Earlier this year Apple released the 2011 MacBook Pro, this was the first product on the market to feature Thunderbolt connectivity, now we are hearing that upcoming Sony VAIO models will also get Thunderbolt, however the port looks slightly different.

We first suggested that a new VAIO series would feature Thunderbolt back in March, at the time details were scarce, however recently a photo showed up on Engadget which showed us our first glimpse of the port.

The image we have seen has been embedded below, as you can see that the arrow points to a port which we have not seen before, Engadget believe that this is Sony’s Thunderbolt port, although it does look like a USB port with a blue stripe running through the middle. This could mean a few things, maybe it is just a USB 3.0 port, maybe it is Sony’s Thunderbolt port, or maybe Sony has developed a port which allows you to use both Thunderbolt devices and USB 3.0 devices via a single port.

We are not sure what to believe, if you check out the comments section on Engadget you will see that there has been a huge response, the main argument seems to be if this is a Thunderbolt port why did Sony not use the same Mini DisplayPort as Apple, surely this is going to make finding universal products which work with both ports a pain.

Do you think the new port in the photo is Thunderbolt?

When iOS 4.3 was first announced earlier this month, one of the stand out features of the software update was the new Home Sharing option. For the first time users would be able to access all their content stored on a Mac computer via a mobile device, but we are starting to hear of problems with the feature for some users.

An article over at AppleInsider is reporting that many owners of Apple’s 2011 MacBook Pro have been experiencing problems connecting devices, or keeping a connection via iTunes Home Sharing. A thread in Apple’s Discussion forums has received hundreds of posts from owners complaining of problems.

One reader comments that it is “a bigger problem” with many owners returning their new laptops because of the conflict. The reader went on to say the issue has been noted through AppleCare and retail stores.

Another forum user reported that their new MacBook Pro managed to stream to a second generation Apple TV to begin with, but then it lost connection and gave an error message “There are no movies in this library.”

Apple recently released iTunes 10.2.1 which was to add compatibility with the iOS 4.3 Home Sharing feature. When the option works correctly it allows users to share content to an unlimited amount of iOS devices over Wi-Fi.

Click here to see the Apple forum yourself. Have you had any issues with your 2011 MacBook Pro and Home Sharing?

It now seems very likely that Apple will be updating their lineup of Macbook Pro laptops on the Apple Store at some point tomorrow, but is it actually worth buying one if a better, redesigned model will follow in 2012?

We are hearing reports that next year, will be the year when Apple dishes out a full design overhaul for the Macbook Pro. The update which is planned on Thursday is seen as a hardware refresh to ‘existing’ models, but those of you who want to buy a Macbook which looks significantly different to current Macbooks, may want to hold off until 2012.

The following line of text has been published by iLounge, who have obtained their information via one of their sources:

“Next year is the year when Apple will introduce an all new design for the MacBook Pro product family, which is already under development at Quanta in Taiwan.”

With this in mind, you may want to think twice about paying $1000+ for a Macbook Pro which is just going to visually look the same as current models. Yes the new specs of the 13-inch Macbook Pro are impressive, but we’d argue that money would be better spent on a brand new Macbook Pro model, with a new design and 2012 hardware features.

Put it this way, why would you spend so much money on an old product? Something to consider once Apple press the magic refresh button on their stores worldwide. Give us your thoughts on this.

If you needed further clarification that Apple are definitely planning an imminent refresh to their existing Macbook Pro laptops, perhaps this following bit of information is all you need. New images have apparently shown the retail box for a new 13-inch Macbook Pro, complete with a rundown of official specs.

According to this report from MacRumors, the several new images of Macbook Pro retail packaging have been found. The first image shows the list of specs displayed on the 13-inch retail box, provided by fscklog.com.

Assuming the details are correct, the new 13-inch model will contain a 2.3GHz dual-core i5 Processor, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, 1280×800 display resolution, Facetime HD camera, a backlit keyboard and a weight of 2.04kb.

The specs also provide further details on the new Intel Light Peak connectivity which Apple are rumored to be calling ‘Thunderbolt’. We first mentioned about this in a previous article which you can read here.

What are your thoughts on this latest leak – It certainly looks real doesn’t it? Then again, it’s never too difficult these days to produce a professional looking image via photoshop, so we should still be a bit skeptical perhaps. Assuming these specs and features are real, we’re pretty excited about the inclusion of a dual-core Core i5 processor, and we think the backlit keyboard deserves a mention too.

As always, we’ll update you once we hear any further details on the new Macbook Pros. Come on Apple, the suspense is killing us.

Update: The same story has also been covered by Apple Insider, just to let you know.

Following on from our earlier report which seemingly pinpointed the arrival of the Macbook Pro on February 24th, a new report has detailed a full list of new specs for the Macbook Pro refresh, some of which mention features which we’ve already told you about.

