Since Apple first brought us the iPad last year the market for tablets is starting to really take off. Many different companies are trying to get in on the action by bringing out their own tablet PCs. With various notebooks and laptops available as well, is the life of the desktop PC almost at an end?

An article over at Engadget is reporting on some statistics released by Canalys, these are accompanied by a pretty controversial statement. They are basically saying that devices such as the iPad and the Galaxy tab are PCs, and with this in mind they say ‘We are encouraging vendors to plan for the future and not to remain stuck in the past.’

The figures released show that Apple without the iPad doesn’t even break into the top five of global PC manufacturers. In 2009 the company only had a 3.8 percent share of the market, but with the iPad has seen that grow to 10.8. Tablets which are now coming to the market this year are indeed as powerful as many desktops, so the statement from Canalys may not be so wide off the mark after all.

For those of you who are thinking of purchasing a new tablet or notebook, eHow has written an article weighing up the pros and cons for each device. Would you prefer a tablet over a notebook? And how do you think Tablet sales will compare with PC sales in 2011? Use the link to read the full statement from Canalys.

There always seems to be a constant stream of new laptops and notebooks being released, whether it’s from the likes of Apple, Dell, Sony, or even HP there is a lot of choice available. HP has recently announced the new 11-inch Pavilion dm1z which has the latest AMD Fusion technology.

Notebook review have tested the HP, and said at first glance it could mistaken with many netbooks the company has offered before, but has a lot more to offer than those lower powered devices. Build quality is pretty good, but the one thing which was noted is the middle of the lid which can bend inward with firm pressure. There is also the lack of any expansion bay on the bottom of the HP; instead you will have to remove the battery to gain access to the RAM, hard drive and wireless cards.

Connection wise you will find three USB 2.0 ports, VGA, Gigabit LAN, HDMI-out, and an audio jack for headsets. There is a slot for a SDGC card to expand available storage or upload images from your camera. Performance wise the HP was found to be a pretty capable machine even when tested with gaming.

TechReview Source have also reviewed the HP Pavilion dm1z and mentioned the CoolSense technology which helps to reduce heat buildup, this is achieved with the cooling vents being at the back instead of the bottom. It was found that the keyboard is well designed and comfortable to use. With a six cell battery you can expect to see seven to eight hours of battery life. With prices starting from around $449.99 direct from HP, you get quite a lot for your money.

The specs of the model which they tested was 3GB of DDR3 memory, 320GB 7200RPM hard drive, AMD dual-core E-350 CPU, and graphics are an AMD Radeon HD 6310M. No optical drive is supplied but HP has the choice of two external drives, including one Blu-ray and DVD+/-RW combo drive.

Samsung do not have many laptops – or what they call notebooks – on the market, but what they do have are pretty special. I am not saying that they are the fastest performing laptops on the market, but you cannot deny how well designed they are. One notebook that springs to mind is the Q430-JU01.

The first thing that drew me to this particular device is its 14-inch HD LED Backlit Display with a 16:9 aspect ratio. What this means to the consumer is much sharper images than a number of the other laptops on the market, so ideal for watching HD video content that you have stored.

The aluminum design of the casing and the island style keyboard looks like the love child of a MacBook Pro and a standard Windows laptop. Keeping things ticking is a 1.6GHZ Intel core i5-460M processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, 500GB hard drive and a NVIDIA GeForce 310M graphics card with 512MB of shared memory.

Connectivity for the Samsung Q430-JU01 notebook is pretty standard, 3USB ports, multicard reader, and one HDMI output. When you are on the Samsung website and click on the shop tab, you will then be taken to another page that redirects you to Amazon. Through a partnership that they have with the online retail giant, you can get up to $150 of the normal retail price.
