The LG Ally on Verizon that was due to launch with Big Red a couple of days ago for some reason didn’t. The Android powered handsets are still only showing on Verizon site as pre-orders.

Customers who have already made a pre-order have been receiving emails from Verizon explaining that they will be “the first to receive the phone upon initial availability on or after May 27th.” This seems to mean that Verizon are keeping their options open just in case there has been some sort of software or hardware glitch.

The handsets were due to start selling on the 20th May, but now pre-orders have been extended through to the 26th and sales starting on the 27th. This is a puzzling situation and with no official word speculation of supply problems or other issues could arise.

If you have been a fan of LG handsets for some time you probably admit that their OS seriously restricts their functionality, however the LG Ally attempts to change this by offering Android 2.1.

Recently the Android Community have reviewed the handset, and it must be said despite being no match for HTC’s latest Android handsets, it is at least a step in the right direction.

Their review takes a deep look at the Ally’s body, software, performance hardware, camera and battery, most of their review is pretty positive, however they can’t get away from the fact that in the hands it feels like “a piece of industrial equipment”, thanks to it’s heavy and ugly design.

In terms of the handset’s display and keyboard-sliding mechanics the Android Community had no complaints, however they were less than happy with the mediocre keyboard. In the end their review states that the handset is like a better version of the Motorola Devour, which is no huge compliment, check out their full review by clicking on the source link below (their review features plenty of photos).

So far we have only posted a handful of LG Ally articles, however more and more details are beginning to show up, a recent article posted on IntoMobile features a gallery of LG Ally photos along with a deep look into the handset.

If you check out IntoMobile’s article you can see a brief review, a hands-on video demo and a full gallery of images (some of which can be seen at the end of this post), the full slide-out QWERTY keyboard is a nice feature as its raised keys and well-spaced design make it extremely easy to use, however this does give the handset a very thick design.

According to IntoMobile the Ally’s biggest downfall is its plasticky feel and poor build quality, also the handset’s design is not unlike what you would expect from a mid-range smartphone two-years ago, its a shame as if LG had paid more attention to detail it could have been a really great Android smartphone.

The LG Ally is never going to be a high-end smartphone which will compete with the iPhone 3GS, HTC Incredible or HTC Evo 4G, however it should do pretty well if priced competitively in the mid-range smartphone market, to find out more check out the link below.

Will you buy the LG Ally?

LG have announced today of the upcoming release of their new Smartphone the LG Ally. The device will be their first Android powered phone and will be available on May 20th. LG have not said what carrier the new device will be on but the smart money is on Verizon.

The phone will be marketed with the new Iron Man 2 movie which is released this weekend. An augmented reality app will be bundled with the Ally that adds enhanced visual content on the Allys display when the camera is pointed at specific objects.

The Ally might look familiar as apparently it is simply a US version of what we know as the Aloha or LU2300. Official details are sketchy at present with some saying it will have a 1 GHz CPU and others reckon on a 600 MHz ARM11 CPU. LG have confirmed a touchscreen and full slide out QWERTY keyboard. LG will be holding an event in New York on the 11th of this month to show off the Ally and other new releases.
