Over the past few weeks the whole topic of jailbreaking has become bigger than ever, as more people have been unlocking their devices to unleash the true power of their iPhone, PS3, Android smartphone etc. For those who do have a jailbroken system, then you will be interested to learn that Dreamcast and SNES emulation has now been ported.

There are those of you who will wonder what is so great about this, but old school gamers will know how much of a big deal this is. The Snes9x port is not finished and still needs some work, that’s because Paul Miller from Engadget explains that a few key features are missing.

The story that originally came from both PSX-Scene and drk||Raziel’s blog also points out that the Dreamcast emulator is also in its rough stage and still has a long way to go. Things like this always have to start somewhere, but the early signs show that the Dreamcast and SNES emulator looks promising.

For those who have yet to jailbreak their Sony PlayStation 3, we would like to know if great features like this would persuade you to change your mind?

Following on from the PS3 jailbreak method for Android phones, we can now confirm that the jailbreak has also been performed on the iPod Touch and iPhone. This is getting a bit out of hand, don’t you think?

As reported from RedmondPie, PSFreedom, the open source version of PSGroove has been successfully ported over to the Sony PS3 console, and we have a couple of videos which prove it.

It is worth pointing out that this isnt a PS3 hack on the iPhone 4 or new iPod Touch devices. Instead, this jailbreak method will only work on the 1G iPhone, iPhone 3G and 1st Generation iPod Touch.

In order to perform the jailbreak on your PS3, you’ll need to first have a jailbroken phone, which you can find more details here if you need them.

As always, only perform this if you know what you are doing. We wonder what Sony are making of all of this, particuarly since they have only just released Firmware Update v3.42 for the PS3.

We have some interesting news to bring you now, as the team behind PSJailbreak have stated that a forthcoming update will allow the USB device to play PS2 games on the PS3 console – what is going on Sony?

As translated from German website PS3Inside.de, PSJailbreak is set to receive an update, with the biggest feature being the Backup Manager v1.1. According to the website, the update will ‘enable’ PS2 gaming, despite the fact that Sony seemingly killed off PS2 gaming on the PS3 ages ago (unless you have an original 60GB of course).

I guess the question that really needs to be asked here is, did Sony keep PS2 Backwards Compatibility on the PS3 all along? As it would seem a pretty big job if the hackers have put PS2 gaming on there from scratch – don’t you think? Speculation is mounting that Sony didn’t remove PS2 support from the PS3, but rather disable it, allowing consumers to focus on their lineup of PS3 software.

Just so you know, the update to PSJailbreak is also set to bring a collection of other useful features, including the support to use ‘any’ firmware. Head over to PS3Inside.de for full details on this.

Let us know if you have anything to share on this mystery.

We have some breaking news to deliver to PS3 owners now, as we can confirm that a second PS3 jailbreak method has been released for the Sony PS3. It is called ‘PSGroove’ and is the first open source jailbreak solution for the console.

As reported from VG247, PSGroove has been created by well know developer Mathieulh and a group of other devs. PSGroove is available in downloadable form, then the files downloaded can be transferred over to a USB dev key – which are not too hard to get hold off – and much cheaper as well than the PSJailbreak USB device.

VG247 haven’t put up the download links for obvious reasons, but you can read a full report on PSGroove, over at Exophase here. If developers can come up with some useful and LEGAL third-party homebrew applications, then I don’t see the harm in this.

What are your initial thoughts on this? Do you think this is getting out of hand, or do you support the whole PS3 jailbreaking idea?

As reported from PS3Hax, PS3Key is currently in development, and the creators have already set up a Facebook page, in which they are keeping users updated on the current status of PS3Key.

According to them, PS3Key will be ready in a few weeks time and is thought to be as easy as PSJailbreak – the USB device which enables users to save and install games from the hard drive.

Here is a message posted on their Facebook page: ”Good news everyone! Our mad scientist has confirmed that getting into the console is as simple as pretending to be a USB hub! It doesn’t look like this is going to take any more than a few weeks!”
What are your thoughts on the mysterious PS3Key? We’ll give you an update on this story when we hear more news.

Following on from our report which informed you about Sony’s possible plans to ban anyone using the new PS3 jailbreak solution, we now have some fresh details from community hacker Mathieulh, who says that the USB method may be available via alternative means.

As taken from PS3Hax, Mathieulh has posted a recent message on Twitter, in relation to PSJailbreak – a USB plug and play device which allows a new way to enable homebrew applications and gives users the ability to save games onto the hard drive.

However, Mathieulh thinks that Sony will fix the problem up with a firmware update, rendering the USB device useless for the time being. He states that the guys responsible for PSJailbreak definitely used Geohot’s PS3 jailbreak method on their USB device and reveals that the exact chip used for it, has already been identified.

As a result, he advises PS3 owners NOT to purchase the USB dongle, as a free and alternative method to allow homebrew content will be available in the nearer future. You can see the message on his Twitter account here.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think the PS3 will now go down the same route as the PSP?

If you are a PS3 owner, you are probably aware that the console is now open to homebrew applications and has the ability to play games off a hard drive, due to the recent release of a USB device called PSJailbreak.

While many PS3 owners are naturally delighted with the thought of playing free games, there are obvious risks, as it has just been reported that Sony can detect who is using the new USB drive, and effectively ban users from the Playstation Network.

Sony has yet to issue an official statement on the recent PS3 hacking, probably since they are hard at work on a new firmware update which will combat the problem and prevent the USB device from working.

More details on this can be seen over at PS3Hax. Do you think users should be banned for using this new device or not?
