The UK based rental service, LOVEFiLM, has been negotiating its way into a wide range of products in the last year, particularly in its homeland as well as other parts of the world. It offers subscribers a superb variety of TV shows along with a huge range of movies, which can be streamed or sent to their home address via the post. Now it seems South Korean based electronics giant LG will be taking advantage of this service with their range of Smart TVs.

The Amazon owned LOVEFiLM confirmed the news of the partnership with LG when they announced their service would be making its debut on their new range of Smart TVs. The news was also confirmed at the other when LG announced all their future Smart TVs would include the LOVEFiLM Instant App, making access to the streaming service easy and a persuasive offer for those looking to invest in a new TV.

As TechRadar explains future owners of LG Smart TVs will now have instant access to a collection of more than 5000 TV shows and movies providing they are subscribed to the monthly paid LOVEFiLM service. It will also mean the owners can take advantage of the Nuance Dragon voice-recognition software, built into the new Magic Remote which the company showcased at CES earlier this month.

Despite LG’s dominance in the TV market, they are not the first company to snap up the LOVEFiLM services on their Smart TVs. However this deal will put them back in the high end for the features and services they have on offer from their products. A close rival to LOVEFiLM, Netflix also launched in the UK recently which forced Amazon to respond with a price cut to their service.

What do you think of these services? Are you pleased to see LOVEFiLM now available on LG Smart TVs?

Earlier today we told you about the Netflix streaming service being launched in the UK for the first time. Now Amazon has responded to the Netflix UK launch with a Lovefilm price cut to fend off the competition from its rival.

Amazon has decided not to take the Netflix launch lying down as its competition for consumers money just got more intense. TechRadar are reporting that Lovefilm will now undercut the new Netflix offering by introducing an unlimited streaming service for £4.99 per month, which compares to Netflix’s service that is priced at £5.99 per month.

Users also get a similar thirty day free trial of the service, and the deal has been available for a few weeks now, but Lovefilm has stressed the £4.99 price is here to stay and won’t be going up. Users will have access to an unlimited amount of content that can be streamed to a number of devices.

These include the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Apple iPad, and a number of Smart TVs from the likes of Sony and Samsung amongst others. The company also took the time to reveal it now has two million paying subscribers, and had a record amount of new customer’s joining during the fourth quarter of 2011.

Exact numbers were not given of how many joined but the company did say there were “hundreds of thousands” signing up between October and December 2011. The company does offer a postal service to consumers as well with DVDs and games on offer.

Have you used Lovefilm in the past?

Users in the US have been able to access the Netflix service since 2007, while users in Europe the service has so far been elusive. Now we can tell you that Netflix plans an early 2012 release of its streaming service in the UK and Ireland, with the rest of Europe maybe getting it later.

Netflix will be going up against a variety of other streaming services when it launches in the UK and Ireland though. In the UK residents already have Lovefilm and services from the BBC iPlayer and Channel 4’s 4oD service. ZDNet are reporting that Netflix have confirmed its unlimited TV and movie streaming services are incoming for a monthly subscription.

The company is not expected to bring its DVD and Blu-ray mail order services to the region though. Netflix had previously thought of bringing its services to Europe but put plans on ice as reaction to them was lukewarm.

Currently Netflix who are based in California, offers its streaming services in the US and Canada alongside forty other countries around the world. It is expected to eventually offer its services to other parts of Europe, with Spain thought to be a likely target.

For now there is no exact date or pricing available, but Netflix promised this will be announced closer to the launch date. There are a lot of on-demand services offered free in the UK except for the purchase of a TV license. But it will also go up against Apple’s iTunes and Lovefilm owned by Amazon. Subscribers of Sky TV also have access to the company’s Anytime+ service, and customers of Virgin Media also have an on demand service.

Will you be taking up a Netflix subscription when it is available?

It looks as though Samsung has been given a reason to celebrate this week, after its TV App Store – a service available on their Smart TV range – reached the download landmark of 2 million. It was only about a month ago, that the Samsung App Store surpassed the 1 million mark.

As Marc Chacksfield over at techradar.com notes, these figures prove that the idea of being able to access applications through people’s television screens is becoming more and more popular. With the recent introduction of a “search everything” bar, navigating the apps should be a lot easier.

The Samsung TV App Store already includes many social networking and movie-related applications such as Twitter, Facebook and LoveFilm, and it now appears that even more companies want to add other apps – such as Skype – to connected television sets.

According to a recent article by David Jani over at itproportal.com, some of the most downloaded apps on the Samsung TV App Store include Texas Holdem, Google Maps, ESPN Next Level, AccuWeather, Hulu Plus and YouTube.

With Samsung planning to sell 12 million Smart TVs just this year, it looks as though the download landmark of 3 million won’t be too far off? Do you own a Samsung TV? If so, what do you think of the TV App Store. I have to admit, we love using the apps on ours.

I have some great news for all you movie lovers out there. According to an article written by Johnny Cullen over at vg247.com, PS3 owners in the UK will be able to get Lovefilm sometime in November, although we are still waiting on an exact date.

There was a video on YouTube that provided confirmation, but since writing this article it appears to have been removed. I personally can’t wait if this service is indeed going to arrive on our PS3s. It is said that there will be no extra charges for existing mail customers.

The application will be accessible from the XMB menu and is a subscription-based service, which is going to allow you to stream instantly from a database of thousands of movies. Existing members can also control their Blu-ray and DVD rentals.

What do you think about the Lovefilm streaming service coming to the PS3?
