You do not have to be a genius to understand that the netbook market has suffered and will continue to suffer with the onslaught of tablet devices. However, that does not stop Acer from launching yet another model, the Aspire One E100. The company hopes that its Android / Windows dual-boot feature will help it sell, but are you convinced?

Maddy Rowe From Online Social Media has managed to get some limited details on the new device, and what we can see the specs are just standard – this would have to be the reason why Acer went with a dual-boot mode, as they needed it to be different.

The 10.1-inch netbook comes with an Atom processor – not certain what speed – 1GB of RAM and 250GB hard drive. Is it me or could we be talking about most of the other netbooks on the market? Having the choice of Windows or Android has to be a nice touch, as different users want different things. If only they would offer Mac OS X.

Donald Melanson from Engadget says that Acer is aiming the E100 towards the education market, and you can see that there is space for school branding. There are no details as to a price or release date, but it needs to be reasonably low in this competitive market.

If you are one for trying out new and interesting things, Jolicloud may be one you want to take a look at. Jolicloud OS has already appeared on the Jolicloud netbook, but now it can be downloaded and installed by anyone with a netbook or suitable computer.

Jolicloud 1.1 has had a number of considerable updates made to it since version 1.0. Among them is the addition of a brand new HTML5 desktop, a better login process with Facebook Connect, enhancements to the UI, and promises of better battery life using some new integrated apps.

We had a brief look at the Jolicloud netbook back in November, and although impressive for a standard, low powered starter netbook, it also has its flaws. The price being one. At £279 ($443), I think it’s fair to say that you would be better off with something else.

Other than the netbook itself, the OS UI looks flash and sleek. All applications are run off the cloud, but some can be installed locally too. The icons are situated in a grid-like fashion — with the ability to have as many desktop ‘pages’ as one desires.

There is not much out there quite like it at the moment, that’s of course until Chrome OS arrives. If you are still interested though, click the download link and find out for yourself. It’s free, so why not?

Have you tried Jolicloud yet? What are your views on the Ubuntu-Linux and HTML5 based OS?

With Google Chrome’s OS being added to their latest Google netbooks it seems only natural for us to keep on laying down the expectations that we have of their OS and see if they can deliver. Depending success of the OS on the netbooks will perhaps change their overall strategy for the future and maybe see them move onto desktop manufacturing.

Something that I have noticed from some of our previous posts here and here is a number of people wanting to know about Google OS on desktops and what the support would be like. For the Chrome OS to be a success there are some things that we believe it really should have, these are as follows.

Reliability, it must be reliable so that it can compete with the likes of the iPad and Samsung Galaxy S, how often does the software crash on these machines? Virtually never. So for a netbook to have a realistic chance of survival they will have to ensure that the OS I absolutely solid or users will overlook them. We wouldn’t want to see the Google OS get Toyota syndrome now would we?

Geo-Location and remote erase, it would be a fantastic edition if they can add this. I don’t know if any of you have ever had your iPhone stolen or your android handset pinched but if you have, then you will be aware of the capability to find your device and if necessary wipe the data clean off via the web. It wouldn’t be difficult for this to be included when part of Google’s ideas are based around a cloud system.

Apple compatibility, what does the majority of the world use for its music? Apple devices, so somehow Google need to add the functionality of iPod and iPhone synchronization. They should already have Android synchronization available to them but this is an assumption. Head on over to pcmag.com where Michael Muchmore has written an article on more features he would like to see built into the Chrome OS.

If you want to try out the Google Chrome OS then you can head over to the new domain that it sits on by clicking here. Remember it’s a free download so no harm in trying it out.

What do you want to see from the Chrome OS that you feel are a necessity? Let us know in the comments below.

The strangely named Jolicloud Jolibook netbook looks as strange as its name. But looks can be deceiving so how does it perform?

Joanna Stern of Engadget has had a good look at the Linux powered device. The netbook is more aimed for the younger user which explains the design of the lid. The touchpad was found to have some issues with navigating, with the cursor not wanting to cooperate and jumping across the screen. Bluetooth is supported so a mouse was used instead.

It was found the 10.1-inch, 1024 x 600 screen was bright enough for viewing content on Hulu or YouTube. Speakers are what you expect to find on a netbook, being tinny and not very loud. The Jolicloud operating system is ideal for underpowered systems and is a breeze on the netbook, which is powered by a 1.66GHz dual-core Atom N550 processor, and 1GB of RAM.

The processor copes well when playing 720p content, but starts to really struggle with 1080P. Currently priced at £279 ($443), it was found that if you are not worried about having cloud based netbook, you would be better off looking for Windows 7 netbook.

