Perhaps the most jaw-dropping thing we got to see at this year’s Mobile World Congress was the Nokia 808 PureView and its camera which takes photos at amazing 41 megapixel resolutions, today however we have heard some annoying news for any American wishing to get their hands on this impressive smartphone.

Engadget and multiple other sources tell us that there are no plans to release the Nokia 808 PureView in North America. Obviously this doesn’t mean that it will be impossible to get hold of, it just means you’ll probably have to import it. This means that only those with money to buy this smartphone outright will have the chance to get their hands on the 808 PureView as no US carriers will be offering it at a cheaper price as part of a two or three year agreement. Back in August last year we told you that Nokia planned to scrap Symbian smartphone launches in North America, however we must say that we thought that Nokia may have made an exception for this particular device.

There are mixed opinions about the Nokia 808 PureView at present, yes the camera is ground-breaking and could put serious pressure on the compact digital camera market, but many are put off by the software which it runs on (Symbian Belle). We want to see PureView-like technology come to Nokia’s future Windows Phone 7 smartphones instead – we don’t need 41 megapixel quality, but anything greater than the Lumia 800′s 8 megapixel camera would be a huge step in the right direction.

If you head over to Cnet you can get up close and personal with the Nokia 808 PureView, however this will probably rub salt into the wounds of any North American reading this who was hoping to get this smartphone from their preferred carrier.

Will you import the Nokia 808 PureView? Or does the potential price tag worry you? Also what’s your view on it running Symbian Belle?

The 2012 Mobile World Congress is well under way now over in Barcelona, Spain, and we are now being treated to some great looking handsets already. Nokia really means business this year as besides their push into the Windows Phone platform the company has just announced the Nokia 808 PureView, which has a camera that will makes some go weak at the knees.

Nokia has revealed its new flagship Symbian smartphone that comes with a 41-meagapixel camera, and no that is not a typo. The company has achieved this by combining Carl Zeiss optics with new technology that Nokia has developed that over samples pixels. According to an article on Mashable the PureView technology will be coming to other Nokia handsets in the future.

Of course the higher the pixel count doesn’t always mean the best quality images, so the device will have to be seen in action in the wild to establish the cameras quality. The new smartphone also has a new feature called Rich Recording, which will allow owners to record quality audio up to 140 decibels according to Nokia.

Other features of the device aren’t exactly going to set the world on fire, as it uses a 1.3 GHz single-core processor. The screen is a 4-inch AMOLED ClearBlack touchscreen that will have Corning Gorilla Glass, and the 808 PureView comes packing only 512 MB of RAM with 16 GB of onboard storage, which is expandable up to 48GB via microSD. It will also feature Dolby Headphone technology along with Dolby Digital Plus for 5.1 surround playback.

NFC connectivity, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, 1400mAh battery, and a 3.5mm headphone jack rounds up most of the features of the device, which measures 123.9 x 60.2 x 13.9mm that goes up to 17.95mm at the camera and weighs in at 169 grams.

The Nokia 808 PureView has been promised to be hitting the Euro Zone in May priced at around 450 Euros. Update: Below you can see an image of the camera sensor unit for the 808 PureView that Nokia has shared on Twitter, but it shows any device using this tech will not allow for a thin handset.

The UK carrier Three has just revealed that the Nokia Lumia 710 is now available from their website, we’ve just had a glance at the prices and we have to say we think that this smartphone could attract quite a lot of attention and introduce people to Windows Phone 7 (7.5 to be exact) for the first time.

The Lumia 710 isn’t as aesthetically pleasing as the Lumia 800, but it still boasts some pretty desirable specifications, to start with there’s a 1.4GHz Snapdragon processor, a 3.7″ touchscreen display which outputs at 800 x 480 and utilizes ClearBlack technology and Gorilla Glass protection, a 5 megapixel camera, 8GB of internal storage (no memory card slot), WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR.

You can buy the Lumia 710 outright for £199, alternatively there are plenty of 24 month deals available all of which will give you the handset for free as part of the agreement. The cheapest option is the Text 500 plan, this costs you £22 and gives you 500 minutes, 5,000 texts and 1,000MB of data usage. Alternatively you can pay £25 per month for the Text 500 All-you-can-eat-data plan, this gives you the same minutes and texts as the last, however you get unlimited data usage (All-you-can-eat).

The most expensive price plan is great for those of you who like to chat, text and browse a lot, ‘The One Plan’ costs you £29 per month and gets you 2000 talk time minutes, 5,000 texts and all-you-can-eat data usage.

You can buy the Nokia Lumia 710 from Three here, it is very similarly priced to the HTC Desire S and Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S – which of these ‘three’ would you buy?

