If you are an outdoorsy, adventuring type who’s looking to buy a digital camera that will withstand almost everything, then I think we have news that could well be of interest to you. Pentax has just unveiled its new Optio WG-1 GPS camera that is not only shockproof up to 1.5 meters and waterproof up to 10 meters, but is also crushproof to 100kg and coldproof to 10 degrees Centigrade.

According to Hunter Skipworth over on pocket-lint.com, the Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS camera – which comes with an aluminum alloy front panel with gunmetal grey rubber – will be available in the UK sometime at the beginning of August for £299, and will be available in shiny orange, green and grey. It also comes with a geotagging function, which will record your location so you can show exactly where your pictures were taken.

With a 14-megapixel image sensor and a 5x wide-angle optical zoom, the Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS camera is sure to deliver sharp and true-to-life photographs even when they are enlarged to poster size. Another great feature of the Optio WG-1 GPS is the digital microscope mode, which as noted over on the pentax.co.uk website will deliver sharp, magnified images of the microscopic world.

The Optio WG-1 GPS also boasts an extra-wide 16:9 2.7-inch LCD monitor, which has been treated with a special anti-reflection coating to make it easier to view, face detection that instantly and accurately detects up to 32 faces, a self-portrait assist function that uses LED lights to confirm when your face is centered in the image, and HD video recording that can be easily displayed on your HDTV via the micro-HDMI terminal.

Other features include triple anti-shake protection (Movie SR, Pixel Track SR and a High-Sensitivity anti-shake mode), a carabiner strap for hooking the camera to a backpack etc, an auto picture mode that will automatically select one of 16 different shooting modes or an optimum result, a digital wide function and compatibility with Eye-Fi wireless LAN SD memory cards.

The guys over at stuffmideast.com got a chance to spend a bit of hands-on time with the Pentax Optio WG-1 (the model without the geotagging function) camera recently, and have kindly written a review of the product. The review says that although its design does make it look a bit more toy-like than the Panasonic FT3 and the Olympus TG-810 cameras, it does make the Optio WG-1 lighter.

You can read more of their review over at stuffmideast.com. What do you think of the Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS camera?

After the recent announcement of the Pentax Q, Pentax Imaging Company now have added four accessory Q-mount lenses designed for exclusive use with the Pentax Q. Each lens has an optimized image circle to match the size of the Q’s CMOS image sensor giving users great lens options.

In an article today by Jamie Pert on our PR team; information is given about Pentax Q the world’s smallest, lightest interchangeable lens system camera and a video to view it in action. The Standard Zoom has a focal length equivalent to a 27.5-83.0mm zoom lens in the 35mm format that is great for wide angle to medium telephoto range. Containing a minimum focusing distance of 11.8 inches at all focal lengths for close-up photography this lens produces high quality images that deliver high contrast to the edges. This comes with a built-in neutral density filter for shooting at bright locations or when using slower shutter speeds. This lens price is $299.95.

The Fish-Eye lens is an extra wide angled lens that gives you the option of a wider 160 degree angle of view assisting photographers to obtain that fish-eye effect. The fish-eye lens with it’s ultra wide-angle feature will help the user to produce amazing and captivating images. The lens price is currently $129.95 and will give a great distorted perspective with a pan focus effect that will contain all elements of the picture with a sharp image.

With the Toy Lens Wide and Pentax Toy Lens Telephoto, you will have specially designed optics to retain the different lens aberrations; this produces a more nostalgic image much like the photos taken using a toy camera. Toy Lens Wide is a unifocal wide-angle field of view with a focal length equivalent to 35mm in the 35mm format. The Toy Lens Telephoto is a unifocal medium telephoto lens with a focal length equivalent to 100mm in the 35mm format. Toy Lens Wide and Toy Lens Telephoto are priced at $79.95 each.

Do you think these are reasonable prices? Get more out of your images with a great camera and focus on the lens. For more details, visit Pentaximaging.com.

