With MWC 2011 now over, it is time to see how the global app market will be influenced by all of the announcements. During the event we learned of a number of new devices, not only smartphones and tablets, but news that Nokia and Microsoft were going to pull their resources as well.

Knowing the affects is certainly a tough job, but research2guidance has taken a look at everything of importance, and now believes that they have details on how the app market could be affected. The first major affect has to be that Symbian looks to be dead; yes there will no longer be people using the OS as much. However, they will now be made up of Windows Phone 7 users. We also need to remember that those with a Nokia WP7 device will still have access to the Ovi Store.

The tablet explosion is about to happen, and these devices will have a huge impact on the app market, as there will now be more devices demanding them. We have no idea how Android smartphone apps will work on tablets, and how long it will take the different developers to update them? We can see from the research that more than 15 million iPads have been sold in just 9 months, just imagine how many Android tablets would have sold by this time next year? You then need to multiply that by how many apps will be downloaded on each of these devices as well.

One final thing that could affect the app market is cross platform development, this will become much bigger in the coming years, and is seen as a way to not only save money but also pull each other’s resources in.

Knowing what will have the biggest influence on the app market is too early to know at this stage, but for now it comes down to many of the different factors mentioned above. Which do you think will have the most influence?

This may come as a surprise to some of you but I think the majority of the world’s smartphone users would have expected this news. Best Mobile Device award this year went to Apple’s iPhone 4 at the MWC in Barcelona.

Apple once again did not attend the event as they are well known for being against it. This didn’t seem to affect the popularity with the judges at this event, who said the device ‘set the pace for smartphones.’ The HTC Desire came highly commended.

This news comes from Slashgear who say other device makers can’t have felt good about losing out to a company that didn’t show up. They say the judges describe the iPhone 4 as having a sharp design, great screen, phenomenal ecosystem for app developers and fantastic materials.

Other awards that were up for grabs were the Best Device Manufacturer which went to HTC, who were responsible for last year’s Best Mobile Device and as Apple Insider report, a Best Mobile App award which went to Rovio and co. for Angry Birds. Judges describing the game as ‘catapulting the benchmark for mobile gaming.’

You can see who else won awards at the MWC 2011 by visiting Apple Insider where they also have a list of app award winners for each individual OS platform. Let us know what you think of the results? Do you think Apple deserve their award?

If you have been keeping a close eye on developments at the Mobile World Congress 2011, you’ll probably know that HTC have announced a refresh of some of their most popular handsets. We’ve already told you about two of them, but now we have the first details on the HTC Incredible S handset.

First of all, let’s tell you the nitty gritty hardware specs of the device. The Incredible S will pack a 4-inch Super LCD display with a 1Ghz Qualcomm MSM8255 processor, an 8 megapixel camera with 1.3 megapixel front camera and 768MB of RAM.

To sum up the specs in a few words – they definitely don’t do much in the excitement factor. If you take into consideration that the handset doesn’t even have a dual-core processor, you’ll probably want to close your eyes when we tell you that this handset will ship with Android 2.2 Froyo as well.

Even if this is just a refresh of an existing handset, its still new hardware under a new name – HTC could have done a lot better in our opinion. The Incredible S is expected to release during the second quarter of Q2, let us know if you’re as disappointed as we are with the hardware specs – it’s only because the Droid Incredible is so good, maybe we’re expecting too much.

On a slightly more positive note, check out this rumored, unannounced HTC handset called the ‘Revolver’. It carries specs which would make anyone drool at the mouth.

Mobile World Congress 2011 is now in full swing and for those of you who have missed out on what is new, then all you really need to know is that the iPad has something to worry about now. For too long Apple had its own way, but now the alternatives for the king of the tablets are relentless. Windows 7 based tablet devices have been a little thin on the ground, but that is the complete opposite for Android based systems.

We have now lost count, but we can tell you that the Android OS market gain is going to increase at a much quicker rate than it did in 2010. The worrying thing is, there is nothing to stop it. OK, so we know that the iPad will still sell by the bucket load, but these will slow down in anticipation to the upcoming iPad 2, which should be announced soon – we hope.

However, we have to remember that Apple just has the one device; RIM will also only have one. Microsoft will have a few, but it is Google and their Android based tablet devices that will have the market all sewn up by the end of the year. As you would imagine there is a choice of different Android tablets from all different companies, these range from low, mid and high-end.

Some you might already know are the Motorola Xoom, which has been confusing us on the price. Then there is the recently announced HTC Flyer, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and the LG Optimus Pad, which looks set to have a higher price than the Xoom.

What we do find funny is that it will take a huge number of these tablets to compete with the iPad, and we just do not know how things will be one Apple release their 2nd-geneartion version. We will just have to watch this space.

Do you think that the iPad 2 will be able to stand out against the influx of Google Android OS tablets in 2011?

HTC are in the midst of announcing their lineup of new handsets for MWC 2011, but we have just heard about a secret handset which definitely isn’t on that list. It’s called the HTC Revolver, and it’s apparently due for release on AT&T before the end of 2011.

According to this report by Engadget, an image sent to them by their anonymous tipster reveals a button-less unusual dome shaped handset which is said to be packing Android 3.0 Honeycomb by the time it releases during the third quarter of this year.

