PlayTV recordings no longer transferable, says Sony

August 14, 2008 by Alan

In an article over at Eurogamer, Sony has said that PlayTV will no longer allow saved video files to be transferred to PSP, PC or Memory Stick as originally planned.
This is set to be a huge blow to fans hoping to pick one up as it’s just lost one of its main functions.

The PS3 TV recorder will now only be able to stream live or recorded content over to the PSP using the Remote Play feature.

Those responsible for the bad news, Sony Cambridge stated: “there was no copy protection or time restrictions on the standard format recordings, which could be moved freely onto all manner of storage devices”

With the device still set to launch in the UK on 19th September for £69.99, I can pretty much say that Sony would have lost out on quite a number of potential buyers, as I can personally say I was looking forward to recording clips and transferring them to any device to watch at any time, doesn’t look possible now, So its a big disappointment from Sony. What do you guys think of this? Post your comments below.

New 80GB Sony PS3: limited USB connectivity

New 80GB Sony PS3 limited
On our recent post about the new PlayTV, one of Product Reviews readers asked if the new announced 80gb Sony PS3 will have rear USB slots as the current 40gb model doesn’t have any at the rear.

They did not want the PlayTV sticking out at the front of the Playstation 3, after a little research we cannot confirm if they will be back or front, but it does not look good from what we read on Stuff.

The 80GB will come with the same feature set as the pared down model. So limited USB connectivity and no backwards compatibility with PS2 games.

If that’s true then we could expect nearly everything to be the same, including the USB ports. This will affect buyer’s decisions when looking at the PlayTV.

The new 80GB PS3 will be coming to the UK on August 27th and it’s a good deal at £299, the same price as the 40GB model. Looks like things will pretty much be the same, apart from the extra 40GB.

Would you prefer improved USB connections and a better position on the PS3?

Closer Look at PlayTV for Playstation 3

PlayTV for Playstation 3
Yesterday we announced the release date of PlayTV in the UK to be September 10 and the rest of Europe will be getting this new Playstation 3 hardware between September and December.

Today we take a closer look at Sony PS3’s new dual digital tuner, we take a brief look at what it can and cannot do, some more photos and we welcome your feedback about PlayTV.

The new PlayTV is not wireless and you will have to connect to one of the USB sockets in the Playstation 3, as far as PC or Mac support we’ll have to wait and see.

Its not coming to North America as their digital terrestrial is different to the UK and Europe. (The Americans use ATSC Standards. Europeans and British people use Digital Video Broadcasting DVB standard)

TV shows / content recorded from the Freeview is not protected and you can move it where you want as long as it is in a suitable format, that includes the media server function.

To receive TV through Play TV you will need a good TV aerial, the one you normally use for analog TV will do or an existing aerial if you’ve already got Freeview. Just connect the standard TV aerial cable into the Play TV aerial socket and tune it and it should work.

The price should be EUR 99 (£79.99), although you should not bank on that, as it’s not official yet and we may have to wait until PlayTV hits the shops.

Thanks to PR readers for information they sent in and if you want to share, then just leave a comment. You can read all news on Product Reviews for PlayTV Here.

What’s even more strange is the fact that Amazon still have an incorrect release date of 31 Oct 2008 on their website.

No release date or price for Sony PS3’s PlayTV

Just when us PlayStation 3 owners were about to look forward to the PVR functionality on our games consoles, we have just learnt that we will have to wait a while longer for this TV feature. The much anticipated PlayTV twin-tuner device that will connect to the Sony PS3 was first announced last year in Germany, and many thought that we would get our hands on the device on July 31st as it was showing up as a pre-order over at Amazon.co.uk. However; this has now been removed and there is no news as to when the release will be.

A Sony spokesperson had this to say “We have yet to announce a release date and price for PlayTV, and do not comment on rumor or speculation.”

It seems that no matter where you look no one is giving the PlayTV a firm release date, it seems that these release date keep coming and going and nobody will give an answer as to why this is.

Oh well we will just have to wait for the new device that will turn your Sony PlayStation 3 into a DVR, this will allow your games console to record two programs simultaneously direct on to the hard drive. Once you have recording the programs you are then able to transfer them over to your Sony PSP.