As reported from Apple Insider, an article published over at French website Mac Generation has dished the dirt on what is expected in the new Macbook Pro models, although this information is all according to their ‘trusted source’.

Since we haven’t heard a full list of specs prior to this report though, you’ll definitely want to know what has been said. Firstly, it looks like that feature we mentioned a few days ago, in which Apple will be equipping Macbook Pro models with an SSD drive to boot up Mac OS X is now all but confirmed. The drives have now been identified as 16GB Go SSD mSATA drives.

It looks like Apple will once again continue to offer varied specifications depending on which size Macbook Pro you choose to buy, but the good news is that 13-inch models could replace the Intel Core 2 Duo processor, with a much faster Core i3 chip. Other specific features to the 13-inch model could be the inclusion of 3 USB ports – another minor refresh which could make all the difference with consumers.

Other features of the 13-inch model include an optional matte screen and an impressive 12 hours of battery life. Mac Generation has even put pricing down for the new models, as they believe Apple’s two 13-inch models will be available for €1,199 and €1,499.

They have also listed information for the 15-inch and 17-inch new Macbook Pro models, head to their website above for the details. We remind you again that this information hasn’t been verified yet, but it’s a pretty huge leak if you think about it.

What are your thoughts on the specs mentioned? We think that 12 hours of battery life is a major incentive for picking this up, and the price was always going to be pretty high for a new Apple product. We’re glad that the processors have been upgraded, although theres no mention of glass trackpads which was a rumored feature we told you about recently.

We have yet more fresh details to bring you now on the expected Apple Macbook Pro 2011 hardware refresh, as it has been reported that the new models may replace the existing trackpad with a glass design, amongst other new features.

According to BGR’s ‘exclusive’ report, their Apple tipster has told them that a glass trackpad design is a strong possibility for the new models, which could be announced by Apple at any time – or even this Thursday if previous rumors are to be believed.

These glass trackpads are thought to be slightly larger in size than the trackpads you see in current Macbook Pro models. Here is a picture of the normal trackpad, just to refresh your memory:

As you can see, there isn’t a lot of room for Apple to maneuver between this larger trackpad and the keyboard, it will be interesting to see if the keyboard is altered slightly as well.

Other details mentioned in BGR’s report reveal that the Mac OS X software could be loaded to a separate built-in SSD drive, but everything else installed on the Mac will still make use of a hard drive. This feature alone could make devices significantly faster than current Macbook Pros, so we’re waiting to hear more details about this aspect.

You’ll be pleased to know that the new models may even be as much as half a pound lighter than the old models, which is a much welcome aspect of the refresh if it turns out to be true – you still can’t beat the Macbook Air in the weight department though.

What are your thoughts on these new potential features for the 2011 Macbook Pro? Which are you more excited about? The glass trackpad rumor sounds the most interesting to us.

Evidence of a new range of MacBook Pro’s is growing by the day, we recently told you about some SKUs which appeared on Best Buy, and also had some video’s from people trying to predict what Apple were planning. Now it looks like we could see some new MacBook Pro’s sometime this week.

AppleInsider has an article reporting that some dealers could be receiving sealed pallet shipments as early as tomorrow. They have allegedly been given strict warnings not to open the shipments. Also some of its bigger European retailers were told this weekend they could get deliveries today, which is Presidents Day in the US.

Apple normally avoids having major product launches on federal holidays, and according to someone who says they are familiar with the matter, an official announcement is due anytime. This same person also claims that any dealer who opens any of the shipments could lose their licenses.

It is claimed that major European distributors ran out of MacBook Pros at the beginning of the month, with regional sellers not able to order new stock for more than two weeks. Another article on AppleInsider is revealing that Apple has raised shipping times for its range of notebooks, instead of the usual three days it has gone up to five days.

What do you think will we hear some official news soon?

We have been keeping you up to date recently on potential new Macbook Pro arrivals, but now we have some fresh details which are sure to attract your interest. A new advertisement by Intel has teased an upcoming Macbook Pro, but one which will look different from the rest.

According to this report by BGR, the Ad in question reveals that Apple may be planning to unleash a sexy Black version of their Macbook Pro laptop, if Intel’s latest promo turns out to be real. Firstly, let’s take a look at it below:

It looks pretty special doesn’t it? The picture doesn’t give away much, but you can definitely see the black display and black body in the Macbook’s position shown above. We definitely love the classic Silver Macbook Pro, but we can’t help but get excited over a new color joining the family.

The ad itself isn’t about the Macbook Pro specifically, rather a reminder from Intel about the multimedia capabilities of their new Core i5 processors, which are featured on their current 15-inch model Macbook Pros. You can check them out on the Apple store here.

We’re praying that more info on this elusive black model comes to light soon, for now let us know your thoughts on a new color – would you dig a sleek black Macbook Pro or not? It could be hitting the Apple Store as early as this March. Stay tuned for further details on this as we get it.
