You may remember an article we wrote a few weeks back, which informed you about a potential $400 price point for the PlayStation Phone. However, one UK retailer has slapped what can only be described as a ridiculous price for the smartphone gaming combi.

The retailer which has been named and shamed is Play UK, which is actually one of my favorite retailers for picking up games and other goodies online since their fast delivery service is excellent.

Back to the real story though, and they have listed a price for the Xperia Play, as much as £519.99, as reported from MTV Multiplayer. Just to let you know for everyone in the US, that converts to around $840 which is pretty crazy as nobody in their right frame of mind is going to pay that amount for the device.

The good news, is that this price is probably, most definitely exaggerated. We expect this to drop considerably by the time Sony announces official prices for the device. Don’t forget that the NGP is also coming out this year, and we expect that to be priced at around $400, so there’s no chance that anyone is going to pay $800+ for the Xperia Play – a device which is considered inferior compared to the quad-core equipped NGP.

What are your thoughts on this price? Could it be an error by the retailer, or do you actually think that Sony would offer the device at this price without contract? We’ll update you when we hear more on this.

We have a treat for our readers in the UK now, as the mobile carrier O2 has just announced that they will have an exclusive on a super sexy White version of the upcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia Play smartphone, aka the PlayStation phone.

As reported from Engadget, it’s a major coup for O2, since all of the other carriers in the UK will be stocking the Xperia Play, and securing the exclusive White model puts them way in front in our opinion.

Take a look at the images of the White model below, which were released by O2 recently. They look pretty sleek you have to agree:

The picture above shows what the white device looks like from the back, while another picture we have below gives you an idea what the Xperia Play looks like when it is placed inside the official dock, which is also available in white by the way:

What are your thoughts on this model? We’re guessing that those of you in the US are eagerly awaiting news to see if the white model will be coming to you as well, but at the moment it’s UK only. It will be interesting to see just how many of you would be willing to import one or obtain one via Ebay if it turns out that it will only be available in UK.

Our prediction though, is that Verizon or some other carrier in the US will offer the white version, just like O2 has it in the UK. If you live in the UK, expect this white version to be available around April, as that’s when the device will first become available.

We have some good news for those of you planning to pick up the now-official Sony Ericsson Xperia Play aka the PlayStation Phone, as we have inadvertently heard about a potential price for the smartphone gaming combi and it’s not too bad at all.

According to this report from GamingBolt. The PlayStation Phone may well come to market in the US priced at $400. The information has surfaced from a competition that Sony themselves are running, in which they are giving ten lucky users the chance to take home a Xperia Play for free.

Apparently, on the contest page for the competition, Sony has stated that the total worth in Euros for the ten handsets is 4990,00, meaning that each handset would be individually priced at 499 Euros. Further information detailed at Neogaf forums has the PS phone priced at $400 in the US – although obviously, this is not official yet until Sony gives the green light.

What are your thoughts on paying $400 for the device. This would be the non-contract price we presume, meaning that you’re probably looking at around $200 when it comes to Verizon on a two year contract. Looking at this potential price point for the Xperia Play, it does make you wonder how high Sony are willing to go for the NGP doesn’t it. The NGP will naturally be the premium device out of the two, but gamers won’t want to pay more than $400 for it.

Take this pricing information with a pinch of salt until we hear otherwise. Would you be willing to pay $400 for the Xperia Play off-contract, or is it too high for your liking?

As we told you earlier, Sony Ericsson has finally unveiled the PlayStation Phone to the world, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The device will be available next month, and now we have a new gameplay video for you to watch, showing off two of the launch titles on offer.

If you were presuming that the Xperia Play would offer a healthy collection of PS1 titles on the go, you would be right in guessing that, but you may not realise that one will come pre-loaded on the device.

Sony didn’t actually announce this pre-loaded title at MWC 2011, but we can confirm that you’ll get the classic Crash Bandicoot PS1 title ready to play as soon as you boot up the device.

Furthermore, football fans will also be pleased to hear that a version of FIFA will also be making an appearance on the Xperia Play. A hands-on video provided by Engadget below gives you a quick glimpse of what both games look like. We have to admit that we’re not too impressed by FIFA. Perhaps the low-quality video is to blame, but the graphics don’t do much to blow you away do they?

Crash Bandicoot on the other hand looks just like we’d expect it to, with the added bonus of running in smooth 60FPS graphics. Check out the video below and let us know your thoughts on both titles. Are you a bit disappointed with the FIFA quality too?

We have some good news for those of you in the UK who are interested in picking up the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, more commonly known as the PlayStation Phone. We now have a list of two confirmed networks which will be offering the device in the UK.

At the moment, we don’t know who will take on the PlayStation Phone in the US, but over in the UK, we can confirm that O2 and Vodafone will both be offering the device so far, according to Phandroid.

That means that the device won’t be exclusive to any one carrier, so those of you hoping for an upgrade on T-Mobile UK or Orange will have to wait and see if the handset comes to those networks as well.

If you watched the Superbowl over the weekend, you’ll know that Sony launched the first ever promo for the device, and they also confirmed that the phone will definitely make an appearance at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona which is fast approaching. Some of you may still be undecided over whether to pick up this device, or the upcoming Sony NGP aka the PSP2, but we have some PS1 emulator videos for you to watch here, which may help you decide.

Are you getting the PS Phone or not?

We have some exciting news for those of you who have been keeping a close eye on developments for the Sony PlayStation Phone, as we have full preview of the device for you to read, as well as a great hands-on video.

