called Xperia ‘Play’ will be completely different to the touch-pad equipped Sony PSP2.

Speaking of touch-pad, Hirai also had a few words to say on the secret PSP2 project, almost giving us an official confirmation that the device will definitely support a touch-pad on the back – confirming months of previous speculation on the control scheme.

“There are [games] where you can play perfectly well with a touch panel. But you can definitely play immersive games better with physical buttons and pads. I think there could be games where you’re able to use both in combination.”

To draw a line under both products, its there to see that they are definitely on the way next year. Which one are you going to buy? One or the other, or even both?

It looks like the early details on the PlayStation phone were correct, as more infomation is now starting to creep out to the masses. We’ve just heard that the PS phone is codenamed ‘Zeus’, and that it will be based on the PSP1 technology.

We first heard about the Zeus name in a fresh article from Engadget, who has strongly denied claims that the photos were fake. They reiterate that this thing is real and that it will be codenamed Zeus and run on a gaming platform known as the ‘Z-System’.

Furthermore, these details were backed up by this VG247 report, who have also been told about the Zeus name via one of their sources. However, they also revealed that the PlayStation Phone will be based on existing tech, seen in the Playstation Portable, and not something completely built-up from scratch.

You should also be aware that Sony has now gone back to their usual ‘we don’t comment on rumor and speculation’ statement, rather than one of their supposed employees calling it ‘definitely fake’.

All signs are pointing in the direction that this device is definitely on the way guys. We’ll let you know when we hear more on it – give us your thoughts.

You may have heard yesterday that Sony quietly announced a global price cut for their flop PSP Go, but how will a $50 price cut really change things for the company particularly when the PSP 2 is already on the horizon.

If you case you missed it, Sony announced that the PSP Go is now available for $199, down from the original price of $249. The cut is also effective in Europe and Japan with the new price set at £159.99, discounted from £199.99 and ¥16,800 for the Japanese market ($200/£132).

While hardware price cuts are always welcome, we doubt there will be many of you rushing to stores straight away to buy a PSP Go at the new price point, as $199 may still seem too much in some gamer’s eyes.

We are hearing fresh details on the PSP2 by the day now and it is probably worth while to save that $199 until the PSP2 lands next year – around fall time if rumors are to be believed.

The new price cut may appeal to consumers who have never owned a PSP system in the past, but to everyone else who still has a standard PSP, it still isn’t worth it.

Let us know your thoughts on this.

We reported to you earlier today that gaming analyst Michael Pachter, thinks it would be a good idea for Sony to incorporate 3D to any new PSP, like Nintendo will be doing with the upcoming 3DS. Once these devices become available many children will want them, but what are the health risks?

Back in July Sony changed the terms and conditions for the PlayStation, and warned of possible health risks with watching and playing 3D content. The risks included nausea and eye fatigue or strain. It was also advised to take regular breaks in between 3D sessions, and viewing for the under six’s is not suitable.

Samsung have posted warnings over 3D viewing, and which groups of people are at risk. Doctors even backed up the warnings given by the company. These groups included the elderly, teens, people who are intoxicated, and again children under six.

With all these warnings in mind, is it a smart move to bring 3D to handheld gaming, and what are the risks to our children? While we are sure some warnings will come with any 3D portable device, it will be interesting to see how the brands making these devices respond to any health risks.

Will you buy a 3D portable gaming device?

We have heard a number of rumors that Sony is working on a secret project, which is most likely the new PSP2 – yea, not much of a secret ah. Then again, Sony could still surprise us all by giving the new handheld a new feature that will compete with the iPhone 4 – a phone.

Cory Appleton from Examiner learned from Develop that Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida reveled to them that they have been working on a secret project, and that it will come with a host of features all designed to increase the enjoyment factor.

Some of those features include the ability to send SMS, reading books, magazines and also playing video games on a disc, so no download only like the PSP Go. Appleton believes that all these features add to one thing – the Sony phone.

Sony knows that Apple has dominated the smartphone market for sometime now – Microsoft has tried to take the fight to them but has failed, so now it is Sony’s turn. Well, maybe.
