Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX owners are probably wondering where their official update to Android Ice Cream Sandwich has got to. After originally being scheduled for a release in April, the update is still unavailable.

While that is obviously pretty disappointing for owners of those devices, Motorola has come out and attempted to provide a little relief on the situation, as well as provide clarity regarding updates for their other Android handsets.

The good news is that the RAZR and RAZR MAXX are still penciled in for an ICS update sometime during Q2 of 2012. The bad news is that a list provided by the manufacturer names and shames specific devices which will not be receiving an update to the latest version of Android.

Despite being released last Summer, we can confirm that the Droid X2 won’t be getting an update. Also on the doomed Gingerbread-only list is the Motorola Droid 3 and also the Motorola Milestone 3. If you are still using one of these three handsets, it’s probably a good idea to start thinking of a new phone to purchase, or contemplate installing a custom version of Android instead.

Aside from the RAZR and RAZR MAXX, Motorola also reiterate that the Droid Bionic and the Droid 4 are still in line to receive their updates sometime during the third quarter of 2012. No specific months unfortunately, but this list is obviously better than complete silence which other manufacturers and of course certain carriers are well guilty of doing.

If you have time to spare, check out the full upgrade chart over at the official forums. What Motorola device are using at the moment – are you reading good news or bad news?

If you are a fan of picking up smartphones with a distinct outlook compared to the traditional variants seen in retail stores and online, we may have some news of interest to you. It has been revealed that Motorola are planning to unleash a rather slick looking blue version of their Droid RAZR smartphone.

To just point out, this has not been made official by either Motorola or Verizon yet. However, images have appeared online recently showing the new blue model in all its glory and as far as different colored smartphones go outside of the regular black and white colors – it actually looks very nice.

The pictures can be seen over at Android Central here, as it comes accompanied with a Verizon database leak which also reveals a potential release date. If the information is correct we could be seeing this handset become available as soon as May 17th. Aside from the color change, there doesn’t appear to be any other hardware or software differences to the standard versions, which means that you’ll still be getting a 1780mAh battery and Android Gingerbread OS.

Speaking of software, the fact that Motorola has seemingly focused on getting a new version of the Droid RAZR out, rather than deliver on their promised Ice Cream Sandwich update may be cause of considerable frustration for current Droid RAZR owners. The update was meant to happen last month, but it never did and consumers are still waiting as of now – officially that is.

For those who are looking for a new handset though, this blue Droid RAZR is certainly an attractive proposition. Take a look at the images for yourself and let us know your thoughts on it. Would you consider buying this or is blue an unusual color for you? After seeing Samsung unveil the Pebble Blue Galaxy S III, is blue the new white for 2012?

For those of you that were interested in the Droid RAZR MAXX but decided against picking one up, we may have some news that will be of interest to you. The next rumored smartphone to join the growing Droid family is thought to be called the Droid Fighter and some new information has revealed that it could be packing an amazing battery.

If this is the first time you have heard about the device, let us fill you in with the important details. The Droid Fighter is thought to be packing Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, making it Motorola’s very first ICS device. Other specs include a 4.6-inch display screen which is meant to be 720p HD quality and on-screen touch buttons, essentially making it a lot like the RAZR MAXX.

In a way, this handset will perhaps end up being the smartphone that should have really been the RAZR MAXX from the start if that makes sense. The RAZR MAXX doesn’t have an HD screen nor does it come with Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, but what the two handsets will share is superior battery life.

The RAZR MAXX comes with that currently unrivaled 3300 mAh battery, but information posted on a Hong Kong forum reveals that the Droid Fighter may be the next Verizon arrival with a 3300 mAh battery as well. It will also be another 4G LTE compatible device and could even be landing on April 12 if this leak by Droid-Life is correct.

