When buying a smartphone these days one of the most important things to consider is which software platform you would prefer, well if you overlook Android, iOS and Windows Phone 7 you may end up with the Nokia N9 which runs MeeGo. But what apps should you choose when you don’t have access to the App Store, Android Market or the Windows Phone Marketplace? Today we will point you in the direction of some great ones.

Out of the box lots of software is pre-installed on the Nokia N9, however if you want to further-enhance your user experience you may find it hard to filter out the good apps from the bad, this recent Nokia Conversations post should assist you.

According to someone who has been using the Nokia N9 for four weeks the following are what he regards as “must-have” apps: 4squick – a Foursquare client, gPodder – a Podcast client with support for YouTube and SoundCloud, Spotify – listen to music on the go, DropN9 – brings DropBox to your N9, NewsFlow – a QT-based Google Reader, TED – an app which full of inspiring and intriguing videos, Parking – an app wich locates where you parked your car and calculates how long you have left on your parking ticket, Sports Tracker – a great companion for every sportsman and finally qgvdial – a Google Voice client for MeeGo. All of the links to download these apps can be found here.

If you still haven’t found enough great apps for N9 you should head over to N9-apps.com, here apps are sorted into three categories “Hot”, “Top” and “Fresh” – the categories are the result of feedback from the community, therefore any of the apps in “Hot” or “Top” are probably worth checking out.

What are your favorite apps for the Nokia N9? Leave us a comment below so other readers can discover great apps!

A couple of days ago we told you that Nokia’s new flagship smartphone the N9 would not be launching in the UK or the US. While most consumers in both countries either want an iPhone or Android device, there would still be some people who wanted the device. Now we have news of more countries that won’t be seeing the device, which begs the question, has the Nokia N9 failed before release as the MeeGo market dwindles?

The handset has seen a lot of publicity from Nokia, but it now seems the company is starting to shy away from the handset. According to Electronista Nokia have now said the N9 will not be landing in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland either. The company has put up a countdown page on its Swedish website recently with a date of September 23rd.

You have to wonder now how many countries will actually see the handset released, and why Nokia is limiting launch of the device. If consumers in the US really are eager to get hold of the device, they can use an unlocked version of the device. The N9 is expected to support both AT&T and T-Mobile, and it will also work with many carriers in Canada.

There may be some hope for consumers in the UK who want the N9, as Engadget are reporting that Expansys have the device up for pre-order. There is no shipping date or price but gives some hope for those who want to get hold of the device.

Recently executives from Nokia talked up the company’s belief in the N9 following the suspected lack of interest in it. They claim Nokia will support the device for years and will release several software updates. But as the number of countries the handset will be getting an official launch dwindles; it makes you think Nokia are putting all their eggs in one basket with Windows Phone 7 devices.

Many people feel the company would have been better off using Android instead of Windows Phone 7 to turn the company’s fortunes around. The decision to use the Windows OS may still prove a good one, but only time will tell.

Are you surprised by the amount of countries not officially getting the Nokia N9?

We recently told you that a Nokia countdown page had appeared for the N9 on the company’s Swedish website. The countdown is due to end on September 23, and at the time it was not known if the date was for other countries around the world. Now we have news that the Nokia N9 release will not be in the UK, so is the device dead already?

The new flagship smartphone which will be running the MeeGo operating system, is seen by many to be the first handset to begin the Nokia fight back as the company tries to regain some of the market share it has been losing in recent times. Now TechRadar are reporting that the Nokia has no plans to offer the device in the UK in the near future.

In a statement the company provided to PaidContent said “Although we are delighted with the very positive reception that the Nokia N9 has received, here in the UK there are no plans to offer the Nokia N9 at present.”

The handset was originally revealed in London, and was well received by most of the UK press but the handset was never confirmed for a UK release. Makes you wonder why though Nokia gave the UK press early viewings of the device if they never intended to launch the device in the country. Nokia have said that it uses “a market by market approach to product rollout and each country decides which products to introduce from those available”.

This latest information follows on from the news that the handset won’t be making the shores of the US. Nokia is probably going to concentrate on launching its range of Windows Phone 7 devices which are nearing release in these markets. We told you earlier that the Symbian OS was being discontinued in North America as the company gears up for Windows Phone 7.

