It now brings the firmware to version 3.56 and just like the previous update, it’s a minor affair related to improving security on the device.

Considering what has gone on with the PS3 lately, you may have thought that Sony would elaborate a bit further with their usual update patch notes, but that isn’t the case for v3.56, as detailed on the PS Blog below:

“This is a minor update that adds a security patch.”

Does this update have something to do with Geohot obtaining the root key for the system and creating a custom firmware for the PS3 ? – probably. But Sony are not going to tell you if it did.

And once again, the update is a mandatory one – meaning that you can’t sign into the PlayStation Network or play online games unless you install it. Hopefully we’ll be able to bring you the dirty insides of the v3.56 once we receive more information.
