A few days ago we reported that romaine lettuce was being recalled across 23 U.S. states due to contamination, we are now hearing that the recall is expanding and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are doing their utmost to pinpoint the source of the contamination.

The contamination has so far sickened at least 19 people with a rare strain of Escherichia coli (E.coli), however officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest that there are 10 more probable linked cases.

The main problem with finding the exact point of contamination is due to the problems experts are experiencing with identifying the infection, this has led to possible missed outbreaks, which could have helped narrow down probable source of infection.

The outbreak should be pretty much under control now as we have heard that most of the affected lettuce has a “use by” date of May 9th / 10th, that said if you are suffering symptoms such as diarrhea it may be worth contacting your doctor.

The affected lettuce was apparently sold by the California-based Andrew Smith Co, their customers tend to be food service establishments which buy in bulk, we are also being assured that bagged lettuce in stores should be fine.