Trouble is there will still be Nokia fans in both countries who wanted to see what the MeeGo operating system was like. But you would have thought the company would want to launch the device in as many markets as possible in an attempt to increase sales. Maybe the company already thinks the handset would fail to make any impact, and is limiting it to a restricted release.

What do you think? Has the Nokia N9 failed already?

Recent years has seen Nokia’s market share in the smartphone market dwindling fast, with handsets failing to impress most consumers. Meanwhile the company is looking to turn its flagging fortunes around as the Nokia N9 MeeGo release is confirmed via a countdown clock, but is it too little too late?

The company is looking to the MeeGo and Windows Phone 7 operating systems to give its smartphone business the shot in the arm it needs. Now the Finnish company has launched a countdown clock on its Swedish N9 page, which was found by the team over at Electronista. There have already been rumors the device will be available later next month, and now with the new clock it is set for September 23.

At the moment it’s not clear what countries and carriers will be getting the device on that date, but Nokia have hinted before the device won’t be reaching the shores of the US. The handset would support the likes of AT&T and T-Mobile though, and also most carriers in Canada.

The Nokia handset is coming with 3.9-inch curved AMOLED display, 1GHz single core TI OMAP processor, 1GB of RAM, and either 64GB or 16GB of storage. As with many Nokia handsets the device comes sporting a great camera. The unit has an 8-megapixel shooter with the usual Carl Zeiss lens, and two LED flash units. It is rumored to be a quicker camera to that which is found on the Samsung Galaxy S II enabling shots to be taken in under three seconds.

Pricing is not yet known but it is rumored to be available for around £600 in the UK SIM free. This new handset could yet prove to be hugely successful for the company, but whether it’s enough to get consumers picking one up over an Android or iPhone handset remains to be seen. Some Nokia fans may be waiting to see what the first Windows Phone 7 handsets might bring.

Are you considering the Nokia N9?

With all the iPhone 5 rumors that we have heard about so far, this has got to be amongst the most exciting yet as we have news of a concept design courtesy of Concept-Phones, which adds a splash of color to the notorious black or white design for the iPhone we have seen until now. Though it is highly unlikely the final product would actually receive a makeover like this, there is no denying that these devices look very smart indeed.

The man behind these concepts is Antoine Brieux, who has produced concepts in the past that have got the imagination going crazy, just as his must be to produce such quality designs. Amongst his work is the likes of the HTC Tube Tablet, which combines a smartphone and a tablet together and the HTC Tube which seemingly integrates all the devices you’d need into one device.

The designer has also produced an alternative iPhone 5 concept that keeps with the traditional color, more likely what Apple will go with for their final product. Despite the tradition with the iPhone colors Apple have dabbled with color in one of their other devices before, like the iPod, so the use of color on another device such as the iPhone doesn’t seem too unrealistic.

If you have a look at the colorful iPhone 5G concepts above you will notice a slight resemblance to a design that is actually being produced at the moment by none other than Nokia with their N9, a MeeGo OS smartphone that also comes in several vibrant colors. Though the looks of a device do not affect performance I personally do not see the harm in providing a color choice, if anything it makes them look slightly less business like which could appeal to more people, and adds an element of personality to an otherwise dull looking device.

As for the rest of the design from Brieux, the layout of his iPhone 5G is pretty much the same as the iPhones we’ve already seen. The Gorilla Glass face with black matte on the back, same home button, two speaker grills, iPod dock at the bottom, on the back a camera with LED flash, headphone jack on top, power button, screen lock and volume controls also included.

So would you buy an iPhone like this? Do you think there should be a color choice in future?

So far we have not heard too much about the Nokia N9, however recently a teaser video was released which let a few things about this upcoming smartphone slip, some of which reaffirmed things we posted back in January.

The video shows a few glimpses of the user interface, this clearly shows that it does not use Symbian^3 or Windows Phone 7, instead Nokia has chosen MeeGo. People have been slating Symbian^3 and there are plenty of WP7 on the market, therefore it will be interesting to see what this news OS brings to the table.

We have embedded the video teaser below, it also shows us a glimpse of 12 megapixel rear sensor which uses Carl Zeiss optics and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Engadget has studied the video more carefully and say that the camera will also feature autofocus.

