In the early part of this year we provided you with information on the release of two web browsers that were going to be available on Maemo’s operating system, which are Firefox and Google chrome.

Now there is an article over at slashgear.com that was written by Chris Davies, about a system update v20.2010.36-2, which offers full support for Ovi Suite and fixes a few bugs as well as makes the N900 perform much better.

The new version is available as a manual update with the Nokia Suite via a PC, or you can just wait until the big yellow exclamation mark shows up on your screen. When it’s done, you will be able to download music or popular apps including Tower Boxx Deluxe 3D and Angry Birds.

What issues did the update resolve for you, and is the performance better after?

The idea of an Android port for Nokia N900 allowing you to make calls is something that NITDroid has been working on for some time now, and it looks as though the project is almost ready. This is certainly great news and looks as though it that stands a chance of beating the N9 to market. The N900 was recently seen showing off Face Verification.

If you look at the video below you will see that NITDroid has managed to make and receive calls on the Android port for Nokia N900. You can also see how far the team has got with the cellular data side of things as well.

The idea of an Android port for the N900 is one that has been in the planning stages for a while now, and users have been waiting to get their hands on it. However, Chris Ziegler from Engadget has an interesting question “Are you jumping ship or sticking with Maemo?”

The comments that this question got were interesting, but the consensus seems to be that people would rather stick with Maemo, but what about you?

We are in a world where we have to be more careful than ever when it comes to protecting not only our devices, but our personal data and identity as well. Research is ongoing to find a new solution for when it comes to other identity verification schemes; a password is just not good enough anymore.

Thomas Ricker from Engadget has learned from the University of Manchester that face verification technology is being used on a number of devices, such as the new Kinect for Xbox 360. We were shocked to see the same technology being used on a Nokia N900.

We have wondered why this technology has taken so long to be implemented onto a smartphone, but it’s coming. The system measures 22 facial features of the smartphone user by using the front-facing camera – something that could be used on a number of other handsets, such as the iPhone 4 or the HTC EVO 4G.

We have a video for you below where you can see the Nokia N900 in action with the real-time face tracking, although we cannot tell how long it takes for the system to verify the user. What other devices would you like to see this on?

Earlier today we revealed that a new firmware had been launched for the maemo-based Nokia N900, we have now came across some details and a video for a new feature being dubbed the ‘Nokia Instant Community’.

The Nokia Instant Community is a pretty unique social networking application which may help people make ‘real life’ friendships, rather than cyber buddies.

The basic idea of the Nokia Instant Community is to automatically create a local social network with people within a location such as a block of flats, a sports stadium, restaurant, pretty much anywhere really. This non-localized social network uses your N900′s WiFi to connect to other handsets, but what about security?

You do not need to worry about security as you are in control of who had access to what, therefore if you have a weird neighbor simply change the correct settings to stop this neighbor seeing things you do not want he/she to see.

For me there are two major problems with this, one major problem is that there are very few owners of maemo-based handsets out-there, perhaps it will be brought to other Nokia handsets on different platforms. Another problem is that the feature requires WiFi to be on, therefore battery life can suffer dramatically if you leave your WiFi on in all locations trying to find a new friend!

If you are not yet won over by the idea check out the video embedded below and Nokia Conversations. Do you like the sound of Nokia Instant Community?

It seems that the Android operating system is slowly taking over, and after being successfully ported to an iPhone 3G last week, a bunch of Maemo enthusiasts have now ported the OS to the Nokia N900.

The system seems to be running quite stably, but with limited use such as keyboard support are operational. The two developers, Helmy and DJ_Steve, who are part of the NITDroid project somehow managed to get the kernel and userspace ported to the Nokia Internet Tablet hardware via SD cards to run the OS.

A video has also been uploaded to the Internet to show Android working on the NIT. You can view the short video by visiting the source below.

A recent post on OnlyGizmo suggests that the Nokia N900′s processor has been overclocked to a staggering 1700MHz, however at the moment there is a severe lack of evidence to prove whether this is genuine.

If you check out OnlyGizmo’s article you can see a photo of the overclocked smartphone, all the image shows is the N900 strapped to an Intel Socket 775 heatsink and fan along with a screenshot showing the impressive clock speed.

As standard the N900′s ARM Cortex-A8 CPU runs at 600MHz, however if this latest overclock is genuine it means that the clock speed has almost been trebled.

Previously we have seen the chip clocked to an impressive 1GHz, however the N900′s already unimpressive battery life suffers heavily.

Do you think that this overclock is genuine?

Some news for all of you with a Nokia N900 handset now, as we can confirm that another official Firmware Update has gone live, bringing the version to v3.2010.02-8 (PR 1.1.1).

As reported from Nok Nok, the update is thought to be a minor one, weighing in at just 16.2MB in size. Confirmed changes include improved stability when browsing through the interface, while there is also thought to be added support for more regions – leading to speculation that the N900 could be seeing a global release soon.

The firmware update is available now and should be accessible over-the-air on your N900. If you have noticed any other changes following the update, leave us a comment below.

As you may have already known Mozilla have been planning the release of a Maemo compatible version of its Firefox browser for a while, following a few beta versions an official release has now launched.

Firefox 1.0 for Maemo can be downloaded here at firefox.com/m, some of the best features include the ‘Awesome Bar’ and ‘Weave Sync’.

Weave Sync is a popular add-on for mobile devices as it allows users to “Synchronize your bookmarks, history, tabs and passwords wherever you go”, therefore all of this important information syncs between your desktop and mobile device automatically.

The Maemo version of Firefox also boasts location-awareness and 30 different languages, for more information check out IntoMobile.

A video has recently shown up on SlashGear showing a Nokia N900 running Google Android, as standard the N900 runs the Linux-based Maemo OS.

The video has been embedded at the end of this post, it is not yet clear how he managed to install Android, however I believe it may be a quite popular mod which some may carry out.

The video shows that the OS installation is far-from stable, but impressive none=the-less. The person who carried out the mod is Brandon Roberts, he currently has a dual-boot set up allowing him to choose between Maemo or Android upon boot.

Source

Would you prefer Android on your N900?