Every single smartphone which is currently available features some sort of port for charging and computer connectivity, most utilize the microUSB for charging and data transfer, whilst all iPhone models feature the Apple’s 30-pin connector – it looks like Nokia could be planning to release a smartphone in the future which has no ports whatsoever.

It’s no secret that Nokia plans to bring NFC connectivity to future smartphones, however a recent article over at Guardian.co.uk highlights the fact that one of Nokia’s design chiefs has revealed that the Finish company is also paying close attention to wireless charging technologies – could this mean that a portless Nokia Lumia isn’t too far away? It sure looks this way – especially if you read the following quote from Marko Ahtisaari (Nokia’s head of design).

“If you can take away a moving part and make it more beautiful in the placement of the components, we’ll do it, so that’s something where we can certainly keep improving. Take it to the extreme, and why are there any connectors?”

These days people don’t utilize ports as much as they used to, all top-end smartphones feature WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity which both allow for fast data transfer, not forgetting the fact that cloud storage is very popular at the moment and mobile data carriers offer much faster internet connectivity than they did a few years back. So, why do we need USB cables to link our smartphones to our computers? There’s really no need these days.

Some people used to link their smartphones to their computer to update the software phone’s software and perhaps utilize the smartphone’s internet connectivity, however mobile operating systems like Android now allow over-the-air updates and mobile WiFi hotspot functionality. Currently iOS and Windows Phone 7 don’t allow such functions natively, but the hardware is already there so it’s something which could be built into future OS builds. If Microsoft make such progress with WP7 there will be two fewer reasons to connect your Nokia Lumia smartphone to a computer via USB.

Currently all smartphone also feature a 3.5mm headset jack, here consumers can plug-in earphones/headphones and hands-free kits, but there are wireless options available. NFC headphones and headsets are beginning to take off and Bluetooth hands-free kits have been around for years, so despite the fact that a 3.5mm headset is convenient it is by no means a necessity.

Finally let’s talk about wireless charging. CES 2012 showed that wireless power solutions are making strides, albeit slowly, but we remember when 3D technology and dual-core processors coming to smartphones was laughed at, so it’s not out of the question.

Would you like a portless smartphones? Or do you think current ports are convenient?

For those of you who are continuing to experience battery life related issues on your Nokia Lumia 800, we have an important piece of news to bring you. Nokia recently released a new software update for their latest device, and we have now heard specific details from the company on what the update addresses exactly.

According to the Finnish phone maker, the recent 1600.2483.8106.11500 update has solved issues relating to battery life, although obviously some of you are still having problems, highlighted in the ongoing discussion on Nokia’s official boards prompting the official word from Nokia, as reported by Engadget.

Nokia admits in their notes that there was indeed a problem involving battery life of the Lumia 800 and that the recent update intends to improve the situation, or by Nokia’s own wording – allow consumers to make use of the ‘full battery charge capacity correctly’. If you have installed this update, you may be seeing an improvement in battery life, but that’s not the only fix that Nokia aims to solve.

The forum post also confirms that a future update will target audio and camera bugs that are present in the current software, although those of you who are experiencing these problems will have to hang on for the time being.

Unfortunately, it looks like Nokia may have to investigate battery life problems further, as if you take a look at this discussion thread on the official boards, you can see that a lot of users are still complaining about battery life capacity problems even after installing the 1600.2483.8106.11500 update. We’re confident though that the problem will be sorted out eventually, but at least we’re not hearing of any sudden drops of battery life and it’s nice to see Nokia treat the battery life problems head on, rather than perhaps release an updated model with improved battery life like a certain other phone manufacturer has.

If you have a Nokia Lumia 800, let us know how your phone is coping at the moment. Are you still experiencing a loss of battery life after installing the latest software update?

While it’s no secret that Nokia are not the force they once were in the mobile market, it can be said that things were beginning to look up for them at last when a deal with Microsoft meant they’d be using the Windows Phone OS on their latest smartphones. The OS has been well received so far however it seems it has still failed to prevent losses for the Finnish company.

The news comes today after Nokia posted its third recording of heavy quarterly losses in a row.in the fourth quarter last year the company posted a €745 million profit; however the totals seemed to have completely reversed as the fourth quarter this time around shows losses of €1.07 billion, despite an encouraging start from its Windows Phone selection.

As reported by Cnet the company also recorded a 29% decrease in the amount of handsets sold compared to the previous year, where they managed to shift 123.7 million devices in the fourth quarter of 2010. Even the average cost of their handsets has fallen over the course of the year, a figure that you would normally expect to see rise regardless of the success a company was having, from €69 last year to €53 now.

