KDDI prototype cell phones designed by Hideo Kanbara

KDDI, who is the second largest mobile phone carrier in Japan, have been showing a range of prototype cell phones, designed by Hideo Kanbara. Looking at some of the images, I have to say that these phones do not have much to offer.

The phones come with a built-in-projector and a game controller. The phones do look good when viewing on the Web, but Crunch Gear was at the Ply Exhibition, and they were left a bit disappointed.

We have to remember that the cell phones are just a concept, so the actual phones will be different to the ones on show. Check out more pictures of these KDDI prototype cell phones.

When it comes to searching for the information you want, most people like to see results quickly and simply. Google has always been known for their “keeping it simple” approach to search and their new Olympics mobile search tool is no different.

Google aims to give you Olympics results fast with new its new tool that helps you track down Olympics results quickly on your mobile phones.

They have also setup a mobile website designed for those that are following the Olympics. All you need is an Internet-capable mobile phone to view these specific Olympic-based tools.

If you want to browse all the events, then you can by going to google.com/m/summergames on a mobile phone. We had a look and saw sports we did not even know were in the Olympic games.

Google’s mobile Olympic site not only shows all the events and results, but it is apparently available to 60 different countries and 36 languages. Google has kept search simple yet again.

O2 offers ‘free’ home broadband for UK customers

August 3, 2008 by Alan

Mobile operators O2 has announced a new deal that will offer customers free ‘up to’ 8mb home broadband for a year when they purchase their £20 a month mobile broadband package.
O2 were keen to point out that this new deal is the first one of its kind to “offer customers high-speed internet access inside the home and on the move” in a combined package.

The deal went live on the 1st august and the offer will stay open until the 31st October 2008, although this deal will only apply to customers who live within range of the O2 Home broadband network. For those of you who are ineligible, O2 have also lined up a discount on a chosen plan.

With a free wireless router also included in this deal, it looks like a reasonable deal, I’m not sure I will be tempted away from my current AOL package though, How many of you are interested in O2’s new offer?

3G Apple iPhone creates losses on unsold O2 & T-Mobile stock

April 22, 2008 by Daniel
Filed under Cell Phone Information, Cell Phones

With the 3G Apple iPhone expected this June we are hearing that the next version of the iPhone is creating losses on unsold O2 and T-Mobile stock, the cell phone companies significantly overestimated how many of the first-gen phones would sell in Europe. Those mobile operators may have had the exclusive contracts but this may also cause a big loss in the pocket if they have really over-ordered on a big scale and the question is will they keep these exclusive contracts on the 3G versions.

The “significant” losses on the early model iPhones may not be as bad according to Kathryn Huberty, an analyst at Morgan Stanley. Huberty said that some of the losses might be recouped from the monthly revenue they get from customers who bought the first devices. Now the phone users who brought the first-gen iPhones like myself will have to have a device that will lack not only in 3G but also many other improvements (better camera, bigger hard drive, faster etc). You would think we would wait for the next-gen and not buy the first device released, but I am one of those that never seem to learn, I did it with the first iPod and again with the iPhone.

The marketing hype around the iPhone made mobile executives in Europe over-excited and this has led to O2 slashing the price of Apple’s iPhone by a third (from £269 to £169), although its been said this is “part of a well thought out strategy of maximising the success of the iPhone in the UK”, I am sure it’s more to clear stock for the upcoming 3G phone. T-Mobile were even more drastic in their price cut, which took the iPhone price from €399 to €99.

Were you smart enough to not buy the iPhone and wait out for the much-improved 3G version?

Its great to see companies doing their bit to help charities and this news is the best of all as it helps children. Designer Nic Wong has partnered with HTC to produce some really cool HTC Touch phones that will be sold to raise money for the Children’s Cancer Foundation.

The four specially designed HTC Touch’s in the photo above are being auctioned on eBay’s Singapore outpost and they will be sold to the highest bidder, which will also help the CCF. Nic Wong is a top fashion designer and the HTC Touch phones are still the same specs as the normal versions, but the designs are originals and that means you will not see other people with your design.

The bidding will end on April 19th, if you want to help the CCF then head over to eBay’s Singapore outpost and place a bid and have a chance of getting a unique HTC Touch and a warm feeling inside, as you know you did your bit.

A Little About CCF:
The Children’s Cancer Foundation has raised over 26 million dollars since it was founded and they are committed to helping in the treatment and research of cancers that affect children. This includes the study of cancerous tumors, immune system disorders, children’s leukemia and cells.

It looks like Truphone is to gain SIM4travel’s travel SIM capability thanks to their takeover of the business and it’s assets which include staff in London and Portugal, the infrastructure, distribution and customer base.

Phones Review reported “With this takeover Truphone gains SIM4travel’s travel SIM capability along with SIM4travel’s Mobile Virtual Network Enabler platform. Truphone will begin integrating SIM4travel’s assets into their portfolio immediately but will take a few months to finish”.

