Panasonic recently officially unveiled their new Lumix DMC-GF3 digital camera, apparently it is the company’s lightest and smallest camera to offer an interchangeable lens system, we are told that it is roughly 16.5% smaller than its predecessor, the GF2.

In terms of technical specifications it features a 12.1 megapixel Live MOS sensor, support for SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards, an ISO range of 160-6400 and auto-focus, Panasonic also claim that the Venus Engine FHD image processor ensures that you get DSLR-like quality thanks to a balance between noise reduction and resolution. The aforementioned image processor is said to deliver low energy consumption to ensure you get adequate life from a smaller than average battery.

If you are looking to capture video you will be glad to hear that the GF3 is capable of recording 1920 x 1080 HD video, it records this video in the AVCHD format. Sadly there is no 3D video capture, however if you use the correct lens you can capture 3D stills. The auto-focus feature allows you to touch the LCD where you want the camera to focus.

There is an intelligent auto made which makes capturing video and photos extremely simple, by pressing the iA button you get face detection, intelligent ISO control, intelligent scene selection, MEGA O.I.S (depending on which lens you use), intelligent D-range control and AF tracking. There is also a new iA Plus mode, this is said to give you enhancements which standard camera modes do not offer, iA Plus gives you the benefit of color balance adjustments (adjustable via an on-screen slider), exposure compensation and defocusing around faces.

The GF3 mainly differs from the GF2 mainly in terms of physical design rather than specifications, you still get a 3-inch touchscreen LCD display on the rear and this is said to be intuitive and easy to use, however it is the smaller, lighter design which is a real success. The body alone weighs just 7.83oz and measures in at 114mm x 67mm x 34mm. You can see all of the technical specs by checking out this link, one inferior thing about the GF3 when compared to the GF2 is the fact that it features a mono mic rather than the GF2′s stereo mic.

For those of you who are seriously considering purchasing the Panasonic Lumix GF3 you will be interested to know that it will be available in brown, red, white or black and will cost $699.99 with the 14mm lens kit when it becomes available in July, in August the camera will launch with a 14-42mm lens kit system, this will cost $599.99. In terms of accessories Panasonic will be selling cases, straps and external flashes along with PL and ND filters.

Panasonic have announced in Japan that they will showcase a new cell phone next week at the CEATEC exhibition. The new Lumix device features a camera with a 13.2MP CMOS sensor.

Serkan Toto of MobileCrunch is reporting that the company has put up a teaser site for the new handset, but no pictures are available. Lumix is normally associated with Panasonic’s cameras so the handset will probably have a good shooter bundled with it.

Some details have been revealed such as the screen which is a 3.3-inch LCD with 854×480 resolution. Other features include; micro SDHC slot, Wi-Fi, “Mobile VenusEngine” for HD images, DLNA support, and measurements of 116x52x17.7mm with a weight of 146g.

The full details are set to be announced on the first day of CEATEC on October 5. It is not known if the device will be available outside of Japan.
