Back in September we told you about rumors of a new Nook Color that was reportedly in the works, which would follow on from the successful original eReader. Now we have news that a new Nook Color 2 could be coming next week after an event was announced.

PCMag is reporting that invitations were sent out for a November 7th event to be held in New York at 10 a.m. The invite reads “Please join us for a very special announcement”, and comes a few days after other reports that Barnes & Noble were getting a store ready for an announcement on the same day, which would include a revamped Nook Color.

An employee who claims to work in a Barnes & Noble store has said they have replaced a customer service counter with a large Nook boutique. He claimed that the manager said the space was not meant to only hold two Nooks. There has also been talk that Barnes & Noble was getting a $349 tablet ready, which is thought to be called the Acclaim.

The event comes around a week ahead of Amazon’s launch of the Kindle Fire, who has had to increase production ahead of release. The Nook was last updated back in May with a device that was 35% lighter and 15% thinner. The battery life was also improved with less flashing as the pages are turned.

The Nook Color first showed its face in October 2010 and the 7-inch touch screen device costing around $249. It has 8GB of storage that is expandable up to 32GB via a micro SD card.

Last week we told you that Barnes & Noble had just unveiled its new 6-inch Nook e-ink eReader, which as we mentioned was available to pre-order immediately both in store and online. At the time we told you that the device should be shipping to customers on June 10th.

However, that doesn’t appear to be the case, as Rue Liu at slashgear.com has reported that the new Barnes & Noble Nook eReader – which was touted to be smaller, lighter and have at least double the amount of battery life compared to Amazon’s Kindle – has begun shipping earlier than expected.

In fact, Barnes & Noble began shipping the device to customers yesterday (May 31st). The new Nook eReader will be in stock in stores staring from this weekend, and will be priced up at $139. New online orders will also be shipped immediately, arriving just in time for Father’s Day!!

For those of you that need reminding, the new Barnes & Noble eReader comes with a 6-inch full touch screen with the most advanced e-ink Pearl display, a soft-touch rubber surface to the rear of the device, Android 2.1, Wi-Fi radio, the FastPage Zoom Forward feature and 2GB of storage.

Did you pre-order the new Barnes & Noble Nook eReader?

Today’s technology has changed the way many people lead their lives. Now in America sales of eBooks has become the biggest selling format in publishing, which is sooner than analysts had previously predicted.

An article over at T3.com is reporting that the sales of eBooks during February accounted for sales of $90.3m. According to a report from the Association of American Publishers paperbacks saw sales of $81.2m. The jump in sales of eBooks was 202.3 percent higher compared to the same time last year.

Deputy Editor of the Bookseller – Philip Jones – thinks the UK will also catch up with the US but are currently a year behind but “are catching up quite fast”. With more tablets coming to the market this year with many of them having a built in eReaders, sales of eBooks will continue to grow at a fast rate.

But it’s the dedicated eBook readers that have developed their own successful market. This market has become pretty competitive, with devices from the likes of Amazon and Sony selling huge amounts of units. The Amazon Kindle has more than a million free books and is a cheaper alternative to tablet PCs.

Do you have an eReader?

Since Amazon first brought us the Kindle, eReaders have taken off. But Amazon is seeing more competition from the likes of the Nook, which we recently compared to the Kindle. Now there is another eReader available which is less than half the price of the Kindle.

British retailer Asda has the View Quest Mediabox 5 inch eReader available for an astonishing £52, according to an article on TechEye. There are also features which are not available on the Kindle like the ability to store and view photos. A backlight will allow owners to read at night, and the device has a built in voice recorder.

Just like the Kindle books can read in landscape and portrait, and a power saving mode will improve battery life. Asda say the device can also play films as well, and there are offers of buy one get one free on certain book titles. High street retailer WH Smith also has a number of eReaders, and has a device which looks pretty similar to the one that Asda offer, but priced at £64.99. But at the time of writing is out of stock.

You can see the Asda e-Reader for yourself by clicking the link here. The device already has one review from someone who already owns one, and gives it five stars.

Would you consider the Asda eReader?

