Currently if you want 3D gaming on the go the Nintendo 3DS would be the first thing you think of. The console is doing really well now as sales of the device gather pace. Today we have news of the Android ICS running 3D WikiPad tablet that will take on the 3DS.

The name may confuse you and make you think it has something to do with the Wikipedia website, but it has nothing to do with it. What you have is the first Android Ice Cream Sandwich tablet that also features a glasses free 3D screen, and according to a report on Mobile Magazine it comes with a gaming dock attachment that can be seen in the image above.

This adds to the tablet a D-pad, dual analogue stick, four face buttons and even built-in speakers for your audio. This will mean you can load up classics such as GTA 3 from the Android Market, and could get even better as other classic titles are added.

Having 3D gaming on a tablet will appeal too many but unfortunately there isn’t a great deal of information on specs and pricing available at the moment. What is known is that is capable of 1080p HD playback in both 2D and 3D, and supports many formats such as FLV, H.264, ISO, VC1, VOB, and M2TS. It also has a mini HDMI port along with USB 2.0.

Storage wise it doesn’t come with much at only 8GB but luckily this is expandable up to 64GB via the microSD port. It is set to launch around the world in the spring and will be available online and from retailers. Head to the WikiPad website to find out more.

Do you like the look of the WikiPad?

When Nintendo first launched the 3DS earlier last year too much fanfare, the device quickly come under much criticism from various sources. The biggest thing being there was not enough quality titles available at launch. Now we can tell you that Zelda helps the Nintendo 3DS zap past 4M sales in the US.

Nintendo has officially announced that it has already reached the figure of four million 3DS consoles sold in the US. According to an article on SlashGear the company has also enjoyed records on three of its popular gaming titles as well. To reach this figure in the time it did means the 3DS has sold faster than the Wii did during its first nine months of being available.

The company revealed that Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, and Zelda had each passed one million sales in the US already. Meanwhile the 3DS was still outsold by the soon to be replaced Will last year in the US, which managed to shift 4.5 million units.

Gamers are still snapping up the older versions of the DS as well with over 3.4 million units being snapped up in the US during 2011. The total units sold so far in the US have now reached 51 million, with the Wii sitting at 39 million.

The 3DS saw it sales fall away not long after being launched that lead to a dramatic price cut. This certainly did the trick as the cut saw sales in the US jump by 260 percent. We have reported before that the 3DS was on course to beat the sales figures that the original DS saw during its first year.

Are you surprised the 3DS is doing so well now?

As you may have noticed recently, there is now considerable spotlight under the Sony PS Vita since the new handheld device has just launched in Japan. We previously told you about some early problems about the Vita, but now we have a new battery life video comparison with the Nintendo 3DS to share with you.

We told you in the past that the Vita was suitably equipped to handle about 3-5 hours of medium usage using the standard battery included in the box. We say standard battery as there’s also an external battery don’t forget, available as an additional accessory for those who are planning to use the Vita on long trips.

As for the standard battery, it performs reasonably well and we have an example of this to show you in a new Nintendo 3DS comparison video that has been made for the Japanese version of the device. In the video, we see the PS Vita go up against the Nintendo 3DS and also a PSP 3000, all of which are said to be running on the highest available settings.

The video shows how the Nintendo 3DS was first to succumb to the test, only being able to manage 2 hours and 35 minutes before losing power. The PS Vita was next to go, but offered an hour more of gameplay time, with the battery dying at the 3 hour and 47 minute mark. The PSP 3000 showed its sheer brute force by managing to last an astonishing 9 hours.

Many gamers will agree that almost four hours of non stop gameplay on the Vita with maximum settings is pretty good going. Don’t forget that this is with the standard battery, so adding the external battery to that should bring the overall life close to the 6 hour mark. On the other hand, less than 3 hours of gameplay for the Nintendo 3DS is not really good enough, especially for a relatively new handheld. It may be consuming a lot of juice via the 3D slider, but then again the PS Vita is running on a quad-core processor and still manages to outperform the 3DS.

What are your thoughts on the outcome of this battery life test? It’s pretty amazing that the PSP 3000 shown here can last 9 hours, the last time we checked – our PSP couldn’t do that.

A few days ago the PS Vita finally released to gamers in Japan, and following the posting of a manual for the device online some early problems have been reported. We now have news of impressive early sales of the PS Vita, but these fall short of what the 3DS achieved in the same amount of time.

