The Surface Pro from Microsoft could not even score a 2 on reparability, so we knew from the start that the 2013 MacBook Air refresh would do better. However, it’s still not as good as you would hope, and so this latest Apple update is still awkward to mend, unlike the very popular Galaxy S4.

For years iFixit has got great satisfaction from tearing devices apart, and so we know they would not hang around when it came to taking the new 2014 MacBook Air apart. While the model is not that different to 2012 model, there are three changes we know of, and that is the processor, which has been upgraded to the new Haswell chips, a faster 802.11ac WiFi chip, and finally a smaller SSD, although not in terms of capacity.

Sorry, almost forgot that larger 7,150mAh battery, which has helped to increase the battery life compared to the 2012 model, which you can see in a comparison of the two models here. We know you are wondering why the low reparability score of 4?

There are several reasons why, the first is because Apple insists on using proprietary screws in the build process, but it is the lack of upgradeability with the SSD and RAM that is the biggest issue here.

iFixit has 15 steps as part of this 2013 MacBook Air refresh teardown, but please don’t try it yourself.

On another note, it’s clear to see that this new model is more of an evolution, and not the revolution that we wanted to see. The design has been used for a few years now, and we wonder what Apple plan to do next? We have to wonder if it is now time that Apple rethink things and do away with the MacBook Air, and just make the more powerful MacBook Pro slightly thinner and lighter?

Having already discussed that the MacBook Air will come with several minor changes from today, June 10, 2013, we thought we would take a closer look to see how this MacBook Air refresh compares to the 2012 model in terms of specs.

2013 MacBook Air vs. 2012 model differences – The first thing that we have noticed is the storage, as the 2012 models came with either a 64GB or 128GB for the 11-inch model or 128GB and 256GB for the 13-inch MacBook Air. Compare this to the 2013 models, which are pretty much the same, apart from the 64GB model has now been dropped in place of the 128GB one. However, you also have the option to increase this to 512GB.

The processor in the 2012 MacBook Air when compared to the 2013 version is the biggest change, as it goes from the older Intel Core i5 and i7 generation to the new Haswell ULT architecture, which will give you far more power when you need it most.

Graphics have also been improved, so instead of the Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the outgoing model, you’ll now get the much-improved Intel HD Graphics 5000 instead. Another change is wireless networking, which goes from 802.11n to 802.11ac, which helps to improve speeds. If you have an Airport Extreme base station, then you might want to consider purchasing the new model instead.

2013 MacBook Air vs. 2012 battery life – First we will look at the 2012 11-inch MacBook Air, which offers up to 5 hours wireless web, compared to 7 hours for the 13-inch model. Compare this to the 2013 versions, which are 9 and 12 hours wireless web respectively.

Finally we have the 2012 and 2013 MacBook Air prices. The four 2012 prices are as follows, $999, $1199, $1199 and $1399. The 2013 models are $999, $1199, $1099 and $1299, so as you can see Apple has managed to get a little aggressive on the pricing.

These are the only changes from the 2012 and 2013 model, so if you are considering getting a new MacBook Air, make certain you are getting one of the new models, because not only are some models cheaper, but they come with improved hardware as well.

Well, we knew that one MacBook was going to get the new Haswell processor from Intel, and it seems pretty obvious now that it had to be the new 2013 MacBook Air, considering the Pro had already had a minor update earlier this year.

While this may not be the massive change that we had hoped to have seen with the MacBook Air, there are several key changes that make this a more than reasonable update, such as improved battery life, which we had already predicted, as well as faster WiFi speeds, again we reported on this as well a few weeks ago.

The new 2013 MacBook Air was unveiled during WWDC earlier today, and you’ll be happy to know that shipping will begin today, and as of writing this the Apple Store has now gone live once again.

As usual there are 2 sizes, the 11-inch and 13-inch, with two choices for either size. The differences are to the size of the storage only, so 128GB and 256GB.

The MacBook Air prices for the 2013 models are as follows: 11-inch: 128GB, $999.00, 11-inch: 256GB, $1,199.00, 13-inch: 128GB, $1,099.00 and finally the 13-inch: 256GB for $1,299.00.

Three main MacBook Air features for 2013 – First up we have the all-day battery, so expect the 11-inch version to last around 9 hours and the 13-inch model battery can go as much as 12 hours. Secondly, there is the new Haswell CPU and the Intel HD Graphics 5000, making tasks much faster. Finally, there is the option to increase the flash storage up to 512GB.

That’s all the changes there is for the new MacBook Pro for now, although these will become even better once Mac OS X Mavericks is released later this year. We’re not too sure on the price of this new OS, but we’re sure that if you purchase one of the new MacBook Air devices, then your copy of Mavericks will be free once released.