The general opinion seems to be that the MeeGo OS will be the biggest factor in the handset’s success or failure, we saw Symbian^3 pretty much flop last year with the Nokia N8 and we also know that Nokia will be adopting WP7 in the future, so we don’t quite know what Nokia’s long-term plan is for MeeGo just yet. Our best guess is that perhaps they are looking to develop a single platform for both smartphones and tablets, we just wonder if their platform can compete with the likes of iOS and Android.

Check out the video for yourself below, do you think the Nokia N9 will be another flop?

Even though it’s been well over a month since we last heard anything about the much-anticipated Nokia N9 device, it doesn’t mean that the rumors and speculation have ended. In fact, recent reports have suggested that Nokia’s new smartphone could be making its debut at this year’s MWC.

As Stuart Dredge over at crave.cnet.co.uk recently reported, it’s been known for quite some time now that the Nokia N9 will be one of the very first handsets to run Nokia and Intel’s MeeGo software. There have also been reports suggesting that the N9 will be powered by a 1.2GHz Intel Atom processor.

A recent article on Finnish technology website Prosessori also claimed that Nokia’s upcoming device will feature a 12-megapixel camera, just as the Nokia N8 has. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop is scheduled to give a keynote speech on Wednesday 16th February, which could be used to launch the N9.

However, the Nokia N9 may not be the only device that gets unveiled at this year’s Mobile World Congress event, with recent reports suggesting that MeeGo tablets could also be unmasked during the show. This brings me to an interesting article by Vlad Savov over at engadget.com.

An image of a device that appears to be running the MeeGo software has made its way online, and the people over on the mobile-review forums have been checking it out. As they noted, the landscape centering of the Nokia logo is atypical, suggesting it could well be the Nokia MeeGo tablet.

We can expect to hear more details about the Nokia N9 and MeeGo tablet at the 2011 MWC, which you can read more information about via the mobileworldcongress.com website. Which device are you looking forward to hearing more about?

It has been a while since we heard anything concerning the Nokia N9, and with any rumored handset we see a lot of speculation regarding specs and price. Some more alleged specifications have surfaced for the N9.

Gareth Beavis of Techradar is reporting that a Twitter conversation between two authors of Nokia blogs has thrown up some interesting information. As always such information cannot be taken for granted but may mean the device is almost ready.

The rumors are saying that the Nokia N9 will be powered by a 1.2 GHz processor, and have a 4.2 inch OLED screen. Other features the handset is supposed to have include are a 12MP camera with the usual Nokia Carl Zeiss Optics, 768MB of RAM, and a 1600mAh battery. There is also a rumored gaming engine which can display 190 polygons per second.

Nokia could officially reveal the handset at the beginning of 2011, but going on previous history might not be able to get our hands on the first MeeGo phone until Q4.

A couple of months back we reported the news that Nokia were working on the N9 MeeGo handset. Since then things have been a little quiet, but we have word that an announcement is coming in early 2011 – maybe they smartphone will be at CES 2011?

Not certain where this will leave Symbian, but we know that things have not been going well for the OS for some time now? The current version of the mobile OS seems to be doing well on the new Nokia N8, but it is certainly no match for Android 2.2 or iOS 4.

If Nokia does unveil MeeGo and the N9 during CES 2011, then it could not come at a better time. However, we have to wonder if the mobile OS market will be out of reach for them by the time that comes – yes it is only three months away but a lot can happen in that time? More details on this can be found on Engadget.

If you had to choose from the current crop of operating systems on smartphones, what one would you choose? I’m almost certain that it will not be Symbian.

This time last year Nokia were in my opinion lagging behind in the smartphone market, however it looks as if they are finally getting the idea of what high-end consumers want, this is evident in the photos and specifications for another QWERTY slider the Nokia N9.

Let’s start with the great news (in my opinion), the Nokia N9 runs Nokia’s new operating system, Meego, I have never been a fan of Symbian, and although I have no hands-on experience with Symbian^3 I doubt that it is really comparable to Android, BlackBerry OS or iOS.

We have embedded a couple of photos of the N9 below, the best way to describe it is as a cross between the Nokia N8 and the Nokia 97, specs aren’t known, however the touchscreen display looks pretty crisp compared to previous Nokia smartphones we have seen.

It is thought that Nokia will soon officially announce the N9, hopefully then we will be able to reveal some impressive specs, which could perhaps make this device a player in the impressive high-end smartphone market.

Do you think the Meego operating system will be more impressive than Symbian^3?
