Chrome OS 12 beta is now live, and is the final stage of testing before the full release, which is just weeks away. This could happen just before June 15th, which will certainly be a big day for Google, one that has been a long time coming. Having said that, that is if all goes well and no bugs are found.

Those who will purchase the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook will already know what features to expect, and that is a complete new experience. It will take some getting used to, but it will not take long for users to get to grips with it. Can you remember when the Google Chrome browser was first launched, people were reluctant of change – now it is one of the fastest and smoothest browsers on the market.

Chrome OS R12 has some amazing new features, ones that will make the OS a great contender in an already tough market. New features include: file browser, new look, Flash Player, bug fixes, auto update improvements and screen indicators, and so much more. More details on these can be found over at TechCrunch.

One feature that will help Google Chrome OS become a popular choice is Angry Birds, which we recently discussed. It is no secret that people will be apprehensive about changing their OS, but you only have to look how Cloud is making its way into many aspects of our lives.

Will you consider changing to Google Chrome OS?

Ubuntu 11.04 is now available for download, but the jury is still out on what users think of the Natty Unity interface. Here we will look at the pros and cons for the new desktop interface. During its development Unity often disappoints, so it will certainly be interesting to see what Ubuntu Linux did with the final release version?

What we are worried about is MyBroadBand News has pointed out more dislikes than likes with the new software. The unified global menu seems to be a hit, as well as how the shortcut keys are used. This version of Ubuntu Unity seems to rely much more on these shortcut keys, as it makes life much easier.

The only other positive is how you can search for files and folders from the dash; again this has been developed to make things easier. Now on to dislikes, and these are extensive; the launcher seems to be a huge turn off. The reason for this is because of its erratic behavior, not knowing if it wants to open fast or slow.

Three clicks to open an application is also another downside, people do not want to spend ages each time they wish to open file or applications. There are suggestions that Unity has that unfinished feel, which you would not expect from Ubuntu Linux. We just hope that version 11.04 is just a stop gap, and that an update to the interface will not be long down the line?

What are your thoughts on the Ubuntu 11.04 Unity Interface?

The Symbian Foundation – the non-profit organization that stewards the Symbian operating system – made an announcement this past weekend to say that come December 17th, it will be closing down its websites and taking its source code offline.

According to Bill Ray over at theregister.co.uk, even the Foundation’s Twitter feed and Facebook presence is going to become non-existent, as they wind up their operations. Although the source code is going offline, it will be made available by special request.

Wiki content and bug logs will apparently be available on a USB stick or DVD as from the end of January 2011, but as an archive only. Even though the Symbian Foundation is closing, reports say that Symbian Signed will continue to operate.

Nokia has now made it quite clear that although Qt applications can be run on the Symbian operating system, their Meego platform is going to be the future of Nokia smartphones. You can read more about this story via theregister.co.uk.
