While all the Android news lately has been about the next version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, there are many owners of Android handsets that haven’t even upgraded to Gingerbread yet. Today we can tell you that the Motorola Atrix Android UK Gingerbread update is finally confirmed.

Users in the UK were promised the update earlier in the year with a roll-out alongside the US, but then saw months of delays. Now Electricpig are reporting that owners of the Atrix will finally get the Gingerbread update during the middle part of next month.

Motorola UK have confirmed the news, and owners of unlocked devices will be the first to get the update. It is not currently known if users of the handset on T-Mobile or Orange will see any further delay with the software update. US users saw the update bring added support for video chat in Google Talk among other things.

The UK version of the handset was released back in June, and was one of the most powerful handsets available at the time. Motorola did fall fail of advertising watchdogs though with some of its claims about the device. Motorola have never said why the UK update was delayed, but some feel it had problems with the Motoblur software that sits alongside Android.

There will be many users hoping their device eventually gets Ice Cream Sandwich, especially after Motorola Tweeted many of its handsets will get within six weeks of the software being released. Have you been frustrated waiting for the Gingerbread update?

Now that the Droid Bionic (which has some issues) is now out in the open it’s time for another handset to start taking the headlines, and we are not talking...

Now that the Droid Bionic (which has some issues) is now out in the open it’s time for another handset to start taking the headlines, and we are not talking about the iPhone 5. The phone in question is the Motorola Atrix 2, and looking at the specs there is one big feature missing, LTE. It seems as though AT&T has decided to leave 4G technology out of this release, but you never know what could be lurking around the corner.

The current model has a dual-core processor, but the successor will have either a 1.2 or 1.5GHz chip. This seems the CPU of choice for future Android handsets, as the upgraded Galaxy S II is also said to be getting it. The lack of LTE could be an issue here, as more handsets will start to use the technology, which could have a series affect on the popularity of the Atrix 2.

According to BGR the upcoming handset from Motorola will be running Android 2.3.5, but were unable to give us any sort of release date. However, we do expect the phone maker to share some details with us soon, but for now we will just have to look at the leaked photos and then speculate some of the other features. Having said that, we do suspect that the Atrix will be packing an 8-megapixel camera, which is beginning to be the camera of choice these days.

While looking at the photos the new handset has a speaker hole a little like the one on the Photon 4G, as well as the camera being very much like the Droid Bionic. This is not really surprising, as the two are almost the same handset, well apart from being on different carriers that is. There will be those of you who will say that these photos might not be the real deal, but from what we see they look genuine to us.

Back in March we announced that the Motorola Atrix smartphone would be arriving on T-Mobile UK sometime in June, although we unfortunately couldn’t provide a specific date. However, we can now tell you that the handset has come to T-Mobile UK, and the contract price has been revealed.

As Kate Solomon over at techradar.com recently noted, T-Mobile UK will be offering the Motorola Atrix smartphone for free, but only if you sign up to a £35.75 a month two-year contract. This will provide you with a 500MB date allowance, 500 text messages and 900 minutes.

If you don’t mind upping your monthly payment to £40.85 (or above) per month for a period of 24 months, you can pick up the ‘Work and Play’ kit. This will provide you with the Motorola HD media dock with an HDMI port and 3 USB ports, plus a mouse, a keyboard and a remote control.

The ‘Work and Play’ kit costs £129 when purchased separately. The higher priced contract will give you a 500MB data allowance, 1200 minutes and 500 texts per month. T-Mobile will also be stocking the Lapdock for £299. The lapdock comes with an 11.6-inch screen and around eight hours battery life.

Are you thinking of buying the Motorola Atrix smartphone?

We have some important news for Motorola Atrix 4G users on AT&T now, especially those who have been having one or two problems relating to mobile banking on the device. Motorola has now issued a statement on the issue, saying that a fix is now available which will solve the problem.

For those of you that are unaware, mobile banking problems first started occuring with the 4.1.83 update for Motorola Atrix. This update caused several compatibility issues with the Atrix and various mobile banking apps and websites, which is obviously a bit worrying for those of you who regularly organise your finances on your trusted Atrix.

Thankfully though, we’re pleased to say a fix is now available, as reported from Phandroid. You’ll need to go to the Android Market, and download the Atrix Certificate Updater. Once you have it, follow the included instructions and you’ll should see that mobile banking is now working as intended on the device.

Try it out now and let us know how you get on. If you are still having problems with his, or indeed any other issues on the Atrix, get in touch with us below. Do you use mobile banking on your Android device?

The Motorola ATRIX is more widely known as the fingerprint phone, as the handset uses bio-metric fingerprint technology to increase security if it gets stolen. The smartphone has been available in the U.S. for some time, but now consumers in the UK can now get their hands on the device through the Orange network.