We recently told you that pre-orders for the device had sold out prior to the consoles release, and Digital Trends are reporting that Sony has sold over 320,000 units during the first two days of it being available. Sony will be hoping to continue strong sales when the device launches around the world, as the competition from smartphone gaming grows.

The sales figures come from research company Enterbrain, and believes Sony shifted 321,400 PS Vita’s in the first two days of sales. This compares to around 50,000 less units that Nintendo managed to shift with the 3DS for its first two days of availability.

Sony will know though that the tough work is still ahead when the device launches in other countries, and will remember how sales of the 3DS originally dropped shortly after release. This led to Nintendo slashing the price of the console, which has led to strong sales of the device that are on course to beat the last DS console.

The mobile gaming platform has changed dramatically since the PSP was first released with increased competition from tablets and smartphones. Although not always as good, games on these platforms are often very cheap or even free. Recent studies have shown that Nintendo and Sony will account for 42 percent of mobile gaming revenue for this year. This is compared to 81 percent only two years ago.

Sony will be looking to get some of this market back from the Android and iOS platforms, but how many people will want to carry a smartphone and a gaming device? Will you be getting the PS Vita?

There have been many criticisms aimed at the Nintendo 3DS since it was first released earlier this year. The device is now seeing a change in fortunes as big titles are released for it, which has seen the demand for the console rise dramatically. Today we can tell you that the Nintendo 3DS update is now ready for download, which is earlier than expected.

Just over a week ago we first had details about the update but were led to believe it would be made available on December 8th. But now after some initial delays Nintendo has released the update to users according to TechRadar.

One of the new features the handheld console has is 3D video recording along with some new game content in StreetPass Mii Plaza, and includes Find Mii II. Users can also now transfer downloaded software data between other 3DS consoles.

Users won’t be able to shoot the next big movie in 3D on the console as there is a ten minute recording limit. These new features are just another string to the Nintendo 3DS bow as it grows in popularity. Once you have downloaded the update the 3D recording option can be found in the existing camera app.

There are four different modes available to use that include standard, Interval, Montage, and Stop Motion. The standard mode is the only option that provides you to capture audio as well as 3D images though. If you have not received the update yet you can use the Nintendo instructions on how to perform it here.

Have you received the update yet?

The sluggish start to the devices life was put down to the lack of good launch titles, but this is changing thanks to the likes of Mario Kart 7 that is helping the Nintendo 3DS to sell out in UK retailers.

We told you recently that sales of the console had picked up and were set to beat the first year’s sales of previous models. Now following the launch of Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D, these have helped the 3DS to have a surge in sales and MCV is reporting that sources from retailers have said the Metallic Red version has almost sold out.

Other colors are also reportedly in limited quantities with Iain Johnson, GAME’s category manager for Nintendo, said the retailer has “high expectations for the final few weeks before Christmas.” Despite some gamers reservations of the console it is good to see it finally becoming a success, and whether you love or hate Nintendo no one would really want to see a company fail.

Obviously many hard core gamers will probably decide on getting the upcoming PS Vita for their mobile gaming needs, but many younger gamers will probably be getting the 3DS this year under the Christmas tree. Have you recently purchased the Nintendo 3DS?

Recently we told you that the Nintendo 3DS was selling quite well and could even beat sales of the DS during its first year of being available. One of the reasons sales of the device are picking up is the release of better titles for the console. Now one of these Super Mario 3D Land comes under attack from PETA.

Nintendo have just released the new Mario title for the 3DS, which sees you take control of Mario as he journeys through a cartoon land that has man-eating plants and other comical features. One part of the game sees Mario wear a furry raccoon like “Tanooki” suit. This lets him float around in the air and beat a number of enemies with a tail, but according to MSNBC.com the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are not happy.

The group has decided to launch its own campaign that sees Mario as a killer of innocent animals. During the game there is no suggestion that Mario has killed an animal to get his fur suit, as they come from magical squares from the game. They first look like magical leaves when Mario first bumps into them.

PETA have set up a Mario Kills Tanooki website, and in the real world are raccoon dogs that are killed for their fur, and the group feels that Mario wearing such a suit sends out the message that it is ok to wear fur. The site then gives you the chance to play a simple game where you chase Mario to get back his fur.

This is not the first time that PETA have been angry at games, as they created its own version of Cooking Mama to bring the attention of the killing of turkeys for Thanksgiving. Whatever your feelings regarding fur, how do you feel PETA are overreacting to the Mario game?

