Microsoft has finally launched its Office 2010 suite and Web Apps and it shows that they can make what was good even better. We often wonder how they can keep improving the software – but they have. Some of you may already know how well Office 2010 works – thanks to a free beta download, but now it is time for the real deal.

There are a number of versions available, but the two that offers the greatest value has to be Academic and Student. The former comes with just the right features that you need for everyday use, the latter comes with far too much although it comes at a fraction of the cost of the top-of-the range version.

Office 2010 Home and Student is not as much as you would think – costing just £84.51. For this you get Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Office 2010 Professional Academic costs just £49.99 – although this comes with a full range of features including: Access, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher and Word.

Other versions include: Office 2010 Home and Business and Office 2010 Professional, the cost is £187.44 and £357.19 respectively. Which version will you choose?

Design and interactive firm Hornall Anderson were given the challenge of designing the global brand packaging for Microsoft’s new software package Microsoft Office 2010.

MarketWatch.com is reporting that the project differed from normal ones because the company was asked to design the packaging and messaging for a new method of software installation called Office 2010 Product Key Cards (sans disc). These are used when purchased to activate the software which is pre-loaded on PCs.

The Hornall Anderson team had to do some in-depth research before the design phase could begin to fully understand how the consumer would react to the product key method over the usual software disc.

What the team achieved was a package with fewer words but a universally accepted approach with the box. Familiar visual cues and color-coding were used for the bundled Suite products.

Microsoft Office 2010 has finally hit shelves, but with plenty of other options out there – online and offline experiences such as Google Docs and OpenOffice.org, is it really worth spending anything from $129.99 upwards on an office package that really hasn’t had much of a facelift at all.

First and foremost, we will say that Microsoft Office is one of the most popular business and home applications ever to see the light of day. But since it’s release many years ago, and the evolution from Office ’97 upwards, we have not seen much of a change.

What us consumers really want to know is, tell me exactly what advantage I am getting from MS Office 2010 if I already have a fully licensed and working version of Office 2007? Even better, I could also go as to say as ‘what is the point in buying an office suite when I can get everything I can from OpenOffice.org‘? Which is free.

Of course, OpenOffice.org is not the only other alternative as we also have Google Docs and Zoho, which are online based workspaces. But it still remains that OpenOffice.org is the biggest competitor to any Office suite Microsoft throw at us. We highly recommend you check this out before you buy, as it might just have everything you need minus the big hole in your pocket where your money once was.

You could also delve into Office Web Apps, Microsoft’s own free online version of Office.

If I put the shoe on the other foot for one minute, and you are an MS Office user, you should find no way to convert to any of the alternatives we have discussed here. But it’s food for thought isn’t it?

Will you be upgrading to Office 2010? Can you find any benefits? Have you tried any of the other office suits on the market? We want to know what you are using and why.

Yesterday will be remembered for two things, the release of the Google Nexus One and the detailed pricing for Microsoft’s Office 2010. We have to warn you that the software is not cheap; maybe they are trying to make up for how cheap they sold Windows 7 for.

However, there is a way for shoppers to save money on the new Office suite, download the software instead of purchasing all that unnecessary packaging. The new Office 10 will come with the usual suspects, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and more and will be ready to ship some time later in the year.

According to InformationWeek, Microsoft is to make four editions of Office 2010. Standard Office Home and Student will cost $149 for the boxed version and $119 for those choosing to download. Office Home and Business will cost $279 and Office 2010 Professional will cost $499 boxed or $349 if you wish to download direct from the Microsoft website.

For College students and professors, then you will be able to get hold of Office 2010 for just $99; these copies will be made available at campus bookstores or certain retailers. All versions should be released in the middle of the year, maybe the same time as Apple launch the rumored 2010 iPhone.

Do you think that Microsoft have got it wrong with its pricing?
