Many years ago the idea of file sharing was considered ok by a huge portion of the online community, but how times have changed. This practice of illegal downloading is frowned upon by not only record companies, but by the artist as well. So when news like Jammie Thomas-Rasset getting fined $1.5 million for illegal downloads, they feel that this shows a good message.

That fine was for 24 songs, so that works out that she paid $62,500 per song – not so free after all. I wonder if she regrets taking the lawsuit imposed by Recording Industry Association of America to a jury trial? This is not the first lawsuit of its kind, but not sure if we will see anymore.

Thomas-Rasset should consider herself lucky; she could have been fined up to $150,000 per track, which she downloaded from Kazaa. As expected, she will be appealing the fine, but do you think that she stands a chance of winning that appeal?

The Recording Industry Association of America will not continue to hunt down every file sharer downloader, but they have shown their teeth. Do you agree with this fine? Where do you stand on file sharing? More details on Boston Herald.

How many times have you previewed a song on iTunes, only to find that it ends just as the artist starts to sing? It is no secret that the 30 second preview is a bit short, and we had assumed that Apple were thinking of extending this to 60 seconds – so was surprised to learn that the preview will soon be 90 seconds long.

This only applies to songs that are longer than 2 minutes and 30 seconds long, those under that will stay at 30 seconds. There are certainly a few benefits to this extension, such as the user being able to listen to more of a song before they purchase. This could have a positive affect on record labels, as they could sell more copies of a certain track.

According to an article on MacRumors, it states that those record labels that do not consent to this change will have to withdraw from iTunes. I do not think that there will be many pulling out, do you? We are not certain when this change will take place, but it should be soon.

Do you believe that this is a good move on Apple’s part? Who will benefit most from this preview extension?

Back in May we reported that LimeWire has lost a copyright case, we now have news that they have been told to stop sharing files. The P2P company was told to do so immediately and permanently by an New York federal judge.

LimeWire were told to inform all of their users, the courts said that they would need to report back in 14 days. Once that time is over they will have to prove to the courts on what steps they have taken to shut the free music download side of things.

Jaikumar Vijayan from Computerworld reports that a spokeswoman from LimeWire said that this only means that the distributing or supporting of its P2P software part of the company will be affected. This does not have an affect on their plans to offer a subscription based music service.

A few of my friends have always made fun of me because I support the recording industry by always downloading direct from iTunes. It seems that people have a hard time accepting that using services like P2P is a form a stealing. If this sort of thing was stamped out altogether – then maybe prices could start to come down?

What are your thoughts on this latest LimeWire outcome?