They want to give their users much cheaper calls and they will do this by launching a singular global Truphone SIM.

You can view all the comparison photos here, the Nokia N82 does look stunning and personally the black version does it for me.

We reported that the Nokia Tube was not just a rumor anymore after an Official announcement, and today we find out that the Nokia Tube will be part of the latest Nokia 5th gen S60 full Touch UI, and it will also be the pilot handset in a new Nokia series.

This pilot handset (Nokia Tube) will not be the brands flagship handset, that will be due shortly after the Tube and we look forward to what that may include. For now we know that the Nokia Tube features a display size of between 3 and 3.5 inches with 360 x 640 pixels, plus HSDPA and uPuP support, quad-band GPRS/EDGE/UMTS, Bluetooth v2.0, Wi-Fi and a camera but we do not know the megapixels yet. The Nokia Tube should be available in Q1 2009.

Sprint Social Networking: MySpace Mobile on Web-enabled phones

Sprint is getting more into the Social Networking game by adding MySpace Mobile to their Web-enabled cell phones, while MySpace is not the cleanest of the social networks it is the biggest and I am sure this is why Sprint picked them. This new phone service will give users the ability to get direct access to their MySpace profiles on the move.

Sprint web phones will also include “MySpace Mobile tool set”, this lets users send and receive MySpace messages, post blogs and bulletins, add friends and also edit MySpace profiles…how cool is it to add friends to your MySpace on the move.

Would you use MySpace on your phone?

Cell Phone with a Plasma Display

April 3, 2008 by Daniel

We have always known that Plasma TV’s have always been better on the larger screens and you always see LCD TV’s in the small bedroom or kitchen size and never a Plasma, but a Plasma Display in a Cell Phone…what’s all that about.

According to the press release, Panasonic and AbleComm have announced today that cell phones are going to be made by Panasonic with “a small plasma display to operate on the newly announced AT&T Mobile TV service”, the reason behind this is that plasma displays apparently provide a brighter image and more contrast than LCD’s of the same size. This small phone Plasma screen only needs 1.5 volts of power to operate. Which large screen TV’s do you like more, LCD or Plasma?

Samsung AnyCall Haptic SCH-W420 Touchscreen: 22 different feedbacks
When it comes to Touchscreen phones, Apple and LG are at the top of the market, However it seems that Samsung want a piece of the action, which is why they are releasing the AnyCall Haptic SCH-W420. Samsung have worked hard to try and make this touchscreen stand out against many of the other cell phones on the market.

So what have Samsung done to make this Touchscreen so special, well they have added a vibrating facility that has 22 different feedback settings. IS it me or does that feature just seem like a waste of time.

So if you are using the Samsung AnyCall Haptic SCH-W420 to dial a number that could have a different feedback setting to when you are sending a text message. The phone will be released in South Korea next month.

New LG twisty-fold clamshell phone: copy of the Casio W53CA
LG have announced that they are to offer us a follow up to their LH2300 Touch Web phone; however one thing puzzles me about this twisty-fold clamshell, why does it look just like the Casio W53CA.

It seems that there is no stopping LG when it comes to packing features on their cell phones. This particular handset has a 5.1 megapixel with a CMOS sensor as well as a 28-mm lens. LG have also added anti-shake technology just like on their Viewty as well as 9-point auto focus.

This new clamshell cell phone has 2.8-inch LCD screen with a pixel resolution of 800 x 480. The phone is 18.9mm thick and features web browsing and a microSD slot for extra storage.

I own an LG Viewty: should I buy an Apple iPhone?

I own an LG Viewty: should I buy an Apple iPhone?
My brother decided to get himself an Apple iPhone, so he decided to give me his LG Viewty well he must have felt sorry for me as I had an old Samsung D600. I must say at first I had a little trouble getting used to the touch screen on the Viewty, but I think I am starting to get used to it now.

The thing is I still miss my D600, I think it has something to do with the menu it is much better on the Samsung than it is on the LG. Well now I have had to listen to my brother going on about how fantastic his Apple iPhone is, and that has now got me thinking.

Should I stick with the LG Viewty, or should I go and spend some money for a change and purchase an Apple iPhone?

CeBIT update: ASUS Lamborghini ZX1 is coming

CeBIT update: ASUS Lamborghini ZX1 is coming
It seems as if ASUS will make an announcement at CeBIT, and that is of the ZX1 handset, this special handset has to be a sleek and fast cell phone as it has the special name of Lamborghini.

However judging by the specs the ASUS ZX1 is not living up to the Lamborghini name, for example it has all the normal HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100, 3 megapixel camera and 128mb of ram. The cell does have built-in-WiFi and is 13.2mm thick, so will it live up to the name, only time will tell.
