Yesterday Nokia began its fight back in the smartphone market with the announcement of the Lumia 710 and 800 devices. Nokia is pinning its hopes on the new Windows Phone devices as it tries to regain some of the market share it lost to the likes of the iPhone and Android. Now if you live in the UK and are interested in the Nokia Lumia 800, if you upgrade to the device with Orange will get you a free Xbox 360.

According to an article on The Inquirer the UK carrier is offering customers the free console with the new Nokia smartphone. On the Orange web site there is a page where you can register for the device, and get the Xbox free when you upgrade to the Lumia 800. Users have to enter their mobile phone number to begin the registration

The offer opens on November 16th and runs until the 30th, and is open to customers who are on a 12, 18, or 24 month contract and eligible for an upgrade. You are then required to pay a £10 deposit, and once you have registered the carrier will hold an Xbox 360 for you until November 30th.

Users will also have to upgrade at the same store where they paid their deposit. If you are an Orange customer and are thinking of getting a new handset this could be quite a tempting deal, even if you don’t want an Xbox 360 you could always sell it or give it as a gift to someone.

Do you like the look of the Nokia Lumia 800?

Ofcom recently brought into force new rules regarding the price of calling mobile phones from a landline in the UK. This Ofcom ruling now leads to higher charges for some UK PAYG customers, as certain UK carriers look to claw back some of the lost revenue.

Orange will be putting their prices up from this coming Friday according to an article by David Meyer on ZDNet. Calls will now cost 25p per-minute up from 20p, and texts are also going up from 10p to 12p. Vodafone are also upping costs for PAYG customers beginning from July 14, with calls rising from 21p per-minute to 25p, and texts going up to 12p.

Other operators such as O2, T-Mobile, and Three have said they have no plans to increase their prices, but the increases by Orange and Vodafone only brings their prices in line with their rivals. Vodafone made a point that the Ofcom ruling in cutting mobile termination rates was to blame for the higher prices. These are a charge an operator puts on another carrier for connecting a customer of a rival operator.

This ruling started back in April and landline operators such as BT and TalkTalk quickly offered cheaper calls to mobile phones. Vodafone threatened there will be price rises when it first had talks with Ofcom regarding the cuts.

Ofcom have said that the price rises are overshadowed by the cuts in mobile termination rates, and urged consumers to shop around to find a better deal. T-Mobile offers a service which costs 20p per-minute for calls and texts at 12p, while O2 charges 25p per-minute and 12p per text. Three charges it customers on PAYG 26p per-minute and 11p for texts.

So before the price increases Vodafone and Orange were very competitive with their PAYG pricing, but this will be of little consolation to current customers of the carriers who now face higher call charges. Consumers can use various websites in the UK to try and find a better deal such as USwitch.com and MoneySavingExpert.com.

Are you annoyed with the higher charges by Vodafone and Orange?

There are several ways to charge the battery on our mobile devices and gadgets nowadays, which is handy as almost everyone owns a mobile device of some sort these days. So when simply plugging in an adapter to the nearest electrical point is not an option, there is no need to worry as there are others ways to keep your battery going.

The latest news we have today is of a cool and convenient way to get more juice for your gadgets or mobile devices with a device-charging t-shirt from mobile network Orange. This concept emerged today and will allegedly use the power of sound to charge up your smartphone or any battery powered handset device.

The t-shirt itself would not do much for your style even though we would think you were cool for wearing it as I’m sure a lot of other tech appreciators would. Besides, the use and convenience of the t-shirt serves far more purpose than the design of the clothing, you could always wear something else over the top.

The way it works is by using vibrations from sounds, music and noise close by, which are picked up by the piezoelectric film that it has. The kinetic energy from the vibrations is then converted into electricity, and depending on how much noise is going on around you determines the amount generated.

So if you’re at a music festival or concert the amount of electricity would be far more substantial than if you were just listening to music in your room. According to the article at ExpertReviews there is yet to be a prototype released from Orange and no news as of yet when you will be able to purchase such a device.

If the mobile device charging t-shirt idea is not for you, there are also many other options for you’re stuck. We previously brought you news of the Proporta TurboCharger 5000 which is capable of charging virtually any of your gadgets and can be taken with you wherever you are thanks to its small size.

We also brought you news of the Nokia phone charging bicycle, which like the t-shirt converts kinetic energy into electric energy, so you can charge your mobile whilst riding to work for example. Check out the links above for more details on the various charging devices. Does the t-shirt charger appeal to you? What other devices do you use to charge your gadgets?

In the UK Vodafone managed to get hold of the HTC Sensation earlier than the other carrier’s thanks to an exclusive deal. This deal is now coming to an end with the news that the HTC Sensation is coming to O2 and Orange on July 8.

The Sensation is one of the most desirable handsets currently available, and UK retailer Phones4U have now revealed that sales of the handset will begin on July 8. This will be on contract with Orange and O2, and available free with contracts starting at £30 per month and for two years.

If you would like the handset SIM free you may be able to get hold of it a little earlier a couple of online retailers have it listed. Amazon has it for sale at £479.99 with a shipping date of June 29. Meanwhile Play.com has it up for £489.99 but strangely the shipping date is for June 27th.