As we mentioned at the start, this handset should be ideal for those that missed out on the RAZR MAXX, but if you do own that handset, there doesn’t appear to be too many reasons to upgrade to this one. Motorola seems to be churning out these Droid variants by the month, but really they need to be working on a quad-core Droid smartphone next – let’s hope they are.

Have you been keeping an eye on the Droid Fighter? Let us know if you are waiting for this one, or if you agree with us that Motorola needs to cut down on the average spec phones and really deliver something truly next-gen, like the Samsung Galaxy S III which looks very likely to be equipped with a quad-core Exynos chip.

Earlier this week we revealed to you the list of Verizon smartphones that will definitely be guaranteed an update to the latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich. As expected though, there were some noticeable omissions from that list with the stand out phone being the popular Motorola Droid X.

For a phone that first launched in 2010, it appears that Verizon and Motorola are now preparing to stop all support for the device, officially that is. We’ve noticed that the Droid 3 is also mysteriously absent from the update list, which is a little bit strange given that they have no problems bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to the legendary HTC Thunderbolt which launched almost a year ago exactly.

You just know that the decision isn’t going to go down well with Droid X owners, and we’ve even read some feedback on Twitter from many users who say that this now basically condones the use of rooting the device in search of an unofficial update. That’s the reality Droid X owners are facing now as it is going to be the only way you ever see Android 4.0 on your device sadly.

What about the LG Revolution as well? Verizon seems to have taken care of their other 4G LTE supported devices, but it appears that there has been no love shown for the LG Revolution, a device which is only a year old. Perhaps LG and Motorola will have a change of heart and extend the Ice Cream Sandwich update rollout to the Droid X and LG Revolution as well.

If you own either of these devices, let us know how your feeling. Are you now prepared to root?

The Android platform is being treated to a selection of great handsets recently, which doesn’t show any signs of slowing in the near future. Rumors of the Samsung Galaxy 3 release have been doing the rounds in recent weeks, and how Samsung will improve on the current version. Today we have news of a rumored Motorola Atrix 3, which has been described as the RAZR MAXX on steroids.

At last year’s Consumer Electronics Motorola introduced their first dual-core smartphone before updating it ten months later. The Atrix 2 brought with it a bigger display with a better camera, but the device went pretty much unnoticed as only one month later the company revealed the RAZR. The Atrix 2 and RAZR were basically the same except the RAZR has a nicer and slimmer form factor.

Now it seems the Atrix 3 has been leaked and according to Intomobile it is thought to come packing the quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor. Other claimed features include a 4.3-inch display with 1280 x 720 HD resolution, 2GB of RAM, ten megapixel camera, and a 3,300 mAh battery. The device looks similar to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus from the leaked images that can be seen via the link.

It is thought to feature Android Ice Cream Sandwich but it’s not known when the device will be available or how much it will cost. More will hopefully be known later this month at the Mobile World Congress event.

The rumored device will face some stiff competition from the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X that are all believed to be using the Nvidia Tegra 3 processor. The Apple iPhone 5 may also be on the horizon by then to crowd the market even more. Then later in the year Microsoft will be releasing its next operating system, Windows Phone 8.

Smartphone fans are certainly going to have a great choice when choosing a new handset this year, which can only be a good thing. Do you like the sound of the Atrix 3?

Last week we gave you what could be the release date for the new Android operating system landing on a couple of Samsung Galaxy devices. Today it is the turn of another manufacturer Motorola as it updates its Android ICS roadmap, but you may have to prepare to wait a while for it to arrive though.

Owners of the Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi version in the US have already been receiving the updated software, but according to the new schedule the company has revealed the ICS update won’t be reaching other tablets and smartphones in the country until sometime during Q3.

As The Verge are reporting only the Atrix 2, Atrix 4G, Photon 4G, and the Xoom Family Edition along with the Verizon Xyboard 8.2 and 10.1 have estimated release dates.