So far, the Nook Color has been sitting quietly behind the Kindle in terms of e-reader popularity, not to mention the iPad. A recent hack that allowed the installation of Android caught a few eyes, but it has recently been revealed that this hack could damage the unit or worse, explode!

I’m not kidding either. Froyo and Angry Birds running on a Nook Color (see the video below) may seem pretty inconsipuous, but it can be rather passive-aggressive to say the least. Let me explain.

A standard, unmodified Nook Color will automatically shut itself off if it believes that its battery is too hot. It’s a safety precaution, naturally. Installing Froyo is no easy feat either, as once it is finally on the device, the Nook recognises it and shuts off.

So how can you get around this little problem? Disable the Android battery service of course! In case you were wondering, it is a service that monitors the battery temperature, obvious I know.

Anyhow, now that the battery service is disabled, the likelihood of the battery overheating (therefore damaging the unit), or the worse case scenario — exploding — has significantly increased.

Naturally, we do not promote or advise the hacking of any device, but we know you do it anyway. Even Jesse Vincent who initiated this hack advises against it until they have found a successful workaround as they said it is not quite complete. I think that it’s quite some way off if it has a chance of making the device blow up!

Could make do for an impressive firework display though. What are your thoughts on this?

At the moment it would be fair to say that there are only a few major players in the e-reader wars, a chart which recently appeared on MSNBC (shown below) suggests that the Apple iPad is the e-Reader which most people would buy in the next 90 days.

The chart (from ChangeWave) shows that 42% of the people asked wanted an iPad, 33% wanted a Kindle, and just 4% wanted a Nook, the rest of the results went to less popular devices such as the Sony Reader.

ChangeWave go on to say that the Kindle “”is hanging on to a rapidly diminishing lead”, they also go on to say that “the iPad’s share of the overall market has doubled”.

Another chart which features on BetaNews shows the iPad vs. the Kindle in terms of satisfaction, we have embedded the chart below, it shows that more people are very satisfied with their iPad than they are with their Kindle, it also shows that more people are somewhat satisfied with their Kindle than they are with their iPad.

To be honest with you I think that is hard for people not to be biased when it comes to the Apple iPad, yes it is a great eReader, however I can’t help but think that people are very satisfied with their iPad for other reasons rather than its eReading capabilities.

What do you think is the best device for eReading capabilities? (ignoring all other features)

We recently reported that the Best Buy Black Friday 2010 ad scan had leaked, and that the Barnes & Noble Nook was one of the doorbsuters. We said we would talk about the deal in more detail, so here it is. The one thing that you have to remember, this eReader will not be available in all stores on November 26th.

We made a mistake in our previous post; this is in fact the Color Nook, which has a 3.5-inch color touch screen, Wi-Fi and 2GB of storage, although most of your media will be stored on a microSD memory card.

The new Nook is a vast improvement over the previous model, and some have classed this latest device as a game changer. The likes of Amazon and Sony will want to keep an eye on this eReader, as it could start to make an impression on the market.

So lets get down to that all-important price; Best Buy currently sells the Barnes & Noble Color Nook for $149.99, but will be available on Black Friday for $99.99, that’s a saving of $50.

If this deal is not for you, then look at some of the other deals on offer over the BF weekend.

The new Nook Color e-reader from Barnes & Noble is said to go on sale for $249 soon, so it will not be long before a range of accessories will be made available. Surprisingly one accessory has already leaked on the Internet, a “Nook Color Screen Film Kit”, and the image gives us a good indication as to what the e-reader device will look like.

That is not the only surprise; the one who leaked the product was Barnes & Noble themselves. However, David Carnoy from Crave was correct when he said that the product listing would be removed from the website, as it is nowhere to be seen.

Carnoy points out that this looks more of a mock-up than a final product shot, but it does give you a good idea of what to expect. We can clearly see that the device has a touchscreen, but we are uncertain if it will be LCD or another sort of display?

Thankfully, you will not have long to wait, as Barnes & Noble has an event on Tuesday 25, October. During the event we will have a better idea as to what the new Nook Color will look like along with any accessories.

What will Barnes & Noble have to do to persuade you to purchase the new Color Nook e-reader?
