The reason it has been suggested is due to an 8-K report that appears on the Barnes & Noble website for a filing of a new eReader device, but there could be more to it. Also, we know that the current OS lacks versatility.

In that form it says that an announcement will be made on May 24th, but the strange thing is, they filed it just to fulfill Regulation FD requirements. So there you have it, there is no proof of either, and since rumors have been thin on the ground of a new eBook device, the only other explanation is an Android update. however, if there were a Nook Color 2, or whatever they will call it, what specs would you like to see?

Some of you will wonder why there will be another update so soon after the Nook Color got Froyo, but Barnes & Noble need to do all they can to keep users happy. Having said that, the likes of WSJ believes that a new device is on the way, and will be a combination between a tablet and an eReader.

They believe that it will be the most powerful Barnes & Noble device yet, and will run on Google Android Honeycomb. As yet there are no details on said device, so this is all just speculation. They could decide to go all out, or just launch a new eReader with just a few minor tweaks here and there.

What will Barnes & Noble announce, a new eReader or a Nook Color Honeycomb update?

Nook Color: Android eReader Update, Lacks Versatility http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/04/26/nook-color-android-ereader-update-lacks-versatility/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/04/26/nook-color-android-ereader-update-lacks-versatility/#comments Tue, 26 Apr 2011 08:26:55 +0000 Peter Chubb http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=128684 We already knew that the Nook Color was going to receive an update in April; we also reported that it has now gone live. However, there are still reports that the Android eReader update lacks versatility. We cannot say for certain if it is still an issue with Google’s mobile OS, or if it is a fundamental issue with the hardware itself.

No matter what way you look at it, it will never seem to match up to Amazon’s Kindle or the iPad 2 – or the original iPad come to that. OK, so we know that it is a little unfair to compare the Nook Color to the iPad, as they are two different beasts, but they both run a mobile OS – so they are kind of similar.

eWeek are those who believe that the Barnes & Noble device will never match the two mentioned above, and have even given ten reasons why. Five of those look at why it lacks versatility, and for the most part we would have to agree – but do you?

There are a few areas where the Nook Color does a better job than the Kindle, but they are few and far between. However, the only thing that the eReader has going for it against the iPad is its price. The Nook is trying to be far more than just an eReader, as it comes with a number of pre-installed apps, but unlike David and Goliath, the giant is winning this battle.

Do you believe that the Nook Color with its new Android update still lacks versatility?

Nook Color April Update v1.2 Live: Download With Android 2.2 (Froyo) http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/04/25/nook-color-april-update-v1-2-live-download-with-android-2-2-froyo/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/04/25/nook-color-april-update-v1-2-live-download-with-android-2-2-froyo/#comments Mon, 25 Apr 2011 15:36:18 +0000 Daniel Chubb http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=128625 Towards the end of March we posted details of the Nook Color update for April, and we can now confirm that the Nook Color v1.2 download went live today, which features Android 2.2 (Froyo), enhanced NOOK Books, a new app store, and Adobe Flash Player.

Barnes & Noble will make the upgrade live over Wi-Fi next week, but for now you can download manually if you wish via this link. The new app store includes a few improvements; one is an email app that will help you organize web mail. You will find 125 new apps in the store, and its reported that over 5,000 Android developers are building apps.

Those that cannot wait for the Wi-Fi upgrade can read manual download instructions in this article, which takes you through the simple process of updating your Nook Color to version 1.2.

It’s the view of Barnes & Noble that they have the best value for money tablet, which is much cheaper than Apple’s iPad 2. Would you agree?

Nook Color Gets Price Drop: Retailer Competition http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/03/01/nook-color-gets-price-drop-retailer-competition/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/03/01/nook-color-gets-price-drop-retailer-competition/#comments Tue, 01 Mar 2011 09:00:55 +0000 Peter Chubb http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=123720 While looking around on eBay last night we came across something that may be of interest to you, a Nook Color price drop. There could be a number of reasons why Barnes & Noble has done this on their official eBay store page, but our best guess is that it is retailer competition. What this means is that they wanted to try and compete with other cheap prices that had started to appear on the Internet.