The Xoom Family Edition has a slightly earlier release estimate with a Q2 timeframe. Devices that have been confirmed to be getting the update but unfortunately without a set release date include the Droid RAZR, Droid RAZR MAXX, Droid Bionic, Droid 4, Motorola Electrify, and the two Xyboards from Verizon.

There are a number of devices currently going under the first stages of development, evaluation and planning. Many of these are Verizon devices so it makes you wonder if the carrier has something to do with the delay. The vague schedules for some of the Motorola schedule have “further details to follow” listed next to them, which suggests the updates may not arrive until the summer or even later.

Previously the company has blamed Google for the delay in getting Android 4.0 out to its devices and having to wait for the Galaxy Nexus to be shipped, but surely this can’t be the reason for a delay lasting several months. By the time many of these handsets get ICS Google would have already announced its replacement by then.

Owners of the Droid Bionic 4G with have to just make do with the unofficial update we have already told you about. For the full roadmap click here. Are you disappointed in the time it is taking to get the update rolled out to Motorola devices?

Back in October of last year, we told you that the Droid Bionic was on the list to receive an official update to Ice Cream Sandwich. It hasn’t happened yet though, but for all those of you who are getting impatient, you may be interested to hear that there is a new stable custom ROM available to download.

The Bionic may be deemed an old Android device now with the likes of the Droid RAZR, RAZR MAXX and the Droid 4 carrying the flag for Motorola, but try telling that to loyal Bionic owners who are more than happy with the functionality offered in their device.

The one feature that most Bionic owners crave for though is Ice Cream Sandwich and considering that it has been almost six months of waiting, it doesn’t look like Motorola are prepared to release their official update any day soon. This has prompted a lot of you to try your hand at a few custom ROMS via a rooted handset and earlier this week, we heard that a brand new version is available to try out.

Older Ice Cream Sandwich builds for the Droid Bionic lacked the support for 4G LTE data, but you’ll be happy to hear that the latest update rectifies this. According to a report from Droid-Life, this is actually due to Motorola’s recent official firmware update for the Bionic, and of course the clever people at DroidModderX for fiddling with that update and emerging with an all new Ice Cream Sandwich build.

It looks like this is the most stable version yet, with the only notable feature not working so far being the camera application. Everything else works fine though, so you should head over to this link for the download and installation notes if you want to try this out. One word of caution though, you’ll need to be running the latest Droid Bionic firmware which is 5.9.902 otherwise this won’t work. If you want to study this build in finer detail, there’s also a full changelog up at the link above to read through as well.

If you have a Bionic and are willing to give this a try, let us know how you get on. Who needs the latest smartphone when great custom updates like this become available? Having said that, it would still be nice for Motorola to show some love to those who insist on waiting for the official update.

If you have decided that the Motorola Droid 4 is your next smartphone and you’re planning to pick one up at launch this week, it’s a good idea to read or in this case watch as much intel as possible so you’re up to speed on the capabilities that the Droid 4 has to offer.

Motorola has just unleashed a barrage of videos giving consumers the perfect opportunity for a detailed insight into the Droid 4 before the handset launches over the weekend. A range of aspects are covered in the tutorial style videos, such as the design of the device which takes a look at that slick 5-row backlit QWERTY slider, to the Smart Actions app from Motorola which allows you to customize your device in order to suit your daily lifestyle, but more importantly disable apps that you don’t need and free up that precious battery life.

If camera quality is important to you, then you’ll want to check out the video below which specifically takes a look at the 8 megapixel camera and a handy little addition to video recording which reduces hand shaking when capturing video. There’s also a demonstration on how to share videos instantly once you’ve taken a clip, including the ability to send 1080p videos directly to YouTube – a feature that will probably be very welcome with new owners.

Moving on, there are also videos which show how the Motorola Droid can be hooked up to the Lapdock 500 accessory for situations when you want to transfer any data from phone to laptop, or edit documents and other media on a big screen. There’s even support for taking calls as well when it is hooked up to the laptop which is particularly impressive.

