Yesterday we revealed the HP Slate 500 price and target market, now we thought that we would see what consumers thought about the choice of operating system.

The HP Slate 500 runs Windows 7 Professional, whilst this is great for people who are used to Windows it isn’t really what experts regard as a mobile operating system, some people say that it would have been much better of running Palm webOS.

In July HP acquired Palm, some people believed that webOS was the main attraction and could perhaps be used on a future iPad competitor, however the release of the HP Slate 500 suggests that this may not be HP’s long-term plan.

It could well be that HP think that Windows 7 Professional is better for an enterprise tablet, whilst webOS is more suited to the consumer market, perhaps we will see a HP tablet release running webOS in the near future.

A webOS-based tablet in my opinion would be more intuitive and have lower hardware requirements than a Windows 7-based tablet, great performance from lower spec hardware also means that battery life would be great, do you think a webOS-based tablet would be a far better overall product?

During CES 2010 HP announced that they would work with Microsoft on a tablet device, and that it would run on Windows 7. However, since Hewlett Packard purchased Palm, the plans were reported to have been scrapped. Since then we have had a lot of conflicting reports over the HP tablet, but we can now tell you that the device is back on, and that there is to be a choice of webOS and Windows.

Until now Apple has had the tablet market all it themselves, this news will not be good for the iPad, as the HP Slate or whatever it will be called looks set to offer more performance, as well as Flash Player support.

According to Ed Oswald from Technologizer, he wrote on PC World that the webOS version could be called the PalmPad and will be ready for release in early 2011. We do not have any spec details, but at least we know that the device exists now.

Oswald points to the fact that the delay has been good for the Apple iPad, and I am surprised that the Cupertino company has had the market all to itself for eight months so far in 2010. We had assumed that other tablet devices would have hit the market by now, we said earlier this year that 2010 would be the year of the tablet device. This was correct, but only if your name was Apple.

We reported last week that Palm and Sprint were updating the Pre and Pixi handsets to webOS 1.4. The latest software update brings with it a number of improvements, and helps to make the phones much better than they were before. Only time will tell just how good.

Black Web 2.0 reports that the install takes around ten minutes from download to install, which seems like an age when waiting to test it out. There are a number of feature updates, with capture, edit, and share video taking center stage. The latest bunch of video editing tools is a welcome edition, making it much easier to shoot and edit videos that you have recorded.

The Pre is the only handset to benefit from Flash 10; those with the Pixi will have to wait until the next update. Other features that have been updated include Calendar, Email, Messaging and much more. You will also notice that battery performance has been improved; just with Apple could do the same with the iPhone.

For the full features of webOS 1.4 visit Palm.