Whoever said that 2010 would be the year of the tablet PC got things a little wrong – yes I know I was one of them. There is no denying that Apple made a success of things with the iPad, but where were all the others? It was thought that netbook sales would suffer, but things have still been going very nicely. One such netbook that will be on your gift wish list has to be the Samsung N150-JPB2.

First impressions always last, so things already look good for the N150 Plus, with its deep red and black glossy lid. However, it will not be long before it becomes a chore wiping off those fingerpriints. There are a number of other colors available, which you can see at Laptop Mag.

Currently Best Buy has a great deal running on the red version of the N150-JPB2, which you can see <a href="http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+-+Netbook+/+Intel%26%23174%3B+Atom%26%23153%3B+Processor+/+10.1%22+Display+/+1GB+Memory+/+250GB+Hard+Drive+-+Red/Black/1264048.p?id=1218245466467&skuId=1264048&st=Cyber_Sale_2010_Computers&cp=1&lp=3"">here. According to the online store, the device comes with a 667MHz Intel Atom processor N450, 1GB of DDR@ RAM, and a 250GB hard drive.

While reading a review of the Samsung netbook on Cnet News, they pointed out that although it had a long lasting battery and a matte screen to stop glare, cramped keyboard and the small hard drive could put a few buyers off.

Christmas is almost upon us, so we thought we would pick out a gift idea for those of you with a daughter. What we have here is the HP 210-2061WM Mini Netbook PC, which is pink in color. I am sure that you will love the slim and small form-factor, so let us take a look at some of the main specs.

It is often hard to explain what specs a netobook has, as many of them are often the same inside, with just a few minor tweaks here and there. The main piece of hardware is the processor, the HP 210-2061WM Mini (a Walmart exclusive) has a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N455 processor, as well as 1GB of RAM – so no system hungry programs people.

Other features include a 250GB hard drive, which is enough to store a huge amount of data, such as photos, music and videos. The 10.1-inch BrightView LED screen also has a built-in webcam, making the netbook ideal for chatting away to friends via video chat.

Connectivity comes in the way of 3 USB ports, 1 VGA, 1 Ethernet port and a muliticard reader. HP has pre-installed Microsoft Windows 7 Starter Edition, and just 60 days of Norton Internet Security 2011. For more details on this netbook visit Walmart. For those looking for a similar spec netbook, then why not try the Acer Aspire One AO532h-2254.

For those of you who felt the urge to upgrade their Netbook from Windows XP to Windows 7 Starter Edition; then you had best think again. The reason why I say this is due to the fact that your small laptop device will suffer from performance issues from the start.

One person found this out the hard way, when Moley from ZDNet felt the need to upgrade his Samsung N150 Plus netbook. He knew right away that he was in for a rough ride because of how long it took to set it up. The reason for this was due to the amount of slow restarts during the install process.

It has been said that running Windows 7 Home Premium on a netbook makes the machine run faster than it would with the Starter edition, which I certainly find strange.

Having said that, the main issue is with the hardware that comes installed on most netbooks. We all know that the standard specs for a netbook is a small hard drive and just 1GB of RAM – not enough to even run Norton’s most of the time. I feel that the Windows 7 Starter Edition would work fine if these computer makers would allow netbooks to evolve much faster, as they have not changed much in the few years that they have been on the market.

Having said that, the smaller version of the laptop looks to be a dying breed with the range of new tablet devices that are about to hit the market.

Do you think that the netbook has had their day?

Netbooks have certainly been popular this year, with recent reports showing a 103 percent increase in sales for 2009. Although this is great news for netbooks, sales in ultra-mobile laptops have fallen. However, will this trend continue in 2010, we fear that they will not?

As we mentioned above, sales of the netbook in 2009 have been strong and this has had an affect on laptops sales. This will be the same for the netbook in 2010, as they will come under intense pressure from Tablet PCs. There are a number of these new devices due for release in 2010, such as the much rumored Apple Tablet.

DisplaySearch who conducted the report believes that growth will still be strong in 2010, but not as much as they were this year as they believe that sales will stabilize. Sales in standard netbooks could fall slightly while sales in higher-end netbooks will continue to grow.

The recently announced more powerful Intel Atom processors and more battery life will be the trend for 2010, but will this be enough to fight of the new contender, the tablet PC?

Although the tablet PC is considered to be a much better alternative to the netbook, the higher price tag could put off a huge amount of consumers. We know that Apple are said to be launching one in the early part of next year, but its estimated $1000 price tag could be the one thing that stops its success.