Recently lots of digital cameras are claiming to be the smallest and lightest offerings with interchangeable lenses, a few days ago we told you that the Panasonic Lumix GF3 was the holder of this accolade, however we then heard that the Sony NEX-C3 was a close contender, well you can now forget about both of these as the Pentaq Q has overtaken them both.

According to PCWorld the Lumix GF3 measures in at 1.28 x 4.24 x 2.64 inches, whilst the Sony Alpha NEX-C3 measures in at 1.31 x 4.38 x 2.38 inches, as you can see both are small, however when we tell you that the Pentax Q is lighter (just 7.1 ounces) and measures in at just 1.2 x 3.9 x 2.3 inches its clear that the Q is significantly smaller.

So what has Pentax fitted into this tiny housing? Well you can read the official press release over at Engadget, we do not have a full beak down of tech specs but we can confirm that you get a 12.4 megapixel backlit CMOS sensor, support for SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards, 1080p HD video capture at 30fps, a 3-inch rear LCD and there is also a pretty unique pop-up flash, it is worth noting that still operates when it has not been “popped-up”. Pentax are keen to talk about the camera’s CMOS sensor which has been manufactured by Sony, apparently the lenses have been designed specifically to suit this 1/2.3-inch image sensor and the sensor itself allows for high sensitivity levels, whilst still managing to combat noise.

In terms of pricing and availability it will cost around $800 when it becomes available in the U.S. this fall, there will be white and black models to choose from (see below).

Recently Engadget got their hands on this impressive piece of kit, if you scroll down to the bottom of this post you can watch their hands on video which reveals that the standard lens will be a 47mm offering, however there will also be zoom, fisheye and telephoto lenses available. Pentax’s representative also claims that the Q has the functionality and controls of a DSLR and a whole repertoire of capture modes, one neat feature is the dial on the front of the camera which will allow you to pre-program multiple custom modes for quick access.

As you would expect the build quality looks solid and the interchangeable lens mechanism looks great, Pentax say that the Q has a magnesium alloy body and is not only durable but it is also scratch resistant to.

What do you think of its $800 price tag?

Pentax are responsible for a number of smart digital cameras. The latest in their long line of products looks as though it’s aimed at trying to please all. The Optio RS1500 is highly customizable and various removable parts which can be switched to suit the user.

Pentax are claiming that their second generation Optio is ‘infinitely customizable’ with its removable faceplate system and interchangeable lens ring snaps. It comes with a choice of black snap rings which can be easily changed without the use of tools.

As the article by Shane McGlaun at Slashgear explains the camera has ten different skins to choose from and cosmetics can be customized in three steps. Personalized skins can also be used using the Pentax software that can take your design or even a photo that has been taken with the Optio, which can be printed off using users’ color printers.

The RS1500 is no bigger than a credit card and comes in silver, white or pearl as standard. It has a lens telephoto range that covers 27.5mm to 110mm, 4x optical zoom, a 14 megapixel image sensor and a rear 3” LCD display. You can order online where the camera will cost $149.95. Shipping starts next month.

What do you think of the Optio RS1500? Will you be getting one? Let us know in the comments below.

Pentax have released details on its two new cameras, the all-weather Optio W90 and superzoom X90. The former is a rugged camera, so we are never going to mistake it for one of the more elegant sleek models. This 12.1-megapixel camera can certainly take some pain, such as shocks and a fall of up to four feet.

For those who take holidays where there is likely to be dust, then the dustproofing feature is certainly going to appeal to you. The W90 offers 720p video recording at 30fps and a maximum 5x optical zoom. The W90 is expected to be released in April and will cost about $330.

The Pentax X90 is a special camera, as it is just one of a few cameras that boast 26x optical zoom. That amount of zoom requires technology to keep things still while taking a shot; the sensor-shift stabilizer is Pentax’s answer to that problem. The X90 should be released next month and have a price tag of $400. Both cameras are not short of problems though; the Pentax K2000 DSLR also fell short in a number of areas.
