Back in the early part of the 1900s a game was invented, this game was called Battleship, but was not patented until 1931. The game was seen as one of the best strategy games for some time. Back in the early days you played by using pencil and paper, this later evolved into a number of different variations. So who would have thought that in 2012 a movie would be released?

The movie trailer seems to have picked up a bit of interest, as it has since gone viral (other videos that went viral). The reason for this is because fans of the Battleship games will be interested to see how the filmmakers have been able to make the transition. We never review movies on here, but we do find it intriguing when movies like this come along. More often than not when a movie is based on a game, things turn out pretty bad, so why should it be any different this times round – although they were video games?

Not trying to go too much into things, we just want to say we should give the movie a chance. There are a few reasons why this could be a box office hit, the first is Rihanna, and the second Liam Neeson. The singer will draw in a huge crowd just because of her fanbase, and Neeson will have his very own following for different reasons. The director and producers behind the movie are not stupid, they have found the perfect balance, beauty and pure acting talent – no need to point out who has what.

As you would expect there has been a huge social reaction to the Hasbro game being made into a movie. ShockYa scowled through Twitter and found three great tweets, the first said, “Better than expected? First trailer for Battleship.” The second was “This is exactly what I always envisioned when I was playing the board game, exactly.” The third “Wait, there are aliens in BATTLESHIP? The giant naval power we’re using ships to battle is extraterrestrial? Did they not fly here?”

It is that final tweet that we found interesting, as she has a point. However, we have come to expect that humans will always prevail, unless you watched the final episode of the new series V that is.

To get you in the mood before the movie hits theaters next summer why not have a game of Battleships online. This is a long way from the paper and pencil version. The first step is to select a ship, then use the arrow keys to turn your ship, then finally select a position to deploy your ship. Have fun, but much better if you are able to play with a friend.

We all have our own take on Sci-Fi movies, TV shows and the topic of UFO’s in general. Some people live with partners that just have to put up with their obsession of everything science fiction, with comments like “they’re just puppets” not going down too well with the fan.

Today we wanted to cater for those that love the best alien movies of all time and want to read about alien encounters, if you own an iPhone or any other iOS device then the amount of apps that can feed your desire for information is almost endless. We have hunted down a few apps that celebrate all that is aliens, but feel free to mention your favorites in the comments below.

One of the first apps that caught my eye was “Best Movie Quotes”, which includes some of the most popular quotes from many movies, including the alien verity. From Star Trek’s famous lines like “Beam me up, Scotty” to when Luke Skywalker found out who his real dad was, this app found on iTunes will give you multiple personalities.

Sci-Fi Movies Unlimited goes a step further by giving you a lot for the small price of under a dollar, which includes ten of the best classic sci-fi movies of all time. These alien movies include Phantom From Space, The Phantom Planet, Teenagers from Outer Space, and seven more. Another similar app is called “Bad Movies”, and this app gives you some free bad movies that just happen to include a lot of alien movies. Why you would want bad movies is crazy, although we guess these classics are not bad to everyone. You can also watch free alien movies on your iPad and iPhone with an app called “Crackle”, which this time includes a few newer movies including MEN IN BLACK.

How well do you think you know the best alien movies and rumors about close encounters? There is an app to test you called “Aliens, Monsters & UFOs Trivia Quiz”. As the title suggests, this application will give you 9 different game modes to test your knowledge of aliens and UFO’s. It has been stated that over the past 60-years more than 150 million people around the world have witnessed a UFO sighting, and one app that wants to help you report what you find is called “Report a UFO”. This iOS app will help connect what you report with a number of databases held by organizations and volunteers. If you love aliens so much, you could just turn yourself into one with “Alien Booth“.

Feel free to try the above apps and let us know what your favorite alien movies are? Have you had a close encounter? We also embed the movie trailer below for the upcoming blockbuster “Cowboys and Aliens”, which looks pretty good to us. There is a few alien gaming apps on the iTunes store (like Cows vs Aliens) that may pick up a few downloads with the popularity of this movie.

Have you ever wondered what the worst movies of all time are? Well now you can check which movies have been named and shamed straight from your pocket, with an excellent Razzies application we’ve found for the iPhone and other iOS devices.

For those of you who don’t know, the Razzies is an official Hollywood awards ceremony in the US which recognises the worst movies of all time, handing out awards to the worst director, actors, worst supporting actors and so on.

The good news, is that there’s an iOS app available for the Razzies and it’s essentially a mini encyclopedia of all the worst movies in history. It’s free to download and you can select your decade of choice and then sit back and enjoy the actors which have been shamed by the judges. For example, most recently at the 31st Razzies Ceremony, Ashton Kutcher took home the award for Worst Actor for Valentine’s Day, while amusingly, the entire cast of Sex and the City 2 won the award for Worst Ensemble.

Download the app for yourself now and let us know what you think of it. In your opinion, what do you think the worst movie of all time is? Paris Hilton might get a few votes, while the great man himself Eddie Murphy may be on your list too for some of the films he’s done – Trading Places is a classic though.

A hugely popular application which lets users enjoy their XviD movie or TV series has recently been updated. CineXPlayer 1.6 is available for owners of the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

Released by NXP Software the app has a great easy to use interface, and gives users the ability to play their videos in iOS without any need to convert them. The update has seen the interface unclutterd, and video support has been vastly improved. Users have complete control over the playback, and can even lock rotation for watching in bed.

A single tap will return you back to your library, and there is a great resume option which allows for watching a movie from the place where it was stopped. Anyone using iTunes built-in file sharing option can drag and drop AVI or DivX files straight to the device. CineXplayer has also received many positive reviews from users.

For owners of the iPad the app costs $2.99. iOS 4.0 or later required.

Towards the end of 2009 we first heard about a new movie rental service from Google, which would see Google offer Pay Per View (PPV) movies via YouTube. At the time rumors were trickling out about discussions with Time Warner, Sony, Lions Gate, and other major movie studios.

At the start of this year more details were released, and in April YouTube released a free movie service that can be seen at youtube.com/movies. One year on from the first rumors we heard, it now looks that a Google PPV movie service will be released within weeks.

According to the Financial Times, the negotiations with movie studios have progressed to the point that a global pay-per-view movie service could launch within 4 months, starting with the United States.

Google is in a very good position, they do not need to sell the YouTube brand, it sells itself, and the number of users that Google can attract to any new service via its search engine is second to none.

It’s interesting that Apple has a special press event on September 1, which will likely include improvements to their Apple TV service. 2010/2011 will be a battle for control of digital distribution in the television and movie industries.

Would you use a PPV YouTube movie service?
