However, the search engine giant is about to get some series competition, as Nokia is offering its Ovi Maps for free.

Google is sure to feel the impact of this latest move by Nokia as they are offering the free maps worldwide and not just in the U.S. like the search engine giant. According to Engadget, Nokia have said that they will launch the free Ovi Maps in 74 countries in 46 languages.

Engadget also reports that the free service can operate completely offline, Google Navigation software needs data connectivity at all times. The free maps is now live for all Nokia users, well except for N97 and N900 owners. However, they are to offer support for future Maemo handsets.

Those who use the system will benefit from turn-by-turn voice guidance as well as safety camera alerts, traffic information, speed warnings and lane assistance. There is even a pedestrian-only zones features, this is available in more than 100 countries.

Not all Nokia phones are supported at the moment, but all new Nokia GPS handsets will be from March this year. If you own a 5800 XpressMusic, 5800 navigation edition, N97 Mini or a number of handsets from the E series, then you are in luck.

Although Nokia are keeping things quite experts have an inkling as to what will be revealed, this is thought to be a revamped Ovi app store.

Back in December Nokia’s Vice President announced that “All the while there’s been this new platform being built in the background, which we’ll be talking about in the next couple of months and launching in the spring with what we’re calling 2.0.”

It is thought that whatever the main announcement ends up being it will be made by by Anssi Vanjoki and Mark Loughran, Anssi is the Executive Vice President of Nokia and Mark is Nokia UK’s General Manager.
