It has now been just shy of a year since Notion Ink released the Adam, now we are beginning to hear details regarding its successor, the Notion Ink Adam 2.

If you head over to Notion Ink’s blog you can see some official details regrading the next-generation Adam tablet, what’s clear is that battery life and multi-tasking are two of the main attributes where this Ice Cream Sandwich-based tablet will deliver.

The Notion Ink Adam II will boast a Texas Instruments OMAP44xx processor and one of Imagination Technologies’ PowerVR SGX5xx GPUs, Notion say this processor and GPU combination will help deliver fast and fluid multitasking, HD visuals, advanced image and video layering and more, there’s even mention of professionals using the Adam II for 3D modeling. The OMAP4 processor consists of two ARM Cortex A9 cores (at least 1GHz per core) and industry-leading power management, OMAP4 whitepapers suggest that 1080p video capture and playback are areas where these system on chips excel. Other technologies which were also mentioned include Phoenix Audio Power Amplifiers and Wi-Link 7.0, the latter of which confirms there will be WLAN b/g/n, GPS, Bluetooth 3.0 and FM connectivity.

Something pretty unique about the Adam II is the fact that it boasts “the world’s first Modular Based Software Architecture”, apparently this will play a big part in regards to application development. We don’t know a great deal about this just yet, or the importance of such an architecture, therefore we will keep you posted as we hear more.

We think that the next-gen Adam tablet needs to be a bit thinner than its predecessor and the display needs quite an upgrade, 1024 x 600 pixels spread across a 10.1-inch won’t cut it in 2012, 720p or better is a must – what do you think? Also software is paramount as Engadget say the version of Android which the Notion Ink Adam shipped with was “beta at best”, subsequent updates improved things, but in this day and age the market is unforgiving and Notion Ink can’t afford to slip up.

Did you buy the original Notion Ink Adam? If so, will you buy the next-gen model?

The Notion Ink Adam update to Eden UI, which includes Gingerbread 2.3 has been officially announced; although a release date is yet to be set. There will be a number of new features that will certainly make the new OS update worth the wait. Some of these include the ability to over-clock Tegra, new multi-tasking environment, resolved usability issues and so much more.

We can still remember one of the previous updates, it was bricking the Notion Ink Adam, but we are sure that such an issue will not happen again. The idea behind shifting to Gingerbread is because they want the kernel to be as close to Honeycomb as possible; once this is done then the Notion Ink Adam will become a far greater tablet.

Saying that, the specs are already better than the iPad 2, and we recently discussed that they could even be better than the future iPad 3 – but that is all speculation. The current OS does not have anything decent to offer in the way of music-video player, but this latest update will rectify that and bring with it an equalizer and support for other such features.

The new Eden UI will be fluid and be able to handle a great number of databases. However, the best part of the update is with the Eden UI itself, and how it stops the mobile OS from being static. For a greater understanding of this visit the Notion Ink Adam Blog.

Will you update your Notion Ink Adam right away, or wait to see if there are any issues?

Apple release yearly updates to most of their product line, and with each upgrade they are keeping themselves ahead of most competitors but is this enough? While Apple’s products are pretty slick, in our opinion, it’s true that they are far from perfect, and we know there are competitors, in most of Apple’s product lines, that have better products, so why are Apple still leading?

Marketing is Apple’s strong point, Steve Jobs and his team have managed to make most of their products cool, and most people want an iPod and not a copycat. You can find a better media player with higher specs for less money, but not everyone knows this.

One example is Notion Ink’s Adam, this tablet has an army of fans that have been dying to get their hands on the finished product, and those same people claim the device gives users the best package by far. It’s been stated that Notion Ink’s Adam gives those in the USA a tablet with no contract, the ability to play Flash media, amazing battery life, a massive amount of apps, a 4G WiMax chip, and is extremely cheap to buy. Some people claim it’s the true “2nd generation tablet” and will even be better than the iPad 3 release, which could even come later in 2011 (although that’s a hard rumor to swallow).

Rohan Shravan reported the latest on Notion Ink’s Adam and it’s progression in his last blog post, found here, that showed some impressive achievements and also explained the problems marketing the device to places like India.

Some people still think that the Adam is vaporware, and don’t even know the device has shipped to some people, although stocks are limited. Even if it’s true that this tablet beats iPad 2 and crazily an upcoming iPad 3, in specification terms, it’s the ability to get the device to market in large enough numbers which will stop Notion Ink taking on Apple.

It’s our opinion that the best products in the world are never those that sell the most, it takes a lot more than having the best kit, and the deals made behind the scenes are the answer to real success.

If you want the best tablet, do not aim for the most sold, shop around. Do you think the number of tablet’s sold by a brand helps in deciding which device you buy?

From the moment that customers started to receive their Notion Ink Adam devices early, they found that they were bricking. We recently offered details on how to overcome this issue – but it was not an official fix. However, Notion Ink has now started to send their new devices out with a pre-installed update to the software to solve the problem.

Also those who already have an Ink tablet will be advised by the company what they have to do in order to avoid their product from bricking, that’s according to Android Community. The order process had stopped for a while to understand why the tablets were bricking, which would have cost the company.

Thankfully you will soon be able to order your Notion Ink Adam, which as we know is one of the more elegant tablets on the market. We had assumed that it was an issue with the Android 2.2 OS, but it turned out to be something to so with Mail’d source code. You will be pleased to know that once Android 3.0 Honeycomb is released the Ink tablet will get the update.

The Motorola Xoom will also get the new Android OS, as will some other tablets. This OS has been specially designed for use with tablet PCs, we have been told that it will not be available for smartphones. Alan Ng managed to get hold of a screenshot, which you can see for yourself here.

For those who wish to wait for the second-generation version, then Liliputing is reporting that it should be with us in 9 to 15 months time.

Did the recent Notion Ink Adam bricking issue affect you?

The Notion Ink Adam started shipping last week, and now people have started to receive theirs. However, there seems to be an issue with the OTA, which means that owners are having problems with their Android 2.2 Froyo tablets. Thankfully there is a possible fix, but it’s not easy.

Once the Over the Air Update is pushed some users have been experiencing problems with Tegra 2; we say an issue, the device actually stops booting. Engadget does say that Android Police has been sent a solution to the problem by a fan, but this has forced Notion Ink to stop pushing the updates to the new devices until they figure out the cause.

You are warned that you try the fix at your own risk, but some owners are prepared to take the risk, as they just want their Notion Ink Adam to work once again. Just remember to only try the fix if your device has stopped working after yesterday’s OTA.

You need to make sure that you have a mini-USB to USB cable, Windows or Linux PC and a Adam Recovery Kit, more details can be found on the downloads from the Android Police website. We would like to know if the fix worked for you, or if you have decided to wait for the official fix?

Back in December, 2010 we asked you whether you were going to pre-order your Notion Ink Adam, for those of you who did we now have some great news for you, shipping has started today.

Prior to this we were unsure when the tablet would arrive as Notion Ink were still seeking FCC approval, it looks as if this wasn’t such a hurdle after all, however a recent Engadget article suggests the version of Adam shipping is not in the FCC database.

We do not have an estimated delivery date for you at present, however I would imagine that units will be delivered within a week, you can check your pre-order status here.

If you are seriously considering purchasing the Notion Ink Adam you should check out the the official tech specs, feature overview and design details.

We would love you to come back and leave us a comment when your Notion Ink Adam arrives, let’s hope you won’t be left waiting too long.

Have you pre-ordered your Notion Ink Adam? If so, have you received an email to let you know that it is shipping?
