Earlier today Apple revealed their new range of iMacs for 2011, and we then told you of some of the basic changes compared to the old version of iMacs. Now we can tell you that the new Thunderbolt ports turn new iMacs to external displays.

Dan Moren from Macworld is reporting that Apple have confirmed to them that the new range of iMacs can be used as external displays by using the new Thunderbolt ports. To achieve this you must first use a Thunderbolt equipped Mac. This could be one of the new 2011 MacBook Pros released earlier this year.

Once connected to the MacBook Pro the 21.5-inch or 27-inch Thunderbolt equipped iMacs, you can then use the display on your notebook. This feature is not available on older Macs as they only have a Mini Display Port.

For the time being Apple doesn’t seem to be working on any adapters to work around this problem, and at the moment no third party companies have revealed any plans to provide some either. Has the new line of iMacs announced by Apple persuaded you to purchase one?

There are strengthening rumors that an iMac refresh could be coming next week. Last month we told you about reports that new iMacs were already on route to the US, and more recently reports were claiming that stock levels of the current version were low. Today new reports are pointing to an upcoming iMac refresh.

Mark Gurman of 9 to 5 Mac is reporting in an article, that a source has told them that new iMacs can be expected the week beginning May 2nd. It is also claimed that Apple will cease shipping current iMacs to resellers beginning this week.

Apple normally releases new products on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, so a new range of iMacs with Sandy Bridge processors and Thunderbolt I/O could be landing on the 3rd or 4th of May. Also there is news of a customer who had an order for an iMac delayed by Apple until a shipping date of May 2nd. This could allow for a May 4th delivery date.

For the moment this is only rumors but we should know for certain within a couple of days. If you are thinking of purchasing a new iMac, it would be wise to hold back and see what news comes from Apple in the coming days.

Are you planning on getting a new iMac?