Engadget has somehow managed to get their hands on the PlayStation Phone, and have done the world a favor by posting a full report on the device complete with pictures and videos, seemingly a good while before Sony announce it officially at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

We’re going to focus on one particular aspect of their preview – a video which finally shows some gameplay action. Engadget didn’t go into specifics, but they were freely able to ‘download’ some emulators for the device – one was a Gameboy Advance, and the other a PlayStation one. We’re not sure that it’s entirely legal, but we bet you’re dying to see the results anyway.

The games shown were Ridge Racer and Tony Hawks Pro Skater 4. We would have loved to see these played using the full length of the 4-inch multitouch 854 x 480 LCD, but it was still very satisfying to see these running without any apparent framerate problems or slowdowns. Super Mario Advance 4 was also tested and worked like a dream.

It’s clear that you can use the PlayStation Phone to download emulators and roms which will be enough for most, but we still don’t know what Sony’s actual plans are from a gaming point of view. Will they offer a direct service to download PS1 games from the PSN store, or do they have something completely different in the works?

Either way, we can’t wait to see what the final product looks like. Check out Engadget’s video below and read their full preview in the link above. Let us know your thoughts on the device after seeing this video – impressed?

With rumors that the PlayStation Phone will be released in the spring 2011, there are a number of questions that need to be answered. However, the one that has been burning in my mind is which carrier will get Sony Ericsson’s newest handset in the U.S?

We already know that the PS Phone is a GSM handset, but that has not stopped rumors that Verizon will get it as well. The issue here is that the phone maker will need to make a CDMA version as well, which is certainly a possibility. However, what about T-Mobile and Sprint, surely it is in Sony Ericsson’s best interest to make this almost like a Samsung Galaxy S, and make it available to all the major North American wireless phone carriers?

There is no doubt that the PlayStation Phone will be after some iPhone market share, so it is imperative that it is launched on more than one carrier – especially as Apple’s smartphone will be launched on Big Red next month. If not, then the PS Phone might just fade into the background.

We are not certain why the handset was not seen at CES 2011, but maybe Sony Ericsson is waiting for MWC next month? For those who have not seen the handset yet, then visit our recent post where we have a video of it in action for you. We also have another video for you here offering you a game demo being played on the PlayStation Phone.

Which carrier do you think will get the PlayStation Phone?

A few days ago we posted an article showing you a brief hands-on video with the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play aka the PlayStation Phone, now we have another more detailed video for you to watch.

The video has been embedded at the end of this post, it clearly shows one lucky person playing Resident Evil 2 and Rage Racer on the device, I think you will agree that the slide-out controls look great and the graphics, frame-rates and load-times will undoubtedly combine the best of both worlds for a smartphone / handheld console hybrid.

When you slide-out the controls the Xperia Play looks very similar to the PSP Go, that said the Play features two touch sensitive analog pads and a touch screen display for when it is being used as a smartphone.

In the video it clearly shows that the software side of things is not yet finalized, you see a PlayStation emulator loading a ROM file, I would imagine that the finalized interface will be a lot more user-friendly.

The PlayStation Phone has still not been officially announced, therefore it could well be that the device seen in the video is just a concept which will never be released, I doubt this very much, however I do find it strange that no official announcement was made at CES 2011.

Engadget and Next-Gen both so that all of this leaked information pretty much guarantees that the PlayStation Phone is a done deal, therefore don’t be too surprised if it officially revealed by Sony at the Mobile World Congress 2011 (February 14th – 17th).

Will you be buying the Xperia Play?

Don’t worry if you are feeling a little disappointed over the PlayStation Phone ‘no-show’ at CES 2011 so far, as the device has appeared in China, and we have a collection of new videos to show you, showing the device in it’s clearest reveal yet.

As reported from Engadget, the videos have surfaced from Chinese website IT168 and for the first time, they give us a taste of an actual 3D game running on the device. We do know that the game element of the device will be based on PSP1 tech, which should mean that the PS phone will definitely include some sort of PS1 emulator – this game looks to be Asphalt 5 doesn’t it?

The videos also confirm that the PlayStation Application on the device will be known as the ‘PlayStation Pocket’ and we get a good look at how the PlayStation Phone (Zeus Z1) compares alongside the Sony PSP Go, which probably hasn’t done as well as Sony had hoped for.

We’ll be bringing you a full list of specs for the PS Phone so far, later on. In the meantime, check out a video below and let us know your thoughts on them – the rest are over at Engadget. Are you still thinking of buying one of these, or are you going to wait for the PSP2 to be announced?

We have some good news for those of you looking forward to picking up the new PlayStation Phone next year, as some new details have emerged courtesy of a Japanese newspaper report.

According to Kotaku, fresh details on the PS Phone have come from the Asahi Shimbun newspaper, as they have stated that the new release ETA for the ‘not-so-secretive’ PlayStation Phone is Spring of 2011.

Sony has yet to respond to the newspaper report, but the details suggest that the device will be released first in the US and Europe, followed by a worldwide release shortly afterwards.

We know the device is definitely coming, and Sony’s Kaz Hirai even hinted of a release which you can read in our previous article here. Aside from being manufactured by Sony Ericsson, the device will also come with the recently released Google Android 3.0 Gingerbread software.

It’s certainly a nice prospect to think that Sony are planning to release both the PlayStation Phone and PSP2 in the same year. It will be interesting to see how both devices differ. We’ve heard rumors about the PSP2 also running Android, which would definitely make sense, and if it can run Xbox 360 and PS3-quality games which has also been speculated, then it could be Sony’s turn to shine next year.

What are your thoughts on the upcoming PlayStation Phone and PSP2?