If you don’t already know the Sensation is quite a feature packed handset. A 1.2GHz dual-core processor powers the handset with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and has a 4.3-inch qHD Super-LCD display. Will you be getting the HTC Sensation?

Motorola’s Atrix handset has many people looking forward to its release, as the handset has some impressive looking specifications. Today we can tell you the smartphone has just received its UK release date and price.

Chris Martin from the Inquirer is reporting that consumers in the UK on Orange will only have to wait until early May, before they can get their hands on the device. The handset is pretty high-spec so as you can imagine prices are at the top end of the scale.

You will be able to get the new Motorola smartphone free on a two year contract costing £35 per month. For this you not only get a free handset as there is 600 minutes, 750MB of data, unlimited texts, and 50 MMS. If you want to reserve one you can contact Orange telesales or visit one of their retail outlets.

If you are an Orange UK customer who is due an upgrade, or you are thinking of starting a new contract we have some great news for you, Orange has today announced that three new HTC smartphones are coming in Q2 2011.

Orange’s PR manager announced this news on Twitter this morning, here is his tweet: “Good news to HTC fans: Orange UK are getting the Desire S, Wildfire S and the ChaCha in q2 this year”, you can follow him on Twitter here.

These three handsets are the HTC Desire S, the HTC Wildfire S and the HTC ChaCha, we spoke about the Desire S and Wildfire S here, both devices are upgraded versions of last year’s popular HTC smartphones (the Desire and Wildfire), as for the ChaCha this is one of HTC upcoming Facebook-centric handsets, we spoke about these previously here.

According to PCWorld.com the Desire S is very similar to the original Desire, however it has an aluminum unibody shell and runs Gingerbread, as for the Wildfire S it is very similar to the original Wildfire however runs Gingerbread and has a resolution of 320 x 480, also it is a little bit smaller (10.13 cm long and 5.94 cm wide according to 3G.co.uk).

As for the HTC ChaCha you can find out everything you need to know here, it features a physical QWERTY keyboard and a rather unique design, it almost looks like a cross between a BlackBerry and a HTC smartphone, therefore it could well become popular.

All of these handsets will become available in Q2, therefore the earliest we can expect to see them at Orange stores is April 1st, however the Q2 timeframe means it could potentially arrive as late as June 30th.

Which of these smartphones impresses you the most?

I recently received an email from Three UK confirming that they are now offering the Apple iPad, therefore I thought some readers would appreciate seeing how their pricing and data plans compare to Orange’s.

Choosing the right data plan can save you a lot of money and give you a lot of extra data over a 24-month contract, therefore this article is well-worth reading buying for any prospective iPad buyers.

Let’s start with Three’s pricing, you can get the 16GB iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G for £199, the 32GB iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G for £249 and the 64GB iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G for £349, all of these prices require a 24-month contract costing you £25 (monthly) for up to 15GB of usage, if you go over your allowance you will be charge 10p for every MB used.

As for Orange the 16GB iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G costs £199, the 32GB version costs £249 and the 64GB model costs £349, all of these prices require a 24-month contract costing you £27 (monthly), in terms of data you get 1GB of anytime, 1GB quiet time + unlimited BT Openzone, the Openzone access is restricted to a 3GB fair usage policy applies. Orange do not obviously state how much you will be charged for going over your usage allowance.

Below we have embedded an image showing the total cost of the different iPad models from both carriers, also we have included the total amount of data you can use over the two-years without going over your allowance.

As you can see Three are cheaper and give you 3 times as much data allowance, also you have to remember that the 5GB per month you get from Orange takes into account BT Openzone access, therefore in terms of true mobile data you only get 48GB of usage. Note: If you are an existing Orange customer you can save £2 per month, meaning the prices are identical to Three.

If you would like to buy the iPad from Three check out this link, if you would like to buy it from Orange check out this link, if you would like to find out more about the iPad check out this link.

Have you ordered your iPad from Three?

For those of you in the UK who have yet to purchase an Apple iPad, then you should hold off for a little while – only until a new subsidized price has been finalized. There are reports that Orange and T-mobile UK could offer the tablet device for just £200 on contract.

There have been other deals for the iPad, such as giving away free games consoles by carrier rivals, but Orange and T-mobile believes that most people would rather money off the iPad instead of getting a free device that they most-probably have.

The deal is a 16GB Wi-Fi and 3G iPad on an 18 or 24-month contract, which will only cost you £200. However, no details have been given as to the monthly contract fee and data plan, but the offer will be in conjunction with Everything Everywhere, thats according to 9 to 5 Mac.

The closer we come towards the end of 2010 the more Apple is selling their iPad; we had assumed that sales would slow once the Galaxy S was released, but that is not the case. Now there are all these rumors of the iPad 2, confirming that Apple will not allow rivals to hurt their tablet market share.

One of the smartphones which was introduced to the world at the official Windows Phone 7 launch event was the Samsung Omnia 7, this device is coming to the UK carrier Orange and will be HD Voice enabled.

Orange launched their HD voice service at the beginning of September, if you check out our previous article and watch the embedded video you will see just how much of an improvement HD Voice is when compared to standard voice.

At the moment there are only half a dozen or so devices available from Orange which are HD Voice compliant, however it is thought pretty much all high-end smartphones will support this in the future in the future, I’m sure that Microsoft will be happy to hear that their Windows Phone 7 devices offers this functionality.
