Filed under Gaming, Sony Playstation 3
PS3 Daily are reporting that there is a brand new firmware update called “firmware update 2.43″ which is ready for download, don’t get too excited though if you live outside of Japan.
This new update v2.43 is only for those who live in Japan, it has been specifically designed for Japan and you can now install the new update.
If you live in other regions you will not be asked to download this new update; however you can manually install if you please, just go to “System Update” under the XMB’s Settings icon and start installing. Nothing new will happen for you though because if you already have v2.41 or later you are ok.

80GB Sony PS3 more energy efficient: 65nm RSX chips
August 26, 2008 by Peter
Filed under Gaming, Sony Playstation 3

So we know that the new 80GB version of the Sony PS3 was upgraded with a larger hard drive. We did not know however that it would be more energy efficient than the 40GB version.
It seems that the Core does use less energy than the smaller hard drive version. A user from Slickdeals forum connected his 80GB PlayStation 3 up to a Kill-a-watt and was shocked at his findings.
The 80GB PS3 used 130 watts of power while playing MGS4, whereas the 40GB version used 155.2 watts of power. That’s not all, on idle the 80GB version uses 111.9 watts, whereas the 40GB model used 125.8 watts when idle on the XMB.
There are man theories as to why this is; the most popular is that Sony is now using the 65nm RSX chips. These chips are cheaper as well as being more reliable.
As yet Sony has not responded to these rumors, but that should only be a matter of time when they do.
Sony 80GB PlayStation 3 Friday 22
August 19, 2008 by Peter
Filed under Gaming, Sony Playstation 3

We have known for a while that the 40GB PS3 was being fazed out with the 80GB PlayStation 3. The new model was not meant to be out until September, but larger storage version will be launched a week early so will be available this Friday.
Many stores are already showing that they will have them ready for shipping on Friday 22, those stores include, GAME, Play, Amazon, and many more.
I missed out on the 60GB version and have the 40GB version, but I am not worried about that as larger hard drives are easy to install. Ok I know you are getting 40GB worth of storage for free, but lets face it 80GB is still small.
Sony have done something great here though, the 80GB PS3 will have more storage than the new 60GB Xbox 360. It seems like Sony and Microsoft are playing a constant game of cat and mouse.
One thing is certain, the larger hard drive will only help to increase sales of what has to be the best games console on the market.

Filed under Gaming, Sony Playstation 3, Xbox 360

Over at talkplaystation.com, it has been confirmed that a demo for the next Star Wars game: The Force Unleashed will be released on the 14th of August on the PSN and Xbox Live Marketplace.
This is great news for all you fans out there as it will give you a chance to get to grips with a level from the game just before its retail release in September.
The game will put you in the role as Darth Vader’s ‘secret apprentice’ and you get to explore various aspects of the Star Wars universe from the periods between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.
Peter Hirschmann, Vice-President of Product Development at LucasArts added, “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is one of the most ambitious projects LucasArts has ever launched. The combination of a great new Star Wars story with revolutionary new technology and game play means more fun than you’ve ever had in the Star Wars universe.”
Bring on this week’s store update then, my favourite game from the franchise was Jedi Power Battles way back on the PS1, I’m looking forward to seeing how this one turns out to be. The game will hit retail stores on September 16th in the United States, Sept 17th in Asia and Australia and ‘finally’, Sept 19th in Europe. (We knew that was coming).