As with older Droid devices, no accessory is probably more important than the official car dock, and one final video that we have to show you gives you an example of the functionality and interface you can expect to see when you hook your Droid 4 to your motor. What we like about this, is the car dock gives you a slick new interface which is tailored just for in-car purposes. Aside from the navigation features, there is voice-operated calling, and the music feature even allows you to use your data to access internet radio stations.

The Galaxy Nexus may be the device to own on Verizon at the moment since it offers Ice Cream Sandwich, but the Droid 4 is looking like a great addition to the Droid family and it will become even better once someone ports ICS. Let us know what features impress you the most on the Droid 4.

One of the biggest criticisms for the Android platform remains the speed that updates to the operating system are rolled out to consumer’s handsets. Only yesterday we told you about HTC updating their roadmap for their ICS upgrade plans. Now it has been claimed that hardware is to blame for the slow ICS rollout.

According to a top Motorola executive it’s not individual company’s software customizations holding up the software upgrades. According to a report on PC Mag Motorola’s Christy Wyatt blames the hardware for the delay in getting the update out. The problem is being blamed on writing code for handsets besides the Google Nexus model.

Wyatt said that when Google releases the software “they do a version of the software for whatever phone they just shipped”, and by the time the rest of the platform sees it multiple devices and carriers have to get the software onto their devices and networks.

Motorola realizes that its customers would like to see the Android updates earlier, but the process in providing it is complicated. According to Wyatt first there is the hardware support, and then the software has to be adapted with the custom software that manufacturers use. After all this the handsets themselves have to be re-certified by the carriers themselves, which all adds to the time it takes.

Wyatt said that the Windows Phone platform only supports one chipset, which makes upgrades much easier, but Motorola has no plans to join the platform. In the meantime Sony has confirmed that it will be upgrading a number of handsets to Android ICS, but the company has less chipsets and carriers to deal with compared to Motorola.

Motorola would be hoping to get earlier access to the Android software once it has been taken over by Google, but Google has previously stated that Motorola will remain a separate business with the platform remaining open to all.

Rival companies may still be a little concerned that Motorola will receive favorable treatment with regards to Android software though. But the situation can cause frustration to users as some are still waiting to receive the Android Gingerbread update.

Do you get annoyed waiting for the software upgrades or are you happy with the version you are already using?

While there is plenty of release speculation on the Motorola Droid 4 smartphone, there is still no official word from Verizon on when the device will be available to buy online and through retail stores. We have the perfect antidote for your frustration though, as it looks like the first video review has become available, giving you an essential preview of the device up close.

We’re not sure how the guys over at Wirefly have managed such an intimate moment with the Droid 4, but we’re just glad that they have wasted no time in putting a video review online, regardless of any media embargos that are probably set in place by both Verizon and Motorola.

We get a chance to see how Motorola’s first 4G LTE slider compares alongside the Droid 3, as well as an in-depth look at how the 8 megapixel camera and video camera perform. Judging by some of the samples shown in the video, you’ll be able to shoot photos with a decent level of quality, but it’s definitely nothing on the amazing side and if you watch the video yourself you’ll probably agree.

The slide-out 5-row QWERTY is the main highlight for many consumers and of course, the 4G LTE support. On one example of a live speedtest, the Droid 4 brought up a download speed of 7.9MB which was pretty good, and there’s also some benchmark tests towards the end of the video which you may want to check out as well.

Will the lack of Ice Cream Sandwich on board put you off from getting this device though? The Droid 4 is likely to ship with Android 2.3.5 as highlight in the video, but you shouldn’t be too concerned about this as we’re willing to bet that a custom version of Ice Cream Sandwich will become available before Motorola and Verizon release an official update.

This video provides an excellent preview of the device and is essential viewing if you are planning to pick it up on contract with Verizon. Is the Droid 4 still your number one priority or are you now less than convinced after seeing this review?
