We have some rather exciting news now for all our female readers out there that are thinking of buying a new smartphone, as Nokia has just revealed a new pink version of its popular N8 handset. What’s more is that the handset also comes with a few pink-themed applications.

According to a recent article posted by Adam over on the conversations.nokia.com website, the rest of the phone is exactly the same as the other versions, including the 12-megapixel camera, the ability to shoot HD video and a 3.5-inch OLED display with a 360 x 640 resolution.

As previously mentioned, the Nokia N8 also comes with a 680MHz ARM 11 processor, 256MB SDRAM and 512MB of NAND memory. In regards to connectivity, the N8 features Wi-Fi (b/g/n) and Bluetooth 2.1, as well as an HDMI output. It also comes with Ovi Store and Ovi Maps.

The aforementioned pink-themed applications include the Little Pink Diva Theme that enables you to add a little color to your menus, a Pink Neon Clock and the ELLE fashion app, which helps users keep up to date with all the latest beauty, fashion and celebrity news.

Would you buy the pink Nokia N8 smartphone, or do you just prefer sticking to colors such as black?

All the talk recently surrounding Nokia has been its deal with Microsoft and Windows Phone 7, but the Finnish company has insisted it will not be snuffing out Symbian just yet, and has shown a screenshot of an update for the OS. This update will be available for owners of the N8 and other Symbian^3 smartphones.

An article by Stuart Dredge over at Cnet UK is reporting that a press conference in China had Nokia’s smartphone boss Jo Harlow talking about the Symbian OS. My Nokia Blog has images for the update which shows the new UI has a smaller battery, signal, operator info, and time at the top of the home screen. More information can be obtained by pulling down the top status bar as well.

There is also talk of new flexible widgets, it is not known what these do, but from the images they are different sizes and shapes. No information was given for when the update will go live, but Harlow promised “new devices” and improved hardware performance.

Nokia has run a recent poll asking its users what they think of the deal with Microsoft, and according to a report by David Neal over at The Inquirer, they wasn’t that impressed. The poll asked its users what new features they would like to see, and if they were looking forward to see Windows Phone 7 on Nokia handsets.

There was no options left blank and a range of suggestions were offered including Xbox games and Other. Unfortunately for Nokia it was the other option which got the most votes 22.6%, with a unique user interface pulled in 22%. The “Other” responses had a third of people not wanting the Microsoft deal at all, and to keep use of the Symbian and MeeGo operating systems.

It would seem that so far the idea of having Nokia handsets running Windows Phone 7 has not really inspired customers, but when the operating system does finally find its way onto a Nokia handset people may change their minds.

The Nokia N8 has been out a while now, and was met with some early problems with some users not being able to get their device to turn on. With the Symbian ^3 software the device was seen as a big improvement on Nokia’s previous offerings. There are ways for users of the smartphone to further improve their experience of the OS via Apps.

Phil B over at NOKNOK has got a list of ten applications which can make the Symbian ^3 experience even better. Users can change the themes on their handset, the N8 has quite a few already installed but many more can be downloaded. To improve web browsing N8 users can download Opera Mobile; this provides a much faster and stable browser.

Swype is a great way to improve entering text into the device; it lets you slide your finger across letters without lifting. You can also hold down a key for secondary functions, doing away the need for sub menus. Menus can be organized to suit individual user needs; apps can be put on the main page.

Nokia Messaging is great for a user getting their emails on the move, setting the service up is easy to do and email notifications are then sent to the N8 home screen. What Mobile is reporting of another application Shazam, this allows users to get YouTube videos, get tour and chart information for tagged artists. Users also have the option to buy music from the Ovi Music store.

New N8 models will have this app pr-installed with a 30-day trial when downloaded for the first time. When the 30 day trial is finished users can use the free service but with a maximum of 5 tags per month, or pay a fee of £2.99.

What do you think of the Nokia N8?

According to a recent IntoMobile article it looks as if there could be a major problem with the Symbian^3-based Nokia N8, users are reporting that their smartphone no longer turns on.

Mobile-Review.com’s Eldar Murtazin recently tweeted this message “story repeat itself. Nokia n8 like 5800 has damage parts in first production volumes. N8 are dying across the world. All phones are affected”.

If your N8 has been affected by this problem we would love to hear what Nokia has done to help you, whether you have found a fix and whether they have agreed to replace the fault smartphone under warranty, let us know in the comments section below.

We recently ran an article which picked up on the current microSD mess, and how it so called “breaks” memory cards. But it seems as though these cards can be brought back to life, and it’s all down Nokia.

In the article, we explained that the WP7 makes permanent changes to your memory card, so you cannot use it with other devices. Plus the fact that we should wait for “certified” microSD cards before swapping the old ones out.

It’s all a bit technicial really, but the reason why WP7 phones “break” the memory card is because they take advantage of the “S” in “SD,” the “S” standing for “secure.” Once the card is formatted, they apply a randomly generated password that is stored on the internal flash.

It is not really Microsoft‘s fault that the device breaks your memory card, it is simply doing something that not everyone can understand.

As reported by Engadget who have the whole story, Microsoft never wanted WP7 storage to be expandable, swappable or even removable.

During the early stages in development, Microsoft advised to manufacturers that cards should be “glued in place,” or something similar so that they could not be accessed or removed. Sadly, this message was not taken note of by Samsung with the Focus, who gave the user a fully-accessible slot.

Even so, it is one of many problems that Microsoft and the Windows Phone 7 could have avoided, you can read more into other reasons why WP7 was a disappointment here.