The usual price is $249.00, but once you apply the eBay coupon code you will get $50 off, as well as free shipping. The Nook Color was a very popular device when it first launched, but with a price tag of just $199 it is now a more attractive devices to read your eBooks on. We cannot be certain how long this deal will go on for, so you best not ponder too long.

So it does look as though Barnes & Noble are trying to compete with other online stores, but is there more to it? The company knows that they not only have to compete with other eReaders, but also tablet device as well. The reason for this is that they are able to gain access to the Kindle Store, such as the iPad, and with a new version coming out soon; the market is set to get a whole lot tougher.

The biggest rival to the Nook Color is Amazon’s Kindle; both have their good and bad points, so it just comes down to what you want from the device. The Nook has more style, while the Kindle has a much better screen and battery life. So if you are do not care what a device looks like, then the best choice has to be the Kindle – its also cheaper as well.

Will the price reduction persuade you to purchase the Nook Color, or is $199 still too expensive?

Nook Color 2: Most Wanted Specs and Features http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/02/12/nook-color-2-most-wanted-specs-and-features/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/02/12/nook-color-2-most-wanted-specs-and-features/#comments Sat, 12 Feb 2011 09:42:20 +0000 Peter Chubb http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=121751 Love it or hate it the Nook Color from Barnes & Noble has been well received, that much can be seen from the comments that we had regarding an article asking if the eReader was better than the Amazon Kindle. There is already talk about a Nook Color 2, but what specs and features would this 2nd generation version need to have to make it even better?

The current version is considered to be a dream device, not only for reading eBooks but for also how easy the device is to hack. Engadget believes the Nook Color to be a truly great eReader, but they thought that it was about time that they asked their readers what they would like to see in the next version.

The reactions vary a lot, but what we can see is that consumers would like more physical buttons, but not soft ones. The sensitivity needs to be improved, more so towards the edges. One of the most important features that we think that the Nook Color version 2 should have is faster Android OS support, so maybe version 2.3 or higher once they become available. Having said that, it is a know fact that the Nook Color is very easy to hack to the last Android OS version.

There have been a few suggestions that a camera is needed, but I’m not too sure about that. The idea of thousands of Android apps pre-installed is another popular feature wanted; again cannot see that happening. If Barnes & Noble were to make hardware upgrades then they will need to upgrade its battery; we will just have to watch this space.

What features would you like to see in the New Barnes & Noble Nook Color 2nd generation?

Nook Color Update v1.1: Firmware Improvements and Problems http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/01/31/nook-color-update-v1-1-firmware-improvements-and-problems/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/01/31/nook-color-update-v1-1-firmware-improvements-and-problems/#comments Mon, 31 Jan 2011 12:53:54 +0000 Chris Cook http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=120253 Been having problems with your Nook Color? Wish browsing was a little easier? Now it can be with the firmware update v1.1. This update, provided by Barnes & Noble, is meant to improve a number of different things, from fixing generic bugs to being able to pinch and zoom. The update should come automatically if you are connected to Wi-Fi, otherwise you can download it manually over on their website by clicking here.

Although you may be disappointed that the Nook Color update still will not offer any expansion on apps or anything in the way of a Nook app store, the download should go smoothly making your Nook Color interfacing more enjoyable. It is rumoured to have been said that Barnes & Noble will be updating the Nook OS to Android 2.2 later this year, however no date has been confirmed as of yet. Read cnet’s article for a full review on how the latest firmware update went.

Some Nook users have installed a custom firmware, which has allowed them to turn the Nook Color into something much more, this would include installing Android apps from the Android Marketplace. If you are one such user, then you should know installing the latest official firmware (v1.1) would overwrite your custom installation. Have you added a custom firmware?

An article over on Geek.com has taken a look at the future of Nook, and they ask if its last year’s model or a sinking ship? We’re sure some users may have a few words on this very topic, check out their article and let us know what you think the future holds for Nook.

If you have installed the latest firmware, let us know how you’re finding it and if the update has been problem free, or not?