Hands on with Fallout 3 plus interview
August 6, 2008 by Mark
Filed under PC Games, Sony Playstation 3, Xbox 360

We have found two great articles from Spong and PS3 Daily, Spong are giving you the full hands on with Fallout 3 and over at PS3 Daily they have some information about the Fallout 3 interview that took place with Greg Howson.
Spong started of their hands-on with Fallout 3 by saying that is was a swish hotel where there were journalists who were given access to play test an early Xbox 360 version of the amazing game Fallout 3 in London. They carry on to say that this game is part RPG and part FPS in implementation, Bethesda’s (of The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion fame) much heralded full 3D version of the PC classic.
We could go on and on about this game ourselves but we do not want to steal Spong’s thunder so please do give them a visit here and read the full hands-on review.
Now over at PS3 Daily they are reporting that Greg Howson from the Guardian recently had a round table interview with Fallout 3 project manager at Bethesda, Pete Hines. The interview proved to be interesting to say the least.
PS3 Daily highlighted the fact that Fallout 3 will not have online options and will only be a single player game, they also say that the Xbox 360 is the main platform for the game, in the interview the answer came back saying Microsoft Xbox 360 is their lead platform, but of course the PS3 and PC platforms will get the game. Read more over at PS3 Daily.

Xbox 360: Gaming or Media Streaming?
August 5, 2008 by Mark
Filed under Gaming, Sony Playstation 3, Xbox 360

We have so many comments and many statements saying that Xbox 360 gamers only bought the 360 gaming console for games only, when everyone compares the Xbox 360 to the Sony PS3 you all say that it is for the games not the media side of things such as the Blu-ray.
Well now the Xbox 360 has media-streaming where you can stream movies direct from Netflix, so now that you have media streaming are you still about the games when compared to the PS3.
The PlayStation 3 has always been about gaming and media, this console has always been about giving you the whole package and not just gaming and of course when comparing Xbox 360 gamers say they bought the console solely for the gaming side of things not the media side of things
In a nutshell what we are asking is, now that you have streaming capabilities do you use the Xbox 360 more for media like movies than before or is it just a games console like it has always been?
Final Fantasy XIII demo coming for PS3 users only
August 2, 2008 by Alan
Filed under Gaming, Sony Playstation 3, Xbox 360

The latest news on Final Fantasy XIII is that there will be a playable demo release in March of 2009, but reports have suggested that this will only be available to PS3 users who purchase the Advent Children: Complete Blu-ray disc.
This is sure to disappoint some Xbox 360 fans out there who recently found out that the game would be coming out on the 360 console also. At the same time, PS3 owners should be feeling a lot better since a lot of fans out there have been venting their frustration at Square-Enix over the previous announcements, personally as a PS3 owner though, I don’t see it as much as an issue since we will still get to play one of the most anticipated games on the PS3, regardless if it’s on the 360 or not.
Who knows if this deal will remain permanent or if Microsoft will try and strike a deal to get the demo on their console also, we will have to wait and see how the story develops further.
So what do you guys think of this latest piece of news in the FF PS3 vs. 360 saga, it would be interesting to know your opinions on this.

Final Fantasy VII-2 PS3 remake: What’s all the fuss?
July 31, 2008 by Peter
Filed under Gaming, Sony Playstation 3, Xbox 360

Over the past few months we have heard all the rumors of the impending Final Fantasy VII announcement from Square-Enix. It seems that the ancient rumor of a remake for the PS3 has now resurfaced.
There has been a huge amount of news covering all the information about the game, but it seems that someone has looked at it from another perspective. PSX Extreme has been looking into all the different opinions as to whether there should be a remake, sequel or spin-off.
It is also rumoured that Final Fantasy VII-2 will be coming to the Xbox 360, so will not just be exclusive to the PS3. It seems for this game to prove popular; it is needed on both consoles.
Square-Enix has said that for the FFVII remake to prove popular, the entire original team needs to get back together. PSX Extreme does not believe that this is needed; they said that it was not needed for the prequel.
Do you think that Final Fantasy VII-2 remake is needed, also what is all the fuss anyway?
Life with PlayStation 3 not in Firmware update 2.42
July 30, 2008 by Peter
Filed under Gaming, Sony Playstation 3

We spoke this morning about the new Sony PlayStation 3 Firmware update 2.42; well many of you would have had the chance to check it out by now.
The first thing you will notice is that the update does not feature Life with PlayStation. Many had hoped that this news and weather information would have been included with the PS3 update 2.42.
It seems that this new firmware was more about fixing known security issues, instead of giving users what they really want.
There is a positive side to us not getting Life with PlayStation just yet; at least we know that they are spending more time solving issues which could arise with an early release.
It seems as if PlayStation 3 firmware update 2.42 is yet another let down. Have you had a chance to download the update yet, if so what do you think?

