The photo on this page shows the iPhone 3G, Samsung Instinct and LG Dare. These three phones are major competitors and while their features also show this to be true, you would not think so considering all the attention Apple’s phone has had in comparison.

Engadget has decided to give these three cell phones a little test in the name of speed, the LG Dare was shown to consistently beat the iPhone 3G by between 50-100kbps on Verizon’s EV-DO network.

This test may not be totally fair as the speed may depend on circumstances, the time of day, network in your area and other conditions.

The reviewers said they will be following up with some more tests on the iPhone vs the Dare and also a Samsung Instinct speed test, you can see their results detailed in photos here.

What’s your favorite phone out of the iPhone 3G, Samsung Instinct and LG Dare?

For us the iPhone 3G is in a league of it’s own currently, this may not be down to the phones hardware but more about the 3rd party app support and software. If you’re looking for a phone with extreme expandability, then the iPhone is the way to go.

how does lg dare compare
Earlier today Peter showed a full breakdown of the LG Dare that goes on sale today, he also wrote about the pricing details on Verizon Wireless. We now look at how the LG Dare compares in features to the Samsung Instinct and the upcoming Apple iPhone 3G.

Here is a quick summery of some main features of each phone, each phone has many other unique features that can be viewed on the brands website, links are provided where possible.

First up is the LG Dare, this phone has 3G, a 3.2-megapixel camera with flash, full HTML browser, 3-inch 262k-color touch-screen at 240-by-400, dimensions are 4.1 by 2.2 by 0.5 inches and it weighs 3.76 ounces. The main selling feature of this phone is the high-quality video recording; this records 640-by-480 video at up to 120 frames per second. This is a first in the cell phone world. The LG Dare will cost $199 with a $50 mail-in rebate and two-year contract. View more details here.

Next up is the Samsung Instinct, this phone has 3G, a 2-megapixel camera, a full HTML browser, digital music player, integrated GPS with Sprint navigation, support for Sprint Radio and Sprint Live TV, Visual Voicemail with support for POP3 and IMAP email, 2GB Storage space via micro SD slot, Bluetooth, the phone can act as a modem and it measures 4.57×2.17×0.49 inches and weights 4.4 ounces. One of the main selling points is the very low price of $130 with $100 mail-in rebate. View more details on Samsung.

Last we have the iPhone 2.0, this phone features EDGE, 3G, or Wi-Fi, 8GB of storage for the $199 model, a full HTML safari browser, 2-megapixel camera, GPS that is active only when you need it. The real selling point for the iPhone is the third-party applications available through the upcoming App Store. This service will be much better than any other phone can offer. The iPhones specs do not justify the kind of support and other services you get with the iPhone 3G, visit Apple here to really understand the amount of extras you get.

Your choice of phone will really depend on what your looking for, if we are talking phone features for money then the LG Dare would be the best choice thanks to the better 3.2-megapixel camera and amazing 120fps video recording, but for $130 you can still get video recording on the Samsung Instinct, although not as good.

Where the 3G iPhone lacks in video recording and camera pixels, it makes up in third party application support. With that kind of support these features and a lot more can be added.

LG Dare is a 3G phone on Verizon’s EVDO network

When you take a look at different carriers in the U.S. they seem to have handsets that are limited to just them, Sprint has the Samsung Instinct, AT&T has the iPhone, and now Verizon Wireless has their own, the LG Dare which is launched today. The main features of this phone are the touch-screen and having 3G, the high-quality video recording and the 3.2-megapixel camera, which is a better offering than the iPhone.

When phone companies like LG design a touch-screen handset like the Dare, they seem to all follow in the iPhones footsteps, and that is with a black slab design. The phone’s dimensions are 4.1 by 2.2 by 0.5 inches and weighs in at weighs 3.76 ounces. The 3-inch 262k-color touch-screen is a 240-by-400, and viewing your images which you have taken with your 3.2-megapixel camera looks superb.

If you thought that the new LG Dare was a smartphone you would be wrong, the handset runs a modified version of the operating system that is used on the Verizon LG Voyager, it is packed with a host of fun features. Some of these features include, a favorite’s display, this allows you to arrange your photos of your friends on screen, so you can speed dial just by selecting a friends picture. Ok I know what you are thinking, the HTC Touch also does this, and yes we know it does, but LG have managed to make it a cuter system.

According to PC Mag, they reckon that this is not the biggest feature of the LG Dare though; it is the camera especially the video camera. The LG Dare will record at 640-by-480 video at up to 120 frames per second; this is unheard of from a camera phone from the U.S. before. Taking still images is also a dream, the 3.2 megapixel camera uses a Schneider-Kreuznach lens, and this produces images greater than most camera phones in the U.S. today.
The LG Dare is a lot like the iPhone, as it uses an accelerometer, this means that when you turn your phone the orientation of the picture will also change. It seems as if the Dare is more like the iPhone than LG would like to think. However; things do take a turn for the worst when it comes to its Web browser, it uses Teleca’s Obigo. The software is clunky and becomes very frustrating, the browser is also on the slow side, and LG should have taken some pointers from the browsers used from some of their competitors.

The LG Dare goes on sale today June 26, and will cost $199.99, with a $50 mail-in rebate with a two-year contract.