Nook Color Review: 5 Videos Give Insight http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/01/11/nook-color-review-5-videos-give-insight/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/01/11/nook-color-review-5-videos-give-insight/#comments Tue, 11 Jan 2011 22:08:11 +0000 Jamie Pert http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=118680 Choosing the right eReader these days can be a hard task, therefore we thought that we would make things easier by bringing together a few Nook Color reviews which should help you decide whether the Barnes & Noble Nook Color is the right eReader is for you.

If you check out this video you can see the Nook Color unboxing and first boot, this gives you an idea of what you are getting for your money, I think it is fair to say that Barnes & Noble aimed to impress with awesome packaging, which makes you straight away think that the Nook Color is a quality product.

There are three different Nook Color video reviews you should watch, Engadget’s video review clearly shows a device with a responsive and extremely clear display, however there are some formatting and web browsing imperfections.

GoodeReader seem extremely happy with the Nook Color, overall the pros outweigh the cons and they are complementary of its sleek ascetics, that said they also suggest that it lacks in web browsing functionality. In terms of being an eReader it is great, the LCD display is a serious competitor to its E-Ink rivals, you can see the full video review here.

Finally there are two more videos you should check out, Consumer Reports’s hands-on review can be seen here, if you are seriously interested in the check out this video for a detailed look at file format support and capabilities.

Below we have embedded Consumer Report’s review, watch it and let us know whether you decided to choose the Nook Color.

Nook Color: Android Hack Could Cause Overheating, Or Explode http://www.product-reviews.net/2010/12/08/nook-color-android-hack-could-cause-overheating-or-explode/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2010/12/08/nook-color-android-hack-could-cause-overheating-or-explode/#comments Wed, 08 Dec 2010 16:00:01 +0000 Jamie Pert http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=116658 So far, the Nook Color has been sitting quietly behind the Kindle in terms of e-reader popularity, not to mention the iPad. A recent hack that allowed the installation of Android caught a few eyes, but it has recently been revealed that this hack could damage the unit or worse, explode!

I’m not kidding either. Froyo and Angry Birds running on a Nook Color (see the video below) may seem pretty inconsipuous, but it can be rather passive-aggressive to say the least. Let me explain.

A standard, unmodified Nook Color will automatically shut itself off if it believes that its battery is too hot. It’s a safety precaution, naturally. Installing Froyo is no easy feat either, as once it is finally on the device, the Nook recognises it and shuts off.

So how can you get around this little problem? Disable the Android battery service of course! In case you were wondering, it is a service that monitors the battery temperature, obvious I know.

Anyhow, now that the battery service is disabled, the likelihood of the battery overheating (therefore damaging the unit), or the worse case scenario — exploding — has significantly increased.

Naturally, we do not promote or advise the hacking of any device, but we know you do it anyway. Even Jesse Vincent who initiated this hack advises against it until they have found a successful workaround as they said it is not quite complete. I think that it’s quite some way off if it has a chance of making the device blow up!

Could make do for an impressive firework display though. What are your thoughts on this?

Nook Color Hacked: Runs Android 2.2.1 http://www.product-reviews.net/2010/12/06/nook-color-hacked-runs-android-2-2-1/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2010/12/06/nook-color-hacked-runs-android-2-2-1/#comments Mon, 06 Dec 2010 12:11:08 +0000 Daniel Chubb http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=116298 The Nook Color is a great little device but has it just got better? We have done a comparison before between the Nook Color and the Amazon Kindle, where we were asking you, which is the better device? We also brought you our thoughts on how the Nook Color could possibly become a game changer. Well perhaps now it could be!

Nachiket Mhatre over at techtree.com has reported that the $250 device has been hacked and has been spotted running the Android 2.2.1 OS. This is brilliant as the so called e-reader is more than up to the task of being a decent little Tablet PC, it has an 800MHz processor, a capacitive touch screen display with 1024 x 600 pixel display as well as 512MB of RAM. You can see a video of the device running the OS at the bottom of the article.

It is great to see someone moving it away from the Barnes and Noble’s own Nook UI and actually putting the device to the test. It also makes for a great cost saving, especially when you think of the price of the current Android tablets out there. Nice work!

What do you think of the Nook Color being hacked and running the Android 2.2.1 OS? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
