Today we consider a 1GHz processor to be super-fast for a smartphone, however Qualcomm, Marvell, Texas Instruments and other microprocessor manufacturers are aiming to significant change this significantly over the next year or so.

Marvell has recently revealed a triple core processor which they hope will be a “game changer”, this processor is called the Armada 628 application processor, it has two 1.5GHz cores and one 624 MHz core, there is also a 1MB L2 cache.

These clock speeds give the chip extremely impressive performance, to put it in context the 1GHz Hummingbird chip which has been used in a lot of smartphones this year is capable of churning 90 million triangles per second, whereas the Armada 628 is capable of 200 million triangles per second.

This chip will apparently be capable of 1080p 3D video and graphics, obviously this will be very demanding on battery life, however we are reliably informed that the Armada 628MHz will feature ultra low power consumption.

In terms of availability we have no idea of a launch date, however Marvell has made the chip available for customers to sample, for more information and the full press release check out the source link below.