The only way that the phone can be unlocked is by your fingerprint, so you will need to swipe your finger across the reader – how awesome is that? OK, this feature has been used on computers for some time now, but it makes more sense to have it on a device that stands more chance of getting stolen.

The Motorola ATRIX has some impressive hardware to match, such as a 1 GHz dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, 5-megapixel camera, HD video, 4-inch touchscreen display, HD TV, 16GB of storage and much more. On launch the ATRIX will come with Android Froyo, but will not be long until upgraded to Gingerbread 2.3.

As with all handsets on the Orange UK network there are a number of monthly price plans to choose, the more you pay each month, the cheaper the handset will be. The price ranges are FREE, £49.99, £99.99 and £149.99. For more details visit Orange UK.

Will you be buying the Motorola ATRIX for the specs or the bio-metric fingerprint technology?

We have a bit of good news now for those of you that live in the UK and are thinking of getting the upcoming Motorola Atrix smartphone, as we’ve just receieved word that the much-awaited Android 2.2 run handset is arriving on T-Mobile UK sometime in June this year.

As Simon D. Thomas over on the 3g.co.uk website reported, the Motorola Atrix – which is powered by a NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor running at 1GHz and comes with 1GB of RAM – has recently appeared on the “Coming Soon” page of T-Mobile’s website.

The Motorola Atrix also features 16GB onboard memory, a 4-inch touch screen display with a resolution of 540 x 960, Bluetooth and DLNA support, a HDMI output and a 5-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash. It also comes with a front-facing VGA camera for video chat.

Although the Atrix will be running Android 2.2 Froyo on release, it will be able to be updated to the latest version of the Android opearting system after it’s launched. A main selling point for the Atrix is the docks that will be available for the smartphone.

As Peter Chubb mentioned in a previous post, there will be a laptop dock available, which will transform the device from a Smartphone to a Smartbook. Other docks that will be available include a multimedia dock that enables you to stream to your HDTV and a charging dock that’s also an alarm.

There’s no word on a UK price as of yet, but we’ll keep you updated when we know more. Are you thinking of buying the Motorola Atrix?

We have some exciting news for those of you planning to pick up the dual-core equipped Motorola Atrix smartphone on release, as it looks as if online retailer Amazon may have revealed pricing a little prematurely.

If you didn’t know already, Motorola are calling this handset the ‘most powerful smartphone in the world’ and with a dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 processor at the helm, it’s certainly going to pack a few punches. Other key specs include a 4-inch capacitive gorilla glass touchscreen, a 5 megapixel camera with 720p video recording, 16GB of internal memory and Android OS 2.2 Froyo running with Motoblur UI.

As reported from Engadget, Amazon recently posted pricing details for the handset, before quickly removing them once they caught on to it. Luckily for you, we have the details before they were pulled. The Atrix will be on sale ( Amazon at least) for $150 on contract, or $599.99 if you choose to go down the off-contract route.

Further details also revealed that the handset will be launching on February 11th, which isn’t long at all if this information turns out to be true. What are your thoughts on the leaked information, we feel the $150 contract price is very reasonable for a dual-core Tegra 2 handset.

However, we’re a bit disappointed that this handset won’t be coming with Android 2.3 Gingerbread at least. How long are manufacturers going to release new handsets in 2011 with Froyo – it definitely needs to end somewhere. You may be a bit frustrated that the handset wont come with a better camera sensor than 5 megapixels too.

Give us your opinions on the handset so far – will you be getting one?

Today people generally have a laptop for their computer usage and a smartphone for on-the-go communications, however Motorola are really mixing things up with the Motorola Atrix, which is a smartphone which is dockable to make it a cloud computer.

As you can probably tell by the opening paragraph it is quite hard to explain this product as it is completely unique, so much so that BetaNews.com suggest that it may well be a contender for the the best announcement at CES 2011.

You can see a video showing exactly what the Motorola Atrix is capable of at the end of this post, the video clearly shows a dockable smartphone which can dock into a mobile computer, television or desktop PC, once docked you can see a webtop interface which also shows your smartphone’s display (virtually), which should mean that you have full access to your smartphone even if it is docked.

The Atrix runs Android, however it utilizes a Mozilla-based webtop OS when it is docked, the video at the end of this post shows a thin and light netbook-like mobile computer. BetaNews raise the point that the Atrix is not defined by the screen it is built into and can be docked to suit a user’s needs wherever they are, on the bus, at home or in an Internet cafe.

You can see PCWorld’s hands-on time with the Motorola Atrix here, it shows the HD Dock being used to connect the Atrix to a large HDTV, once docked you can control your smartphone, run mobile apps, experience a richer web experience and even send text message using a keyboard and mouse, it looks great!

We would love to hear what you thought about the Motorola Atrix 4G’s dockability (if thats not a word it should be) and the overall concept, do you think that a dockable smartphone will become a serious alternative to a desktop computer / laptop in the future?