So now, if you are one of the unlucky few who have a damaged memory card. This is how Nokia can help you…

Yet again, according to Engadget, they say that they were able to resurrect a card that they had in a WP7 phone from the dead by inserting it into a Nokia N8 and was able to recover the cards file system. Although the data was erased, they were able to use the card again. Good stuff eh? Apparently, Symbian are one of the very few platforms that also handle the SD card in the right way, and this is why it can read and recover the card.

Good news, huh? Have you tried this method yet? Let us know if it works for you.

If you own either a Nokia N8 or C7 we have some good news for you, Swype has now been released for Symbian^3, this should make text input a lot quicker and easier.

If you have never used Swype and you want to try it out on you Symbian^3 handset check out this link, it has to be said that not everyone likes Swype, however some people think that it is the quickest and easiest way to input text on a touchscreen device.

Swype cleverly allows you to type by simply gliding your finger of the letters in a word, algorithms cleverly predict the words that you write, you can see a demo video of Swype embedded at the end of this post.

Swype has been backed by quite a lot of handset manufacturers, perhaps most notably it comes pre-installed on the Motorola Droid X, Droid 2, Samsung Galaxy S and apparently the Samsung Galaxy Tab, this shows just how popular Swype is becoming.

We would love to hear from you if you have installed Swype on your N8 or C7, let us know if all goes well in the comments section below, perhaps write your comment using Swype.

For those of you who are interested in the quality of the 12MP camera sensor included in the recently released Nokia N8 smartphone, you’ll be pleased to hear that the camera has been given a glowing review.

That review comes to us courtesy of Engadget, as although they have given the handset an overall score of 5/10, they have praised the quality of the camera on the N8, stating that it is currently the best camera on a smartphone by far.

You may think that this was expected since the N8 is only one of a few 12MP smartphones on the market, but it’s rather refreshing to hear that the camera does actually perform, and Engadget has provided media samples to back up their claims.

Unlike the iPhone 4, Engadget state that the N8 produces ‘extremely detailed and natural shots’, and that the LED-assisted autofocus on the handset was the ‘fastest they’ve ever seen’. They also reveal that the camcorder quality is better than that seen on the Droid X, but is choppy in places compared to the likes of the iPhone 4 which records at 30fps – the N8 only at 25fps.

Engadget close off their camera review by suggesting the the N8 is a ‘photographers dream’. If you are a consumer who is buying the N8 solely due to the 12MP camera sensor, it looks like you are going to be very happy indeed.

Check out their full review here and let us know your thoughts on it.

For those of you who have taken a keen interest in either the Nokia N8 or HTC HD7 smartphones, we have a useful video for you to check out now, which compares size dimensions between the two devices.

The Nokia N8 is now available to buy, while the HTC HD7 will be due out in Europe and in the US on T-Mobile soon. Most of you probably know that the HD7 comes equipped with a huge 4.3-inch display screen, but how does it compare to the new Nokia N8 sporting a 3.5-inch display?

Engadget has provided a very useful video as part of their review, letting you see both handsets up close and personal. We also get a look at the thickness of each device and as you can see in the video, there isn’t too many differences in terms of thickness of the HD7 and N8.

Is size really a key factor in your decision to pick up the handset? A lot of people prefer to judge a handset on hardware and software, but for those of you who want to see if the HD7 or N8 fits inside your pocket nicely, check out the video over at Engadget – it is the 4th video in their review.

It’s been a while since we heard anything from Nokia concerning the C7, but we are going to be hearing a lot more about it as Nokia have started shipping the “affordable N8,” their second Symbian 3 phone.

Costing around €335 ($470), the C7-00 is said to be a poorer-mans Nokia N8 having an 8 megapixel camera instead of the N8′s 12, and no HDMI output. More specs can be found on a previous post here. You can also see a video preview of the C7 here.

But the C7 does have some notability, in that the screen response and battery life to that of the N8 are said to be superior. It is also thinner, lighter and comes with an AMOLED display.

Nokia have two more Symbian 3-based smartphones lined up for release before the year is out, the E7 and the C6-01, and with most of the bugs now ironed out and a less-phone heavy release schedule ahead of them, could Nokia’s new wave of phones compete with the iPhone and the growing number of Android handsets?

It’s not easy being top dog, and Nokia has been sitting pretty for years with that title for cell phones but this reputation is increasingly coming under pressure from both Apple and Android. The new Nokia N8 is their flagship device, and the fantastic range of features show staying power for the N8.

Nokia N8 vs. iPhone 4 – The Verizon Wireless device has been reviewed by all the major players, and the performance looks promising, but how does the N8 stack up against the N900, Droid X and iPhone 4G (4th generation)? You can see the Nokia N8 vs. iPhone 4 in this post, which focuses on the camera. Intomobile have also compiled a nice collection of photos from both devices, and they found that the N8 won in the image department. IBTimes has also looked at the N8 versus iPhone 4, and their detailed review looks at the key selling points for both devices.

Nokia N8 vs. Droid X – If you’re trying to decide between the Nokia N8 and Motorola Droid X, this article from Big Phone Fight may be helpful. They take a look at both Smartphones and how they compare in size, connectivity, screen / keyboard, camera, battery life, performance and more.

Nokia N8 vs N900 – Some people would have already pr-ordered their Nokia N8 and could never dream of keeping the N900 instead of the new flagship device, but ITProPortal has gone so far as to list 6 reasons they feel the N900 is better than the new Nokia N8. We find this a bit extreme, so check out their reasons here and let us know if you agree. What do you like more, N8 or N900?

You can also see the official Nokia N8 website here at nokia.com/NokiaN8/. How do you rate the new Nokia N8?