While the gaming community are bracing themselves for some monumental announcements from Sony and Microsoft as part of E3 2013 on June 10, the tech world is equally as excited to find out the new surprises that Apple has in store for the world at WWDC 2013, which will also be taking place on the same day.

Being held at the Moscone Center as what has now become tradition, it looks like a new 2013 MacBook Air laptop is going to be one of the standout highlights at the event. We discussed the likelihood of this happening in a previous report here, but now fresh details are emerging on what potential features a new MacBook Air may possess.

The guys over at 9to5Mac have suggested that new faster WiFi could be an included feature of a new MacBook Air. The device could be equipped with the new faster 802.11ac WiFi standard, which would allow for fast HD movie streaming, improved file downloads and general file transfers.

This new faster WiFi could come along with already rumored 2013 MacBook Air features, which include a 1080p front camera with 1080p video capabilities, a dual-microphone system and support for Intel’s new 4th generation Core processors. Interestingly, there doesn’t appear to be many details on what new design a MacBook Air refresh will adopt – which of course keeps the surprise element intact nicely.

The MacBook Air continues to be a laptop geared towards the premium consumer, so let us know if you are still willing to make your annual refresh, if Apple plans to stick to their same pricing strategy. Assuming that a refresh is coming, would you opt for the 11-inch or the 13-inch model?

There seems to be growing evidence that there will be a MacBook Air and MacBook Pro Retina refresh next Monday, which is expected to be the potential hardware highlight for WWDC 2013. Although, it’s highly likely that Apple may only refresh the one model.

9to5Mac reports that some leaked part codes points to some imminent Apple products, and the most likely is the MacBook line, and although we have been hoping for a MacBook Air and Pro refresh, these codes may point to the same model, but different sizes and varying hardware, such as RAM, storage etc.

Having said that, MacBook Air and Pro levels are running low and therefore could point to both models receiving a refresh for 2013. Whenever inventory is constrained it’s usually a good indication that Apple is about to update their models, just as we’ve seen in the past.

If Apple were to upgrade the Air, then there’s a small chance that it could come with a Retina display, although that’s highly unlikely. However, its more than likely going to come with the new Haswell processor, as might the Pro, which could help improve battery life even further.

Having said that, there have also been rumors that the Mac Mini and Mac Pro could also be refreshed for 2013, and so could make a showing during the WWDC keynote on Monday.

If Apple were to announce new products on Monday, then it will most likely be released that day, so expect the Apple store to go down on June 10, 2013. However, don’t expect these new notebooks and/or Mac Mini and Mac pro to come pre-installed with OS X 10.9, as this will not be released until late July, going by the previous update.

Expectations for the 2013 MacBook Air and Pro are pretty high, as the updated models need to deliver more than their current models. One area that needs to be improved on is their battery life, and even though they are already impressive, we still demand more because of changing lifestyles.

2013 MacBook Air and Pro battery life increase – Apple will not have to do much to get more life from its battery, as Intel would have done most of that work with their Haswell processor. If we are to believe what PCWorld has been reporting, then the increase in battery life for Apple’s upcoming MacBook refresh will be considerable, although we have no idea of the figures.

That’s not all, MacBook Air and Pro graphics is said to triple in performance just by making use of the Haswell CPU, but as always we need to see real-world tests to confirm this, as the likes of Intel always has a habit of making wild claims.

We have to remember that Apple hasn’t confirmed the use of the new Haswell chip, or even a MacBook Air and MacBook Pro refresh, but we hope to hear something during WWDC 2013 next month. However, with stock now running low on both devices, it’s hard not to imagine new models next month.

New hardware has already been spotted for these new 2013 Apple notebooks, so the evidence is stacking up. Let’s say Apple were to refresh the line, then don’t expect any radical changes, as the refresh is only expected to be minor. Having said that, the current MacBook Air is several years old in design, and would benefit from a redesign far more than the Pro, wouldn’t you agree?

With WWDC 2013 fast approaching it comes as no surprise that stock of the current MacBook Air is feeling a little constrained. We say this because availability of the device has begun to dry up, which only fuels speculation of a refresh.

What to expect from a 2013 MacBook Air refresh – The most likely MacBook Air upgrade for 2013 would be the Haswell processor, as this is due to hit devices in June, so this would be a perfect opportunity for Apple to unveil their thin notebook with this latest Intel CPU during WWDC next month.

If this were the case, then we should expect a faster MacBook Air in 2013, along with improved battery life. But there is also another feature that could make it onto the Apple’s thinner notebook, Retina.