Prisoner Ban: No violent PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games
July 28, 2008 by Peter
Filed under Gaming, Sony Playstation 3, Xbox 360

There will be a prisoner ban for those who wish to play on their PlayStation 3’s and Xbox 360’s. Prisoners who wish to play on a games console will have to earn top privileges, but then they will still not be able to play violent games with an 18 rating.
This new directive means that taxpayer’s money is no longer being used to purchase games or consoles for inmates.
PS3 Daily reports that the government has admitted to spending over £10,000 on 80 PS3 consoles and 15 Xbox 360’s, for a young offender institutions. The Government said that they had purchased these consoles, as they would stop prisoners getting depressed as they spend so long in their cells.
Correct me if I am wrong, I thought that that was the whole idea of going to prison. The people in prison are there for doing a crime, so why should they get privileges. There are thousands of people who work hard, and they can’t even afford to purchase a PlayStation 3 or an Xbox 360.
This decision has come after a public outage, after pictures were shown of Soham killer Ian Huntley, playing on a PlayStation.
Sony PlayStation 3 Firmware 2.4 XMB update: list of features
June 26, 2008 by Peter
Filed under Gaming, Sony Playstation 3

As you know people were expecting the new Sony PlayStation 3 Firmware update 2.4 some time next week, but it seems that this is not the case. CVG have managed to get their hands on the final details list and as you know, the update is known as the XMB update. So what should we expect from Firmware 2.4, well firstly we have learned that there will be the inclusion of trophies. This means that there will be full 2D trophy support; there will be four types, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
To be awarded platinum you have to first collect all other trophies in a game. In the game there will be no gamer points, it will now be done on a levelling up system, much like the system used on the ever popular Call of Duty 4. Ok so we mentioned early on that people were expecting update 2.4 some time next week, well the bad news is we will have to wait a little longer.
A source has told CVG that the launch of firmware update 2.4 will be in around three week’s time. This seems to coincide with the start of E3; it seems that Sony feel that the pre-E3 conference would be the perfect time to launch the Sony XMB assault.
Many people will be wondering what the XMB features are, well here are just a handful of these features, view, send, receive messages, set the vibration feature of the controller, music category and much more.
Another superb feature that I am most interested about in the new update, is how you can play back your own tunes while in a game; this will be done from the XMB Music column. It is still not sure if this feature will work with all games, but I do hope that it works with Grid: Race Driver, how cool will it be to try and race around the track while playing Queen with One Vision.

Do you love Hot Shots Golf? Well if you do you will be happy to know that there are new characters and that they are available for only a buck yes that is a dollar (well in fact it is only 99 cents. There are two characters one of them is Alex skill level will be intermediate and Gloria is expert, you will be able to purchase these characters on May 15th.
Just so everyone knows because of the DLC a patch will be applied to the game later this week, the patch is needed for all players of Hot Shots Golf even if you opt not to buy any of these new characters. So will you be buying Gloria and Alex?

Everyone will have to download the new patch even if you do not buy the characters as I said above and this is because the game will keep running smoothly, many of you will ask if the content is on the disc and needing a key to unlock it, well as the source below points out all the content on the disc (Physical) CAN BE accessed without purchasing it is as simple as that no rocket science involved here. The “core” or “shell” of the on-disc game has a sort of plug-and-play feature that lets us quickly deliver content (such as characters and new courses) without clogging up your pipes, which also makes it easier for you to purchase the new content from the PlayStation Store (once you decide to) and access it right away.