Of course this has yet to be confirmed by AT&T, but this tipster has even given a list of initial specs for the device. If the information proves to be legit, the Revolver will come equipped with a 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen, a 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, an 8 megapixel rear camera with a 3 megapixel front camera, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage memory.

This handset is apparently HTC’s flagship handset for 2011, and is backed up by the fact that it runs on Honeycomb, the same operating system which has seemingly only suited for tablet devices. Check out the image over at Engadget and let us know your thoughts on it.

We’ve been keeping an eye on HTC’s MWC 2011 presser and we can definitely confirm that the Revolver isn’t on the list of handsets which have been announced. We’ll be bringing you details on the handsets that have been unveiled soon. Let us know your reaction to this Honeycomb handset. Mouthwatering specs aren’t they?

Update: Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it looks like this handset is a fake.

We recently informed you that Microsoft would be bringing their copy and paste update to Windows Phone 7 devices sometime during March, but now the company has given us much more details, during their presser at Mobile World Congress 2011.

As reported from Engadget, Steve Ballmer announced that not only would WP7 devices be getting copy and paste, but they’ll also receive an update which enables multitasking for third party apps – hows that for a Valentine’s Day treat?

That’s not all either, as Microsoft also confirmed that Internet Explorer 9 for Mobile and Twitter integration is on the way as part of the updates too, and that a release has been scheduled during the first weeks of March.

Perhaps this is Microsoft’s way of saying sorry for the copy and paste delays, as we never expected third party app multitasking to drop so soon, it now means that in just a few weeks time, users will have copy and paste, multitasking, ie9 and Twitter support to play around with. Let’s hope this major update is the first of many to come during the rest of the year.

It now seems logical that this update is the rumored Mango or Apollo updates, which you may remember us telling you about last year. If you have a WP7 device, let us know your thoughts on the upcoming additions. Are you pleased with what you’re getting, or are you still after one specific feature?

You can watch the MWC reveal video below, letting you see a demo of the upcoming features on screen. The video has been shot by the guys over at Unwired View.

You might have guessed by now that 2011 MWC has already started, well early previews from the likes of Samsung and Sony anyway, as they have been showing off their Xperia Play and Galaxy S 2 (II). For those of you attending the event will want to know where what is, so the best way to do this is by downloading the official Mobile World Congress 2011 Guide App.

Looking on the official MWC website we can see that there is a choice of six apps; although not certain if this has been updated much, as it still shows Windows 6 as an option? The app is now live and ready to be downloaded, and offers details such as exhibitor listing floor plans and even contact details for exhibitor.

More details on this can be found here, once you view this on your mobile web browser then you will be able to download to your device. This app is still so much more than all of the above though, as you will have all the details on what keynotes will be taking place. There will be so much choice to do during the event, as over 1,300 companies will be participating.

If you have an Android device, then we have found this map of Barcelona MWC, which you can view offline. This app, which you can download from here comes pre-loaded with the map of Barcelona and has been updated to the 2011 version – not that much would have changed in a year.

We hope that these apps are all you need to have a great 2011 MWC?

This week has seen a few leaks in the mobile industry, which just happens to be right before Mobile World Congress. The biggest of these leaks was the Samsung Galaxy S2 specs, and today we have some more details for you.

To recap on the Galaxy S 2 specs, the device includes a 2-megapixel front facing camera and 8-megapixel rear camera, which can shoot 1080p video. Other features include an impressive 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, and WVGA Super AMOLED screen at 4.3-inches.

Thanks to Samsung Hub, you can see a gallery of photos for the Samsung Galaxy S2 and 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab 2. Samsung apparently decided that they should show the official photos of both devices, just one day after the leak. Check out this article for a gallery that was released today.

Computer World has taken a closer look at Samsung’s Galaxy S II, and focused on the specs that make this device special. These include the dual-core processor, 8.49mm thickness, and Bluetooth 3.0 + HS. We’re still waiting for the price and release date, although we do know that May should be the shipping month.

Trusted Reviews makes a good point when they ask if anything is left for MWC 2011? They list what we know so far, and while that is a lot, expect more to come over the next few days.

It’s that time of year again, and Mobile World Congress 2011 is just starting to kick-off in Barcelona with more focus on gaming than any year before. We have looked at alternatives to the upcoming iPhone 5 before, but with the show starting we’re seeing some real challenges to Apple’s app empire.

New gaming capabilities will be shown at MWC, with some brands and mobile manufactures aiming for the hardcore gamer with better graphics, and hardware. The PlayStation Phone has given the developer just what they need to create the next generation of mobile games.

You can see a video below that shows an exclusive look at Guitar Hero from Glu Mobile, which is running on the new Xperia Play (also known as the PlayStation phone). The video is thanks to Gamer Live, and shows a behind the scenes look at this Android 3.0 Smartphone.

You can see another video in this article that shows Peter Farago from research firm Flurry, and he explains the buzz around Windows Phone 7, the new Nokia and Microsoft partnership, and looks at how developers are showing that they are willing to develop for multi-platforms, even with the extra costs involved.

What news are you looking for from the Mobile World Congress? Will these new mobile gaming advancements change the way you game?