There’s been speculation for a while now that we could see a 2013 MacBook Air with Retina display. However, this feature is a controversial one, as some of our readers have expressed they have no need for an improved screen on the Air, although this is not a view shared by all, so where do you stand?

Retina vs. Haswell – Personally, Haswell is almost certain to make it into the 2013 MacBook Air refresh, with the Retina display not happening until 2014, but don’t take my word for it.

Likely 2013 MacBook Air release – According to recent rumors the new model could be released as early as the end of June, although a July release is more possible, as this was the same month the current Max OS X update was released, so it would make sense for the next-generation MacBook Air to come out with OS X 10.9 already installed. However, this would contradict what Tim Cook recently said about no new products until the fall.

It’s almost certain that we will see a sneak peak at iOS 7, but not the next iPhone. However, some of you also expect to see a 2013 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro refresh, but we are still not one hundred percent on that.

However, if you are looking for a way to upgrade your MacBook Air and Pro, then there is an unusual MacBook Air and Pro keyboard upgrade, which also covers any Mac keyboard, such as one for your iMac. This is a Kickstarter, so it may not happen, but we sure hope it does.

Okay, so this is not what you would have liked, but if you are unable to purchase the new MacBook models later this year, then this minor upgrade will help bring new life into your current MacBook or Mac keyboard.

The Kickstarter wants you to be able to upgrade your keyboard to wooden keys, with a choice of rosewood or bamboo. Don’t worry about adding extra bulk to your device, as the wood is just 0.6 mm thin. The Wooden keys will cost $40 for the MacBook Pro and Mac keyboard, but $45 for the numeric keyboard.

Don’t worry about ruining your keyboard, as they can be easily peeled off once you have grown tired with the wooden keys, or if they start to wear, you’ll also be pleased to know that no residue will be left behind.

More details can be found on the Kickstarter website, but we can tell you that with 23 days to go $7,882 has been pledged of its $25,000 goal. So if you would like to pimp your Mac keyboard then you had best make your pledge now.

Even though the MacBook Pro received a small update at the start of the year, we still expect to see another this year, along with the MacBook Air as well. Just last week we discussed how WWDC 2013 could be the platform to reveal these new models with them releasing later that day. However, this seems to conflict with what Tim Cook had said.

During Apple’s earnings call, Cook had said they will have no new products until the fall this year, which would mean we should not expect to see any new products until late September at the earliest. So what about continued rumors that we will see the MacBook Pro and Air refreshed in June?

There are several ways to look at this, first of which could be Apple throwing us off the scent, which is something they have been good at in the past. Secondly we will not see any new devices until the fall, and so these persist rumors are all they are, rumors.

However, we do have another possibility, can we consider a MacBook Air and MacBook Pro refresh as new, because if not these would not count as those new fall 2013 products?

When Tim Cook said that they will not be releasing any new products until fall 2013, maybe he was talking about a completely new device, and not a minor refresh. Now a complete redesign of the MacBook Air could count as a new product, as it would not be a refresh, so if we look at it like that then we should expect just some minor changes, such as a spec bump to the new Haswell processor.

Let’s say this is the case; we could see the elusive full on Apple TV set, or maybe the iWatch released in the latter part of 2013? Whatever happens, we do expect Apple to shock us with something radical this year, let’s face it, they need to do something.

Each year we wonder what Apple will offer us in terms of new devices, or upgrades of products they already have on the market. Two of which are the 2013 MacBook Air and Pro, because while the latter has already received a minor update earlier this year, we are still expecting to see another.

However, this is where things get a little conflicting, because a new rumor suggests that Apple could offer a 2013 MacBook Air refresh and a 2013 MacBook Pro update in June. Where we find this report conflicting is the fact that Tim Cook has already said that Apple will not be releasing any new products until the fall, which is late September.

Having said that, we all know how Apple has a tendency to say things and do the complete opposite.

So why June? There are two reasons why June has been put forward as a potential date for new MacBook Air and Pro models; the first is because this is the date that the new Intel Haswell processor is released to the market. And secondly, June is when Apple will hold the 2013 WWDC event, which could bring one or two surprises, unless what Cook is telling us is the truth?

According to Digitimes sources there have not been any signs that these two Apple notebooks will see any design changes to its exterior, so the upgrades could only be internal. This is a shame, as the MacBook Air is in need of a new design, as well as a retina display, although this would be considered internal.

If we are to see a new MacBook Pro again this year then we have to wonder if Apple will release a 17-inch version, as there are some consumers and business users longing for some extra real-estate?