Meanwhile things could still change for the better as their new Lumia range seems to be taking off. Nokia CEO, Stephen Elop claims the company has already sold over a million of them since they were introduced back in October last year. He also said the company plans to roll out the devices to other markets in the world including Latin America and China throughout this year, while also pointing out that while the market already has some strong competitors they still have a chance of success adding ‘with Lumia, we have demonstrated that we belong in the field.’

Do you think Nokia can turn their profits around with Windows Phone?

Rogers customers looking for a new smartphone in the coming months will soon be able to choose the Nokia Lumia 710 if a recent Engadget article turns out to be accurate, apparently it will be arriving in the first week of February – today we have full details in regards to price options thanks to a leaked product launch flyer.

The flyer shows that you will be able to buy the Lumia 710 outright for $254.99, however this drops to $149.99 if you agree a one-year deal, $99.99 if you agree a two-year deal and just $49.99 if you agree a three-year deal.

This affordable smartphone is pretty impressive especially given its price, you can see Nokia’s full product overview here, with a 3.7-inch display, a 5 megapixel camera capable of 720p shooting, Microsoft’s intuitive Windows Phone 7 OS, Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR, WiFi b/g/n, a 1400MHz processor and 512 MB of RAM it will be very tempting!

To give you an idea of just how good this deal is you should head over to Rogers.com, the outright price is $105 lower than BlackBerry Curve 9360 and $200 cheaper than the 8GB iPhone 4, interestingly on-contract the Lumia 710’s $49.99 price tag (as part of a three-year deal) is the same as the BlackBerry Torch 9810 and 8GB iPhone – which would you choose out of these 3?

Recently we have began hearing how Nokia has now shifted over 1 million Lumia 800 smartphones and they plan to build on this with the Lumia 900, we think this is great but it’s also nice to see mid-end offerings which are affordable, therefore it will be interesting to see if the Lumia 710 becomes a popular Rogers offering.

Will you buy the Nokia Lumia 710 from Rogers? If not, why not?

We have a lot of speculation recently about when the Nokia Lumia 900 will be launching in the UK. One thing that is known is that AT&T will have the device exclusively in the US. Now it seems that Nokia has got tough with the AT&T Lumia 900 price and release date.

The company seems to be serious on its assault on the US smartphone market if a report on BGR is to be believed. A trusted source has told the site that the 4G Windows Phone running device will be available for only $100 with a two year AT&T contract.

It is also being claimed that the Nokia Lumia 900 release date in the US will be on March 18th. This release date could alter slightly as the carrier has yet to give the full technical go ahead for the handset. If this price turns out to be accurate it will make it one of the lowest price 4G LTE handsets available.

AT&T is believed to be coughing up at least $200 million into marketing the launch of the Lumia 900, along with other devices on the platform such as the HTC Titan II. Microsoft has a fight on its hands with the Windows Phone platform, as most of the US market is taken up by the Android and iPhone platforms.

But providing a high end smartphone at this low price would certainly tempt many consumers to give Nokia and Windows Phone a try. Would you get the Lumia 900 for only $100?

Earlier this week we brought you news that Nokia’s Lumia 900 was headed to the UK sometime in June after Carphone Warehouse listed the handset on its website. Now it seems the mobile retailer has since pulled the page from their website creating confusion over whether we will be seeing the device in June at all.

The Nokia Lumia 900 was officially unveiled at CES 2012 before its exclusive launch in the US where it is believed AT&T is the only carrier to offer the device so far. News that the smartphone would be making an appearance in the UK was quickly followed although nothing official from Nokia was ever announced. While the news was welcomed by many it appears now it is false or at least premature after today’s news.

A spokesperson for Nokia told T3 that they had ‘no knowledge’ of plans to for a UK release of the Nokia Lumia 900, which for now remains a US exclusive despite growing interest from British consumers. Carphone Warehouse should feel a little guilty for whetting the appetite of some of their customers who seem eager to snap up the 4G LTE smartphone, unless they actually intend to offer it at some point.

Here is a reminder of some of the other features the UK consumers look set to miss out on with the Nokia Lumia 900. It will of course be running Windows Phone OS and is packing a 1.4GHz processor, a front-facing camera, a rear-facing 8 megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording capabilities and a 4.3” ClearBlack AMOLED display. Unfortunately we will have to wait and see what happens in the near future before we will know if this impressive smartphone will be heading to the UK at, in the meantime we shall just have to make do with the Nokia Lumia 800.

Would you like to see the Nokia Lumia 900 heading to the UK?
