A few days ago we told you about the HTC Edge that could be the first smartphone to feature a quad-core processor that was rumored to be the new unit from Nvidia. Now Nvidia officially reveals the Tegra 3 processor, which promises to bring PC quality on your mobile device.

The shiny new processor will certainly find its way into many new portable devices in the coming months, and Asus started off earlier today with the announcement of the new Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime. TechRadar are reporting that the processor was formerly known as Kal-El, and is five times more powerful than its predecessor the Tegra 2.

Matt Wuebbling, Nvidia’s Senior Product Manager said “Our next-generation Tegra processor is widely known as the world’s first quad-core mobile chip”. The Tegra 3 is based on the ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore microarchitecture, which consists of four cores that can run at speeds up to 1.3GHz. It also has a stealth fifth core, which can be used for the more basic tasks when the device doesn’t need to power the other four.

Nvidia’s new Tegra 3 improves over the Tegra 2 in all features such as better audio, graphics, bandwidth, memory, processing, and video support. It also has a new 12-core GPU that delivers up to three times more graphics performance, and will also support 2560 x 1600 resolution as well as 3D stereo.

The company also says there are more than 15 Tegra 3 capable games being developed, with over 40 promised on the Android Tegra Zone app by the end of the year.

Yeaterday we first introduced you to the HTC Edge, the reason why this smartphone is so exciting is because it is said to be the first-ever smartphone to boasts a quad-core processor. Today we’ll explain just what this monster of a smartphone should be capable of.

Let’s get the ball rolling by reminding you that the NVIDIA Tegra 3 “aka Kal-El” platform consists of four cores and a companion core. The performance cores will run at up to 1.5GHz each and the companion core will run at a maximum of 500MHz – therefore any of you who were worried about battery life can see that steps have been taken to ensure that you device’s battery won’t drain too quickly.

To give you some insight about performance we have embedded an image below which shows one Kal-El processor running the same benchmark as an Intel Core 2 Duo and a dual-core Tegra 2 processor – in this test the higher score is better, the results are as follows: Tegra 2 = 5,840, Core 2 Duo = 10,136 and Tegra 3 (Kal-El) = 11,354.

To see that a mobile processor is outperforming Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 processor is pretty astonishing, however if we also tell you that it does this whilst consuming less battery power than the current Tegra 2 dual-core processors we think that you will be blown away.

So let’s get away from numbers and battery power consumption for now and talk about real-world advantages which the Kal-El platform will bring to the HTC Edge (and any other devices which utilize the upcoming quad-core Tegra 3 chips). Firstly it will obviously mean that everything will run fast, so opening apps and general performance will be much improved – but in terms of gaming performance and HD video capabilities there will be huge improvements.

At the bottom of this post you can see a video which shows the Kal-El in action, it clearly states that these processors are capable of outputting visuals at a resolution of 2560×1600 aka 1440p or (Extreme Definition aka XD). To put this into perspective this video will be at a higher bitrate and a higher resolution than Blu-Ray allows, which obviously means even more pixels on your display. At the moment we don’t really have a mass-market need for 1440p capture or output, but 1080p has been out for a while now and it is about time a new standard started to take off in our opinion.

So there you have it folks, if you were doubtful about the HTC Edge’s quad-core processor in regards to performance and battery consumption, think again, this should really set a new standard for other mobile processor manufacturers to follow, we just can’t wait to see what shows up at CES 2012!

Do you think Apple’s A6 platform will be comparable to Tegra 3?

In today’s world we want fast-performing mobile devices which run for hours from a single charge, well it looks like NVIDIA could be onto a winner with its next-generation Kal-El processors. Apparently there will be one core which runs at a relatively low clock speed which has been optimized for efficiency – meaning it won’t drain your battery too quickly.

From what we can gather all Kal-El processors will feature four Cortex A9 high-performance cores which will obviously give compliant smartphones and tablets some serious processing power, however there will be an extra core dubbed the ‘Companion core’ which operates at a maximum clock speed of 500MHz and handles less intensive tasks – which to our knowledge means that when a device is set to standby or s barely being used the four high-performance cores will be in affect turned off. This ensure that battery life is preserved while the optimized Companion core carries out unchallenging processes.

The image below give us an idea as to how Kal-El chips should operate depending on what the tasks the device is carrying out – obviously the lower number of cores the less power is being used.

When you compare project Kal-El power consumption to Tegra 2 consumption it is obvious that Kal-El is the way forward – what is most alarming is the fact that project Kal-El apparently uses 61% less power than Tegra 2 chips when playing HD video, not only this but power consumption whilst gaming and playing MP3 files is significantly lower as well (see below).

With each core running at 1GHz we are told that benchmark scores are much higher than comparable Texas Instruments and Qualcomm mobile processors – not only this but power consumption is lower – what this means is basically the Kal-El chips will deliver a lot more in terms of performance than current offerings whilst not being too demanding on your device’s battery.

We can’t wait to find out more about the NVIDIA Kal-El project, when we do we will keep you posted. Some more details can be found over at Engadget.

We have a real treat for gaming and smartphone fans now, as graphics specialists Nvidia has just unleashed the very first tech demo for their upcoming Kal-El quad core processor which will be available for Android mobile devices before the end of 2011.

The demo was shown in the form of Glow Ball, a slick looking tilt mini game using the accelerometer. The game was previewed on a unnamed Android Honeycomb tablet with benchmarking icons in the corner and commentary by Nvidia showing the exact capabilities of the Kal-El processor right in front of you.

And the results are nothing short of breathtaking. Never before have we seen these levels of graphical detail on a mobile device, pay particular attention to the dynamic lighting effects in the video, as that’s one of the main highlights for sure.

The beauty of the processor technology will allow developers to create games which features lighting that moves as you play the game in real time, also lighting that responds to the environment the game is based on. Half-way through the video, we see how Glow Ball fairs when only using two of the four processors, and the results are pretty drastic, resulting in a sudden drop of frame rate – basically it’s unplayable.

We’re not sure about you, but Nvidia look to have set the benchmark here for the best looking games on the market, on a mobile device. If you’re someone who is considering picking up a Sony NGP or even an Apple device such as the iPhone or iPad for gaming purposes, you’d be a fool to not consider Nvidia’s future platform as well.

Watch the video below and let us know your thoughts on it.

Forget all of these amateur dual-core tablets that we’ve been telling you about recently, a new competitor has just unveiled their entrant which will be arriving in 2012 – prepare to be blown away, once again.

NVIDIA has just finished announcing their new tablet project, which has been codenamed ‘Kal-El’. It’s in the early stages of development at the moment, but the company has confirmed that it will be running on Google Android, with a Quad Core processor.

Yeah, you heard it right, four cores simultaneously working together to deliver some serious multimedia goodness to users, not to mention becoming the first company in the world to deliver a quad core tablet to market.

According to NVIDIA their quad core processors will be able to deliver performance quality, which is around five times GREATER than that seen in the current dual-core Tegra 2 processors, which are now starting to become mainstream in tablets and smartphones. Furthermore, the tablet will be able to produce longer battery life, since the device will be able to distribute work loads between the four cores evenly, meaning that no cores are over used – resulting in a much better performance for the user.

With four cores at it’s disposal, it also means that gaming won’t be a problem and it should mean that NVIDIA’s tablet will be able to churn out some of the latest 3D games with ease – we’re predicting that NVIDIA will give a demonstration of this soon.

The only downside to the news, is that we’ll have to wait until 2012 at the least, for this tablet to hit the market. Hopefully the company have more tech demos planned though, as we’d really love to see more of this beast in action. For now though, enjoy the video below courtesy of Phandroid.