When the Nintendo 3DS was first launched earlier in the year the price and lack of quality launch titles were partly blamed for lackluster sales of the console. The company has suffered sliding sales of its Wii console as well that massively hit profits. But now it seems the Nintendo 3DS is not such a flop after all following recent sales figures of the console.

Back in the summer the device was given a hefty price cut and now according to Slash Gear the 3DS may even outsell the DS for its first year of being on sale. The NPD Group are saying the 3DS has sold over 1.65 million units in the US, which means it is currently on course to pass its predecessor during the same amount of time.

The DS has shifted around 50 million units since it was first released, and although has a long way to go the 3DS could eventually overtake the DS that is still the best selling platform in US history. During its first year of sales the DS achieved 2.37 million sales in the US with fifty percent of these coming during the holiday season.

Scott Moffitt of Nintendo America said “With a massive lineup of software on the way and the first-year sales record of Nintendo DS in its sights, Nintendo 3DS enters its first holiday season with a full head of steam”. Nintendo have revealed some other sales figures with 675,000 hardware units shifted during October alone.

Of these 250,000 were 3DS consoles with further 180,000 DS units being sold to gamers. The aging Wii console saw an eight percent increase in sales compared to this time last year, and the DS sales jumped 23 percent in one month. Obviously heavy discounts have helped things but it’s pretty impressive considering how long they have been available.

What do you think of the 3DS?

We have some fantastic news for Zelda fans now, especially if you own a Nintendo 3DS. The company has just confirmed that a brand new, original Zelda game is in the works and that it will be the next title to release after Skyward Sword, which lands on the Wii towards the end of this month.

We’re not sure about you, but this has come completely out of the blue, especially so soon after the remake of Ocarina of Time 3D that released on 3DS recently. Bring it on we say, and it is so refreshing to hear that Nintendo intends to make this an original title, rather than another remake.

Eiji Aunoma, series producer of Legend of Zelda, spoke in a recent interview with MyGames, and hear is what he had to say about the new, unannounced Zelda game for the 3DS, as reported from NintendoEverything:

”We are already preparing a new game, a game in the series for the Nintendo 3DS, but don’t think that it is a direct sequel to the Zelda titles released on DS. We are talking about a new game, but it takes much of what has been done on previous handhelds. The next Zelda game on 3DS will be original.”

The news will be met with delight for Zelda fans, and it may even cause those who do not have a 3DS yet, to go out and get one depending on how development of the game turns out.

Considering that this will be an original, what initial ideas do you have for the game at the moment? There is a big hint that the game will take elements from previous handheld Zelda titles, so will we be seeing a hybrid game of past titles such as Link’s Awakening, Four Swords and dare we even say it, a Link to the Past? Having said that, we hope that Nintendo gives a full remake to A Link to The Past as that game on the SNES is considered to be the best Zelda game in history, and one of the best games of all time, period.

What are your thoughts on this new original Zelda game for the 3DS, what ideas would you offer to Nintendo?

If you have a Nintendo 3DS and have been keeping an eye on developments for Tekken 3D Prime Edition, we have some good news for you. Namco Bandai are yet to announce an official release date for the upcoming fighter, but a UK date may have been leaked already.

Footage shown for the game so far has been very impressive, easily making it one of the most anticipated 3DS titles to date. It will come with 3D visuals of course, and also constant 60FPS gameplay, which is going to be a big factor as gamers decide whether or not to pick up the 3DS title rather than say a similar version for the upcoming PS Vita.

For those of you that don’t know, Tekken 3D Prime Edition will also come bundled with Tekken: Blood Vengeance, the 3D movie that Namco has been parading around at recent gaming events, such as the Eurogamer Expo back in September for example.

On to the release date news though, as a listing by the BBFC has revealed that the game could be releasing in the UK on February 17 – meaning that it could be releasing in the US on Tuesday February 14th – how’s that for some Tekken loving?

There is expected to be 40 characters in the game at launch, as reported from Eurogamer, and you can bet that most of the characters from Tekken 6 will be present here. We have included a trailer below showing a recent build of the game – it looks fantastic for a handheld, comparable with PS2 at least? Don’t forget that if you have a 3DS, you can watch this in 3D on your handheld for much better viewing.

If that is the case, let us know your thoughts on the game after watching in 3D. Is Tekken Prime 3D Edition on your wishlist of titles for the 3DS, or are you still too busy playing Ocarina of Time 3D to care about this one?
