Prior to CES 2012 we told you that the annual show would almost certainly reveal a smartphone which runs on an Intel processor and compete directly against ARM, well it turns out that we were correct as Lenovo debuted the K800.

Specs which we can confirm include a 4.5-inch display which outputs at 720p, a single-core 32nm Intel Atom Z2460 (1.6GHz) processor, an 8 megapixel camera on the rear and WCDMA HSPA+, WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS connectivity. The K800 smartphones at CES 2012 all ran Android 2.3 Gingerbread and we’re not sure whether an update to Android 4.0 Ice Scream Sandwich is planned, all we do know is that Lenovo developers have heavily skinned the OS and bundled lots of pre-installed applications. Sometimes skinned’s versions of Android can adversely affect Android user friendliness, also third-party software can often be pretty lackluster, so we have some minor concerns about this aspect of the K800, that said the guys over at Engadget seemed to suggest that the skin didn’t take away from the Android-experience which millions of us now love.

Currently there is a big question-mark hovering over Intel Medfield performance and power consumption, sadly the sample at CES had no access to the Android market so benchmarking tools couldn’t be installed, however we are told that in SunSpider it slightly outperformed the Galaxy Nexus, if efficiency isn’t great we are glad to reveal that under the battery cover there’s a 1900mAh battery.

If you head over to LaptopMag’s blog you can see a brief hands-on video where we get to see the K800′s great multimedia capabilities, the single-core chip seems no slouch and when panning to different parts of a video there is no lag whatsoever. We also get to see a beautiful-looking gallery app where the user can see captured photos etc, sadly the video is less than two minutes long so there’s not much else on show.

In terms of design the K800 seems a little hit and miss, the soft comfortable finish is complemented by Engadget and so is its ‘noticeably light’ weight. On the top edge there’s a power button, speaker and 3.5mm jack, on the bottom edge there’s a microUSB port and a weird grill which almost looks like a vent for cooling (perhaps this is another speaker, we’re not sure what it is at present) you can see what we mean below.

As previously mentioned the Medfield processor is what people want to know more about, as the K800 is the ‘World’s first Intel-based smartphone’ we don’t yet know how it will compare to ARM, but we think that Mefield’s true potential will show once we see Medfield-based Android 4.0 and WP7 smartphones, also now that we have seen a single-core Intel processor for smartphones we’re sure that a multi-core offering isn’t too far away.

Sadly the K800 won’t arrive in the US, but it should hit China in Q2 2012, hopefully we will see a follow-up device in the near future with LTE connectivity, a multi-core Intel processor, a thinner design and a more up-to-date operating system – if so it could be a formidable smartphone.

Do you think Intel has a strong future in the smartphone market? Are you surprised to see Intel’s first-ever smartphone running Android rather than WP7 given Microsoft’s close relationship with Intel in the past? We sure are! You can see a full gallery of K800 photos here.

With the promise of an Intel powered smartphone having been talked about for months, confirmation of such products came today via CES as the company announced that Motorola and Lenovo would be responsible for producing the world’s first smartphones that will pack these chips.

Motorola will be looking to launch their handset across both sides of the Atlantic while Lenovo will be focusing on a launch in China. Both smartphones will be running Google’s Android OS. Intel will be hoping to make an impact on the market as well as doing their best to compete with chipset rival company ARM, who are already enjoying success in the smartphone industry.

Intel’s Chief Executive Paul Ottelini is reported by The Telegraph to have stated that they already have ‘reference designs’ for tablets and phones which stick to standard features that are found in smartphones on the market today including fast graphics capabilities, speedy web browsing and a cameras of up to 16 megapixels, while emphasizing improved battery life. He also said that their relationship with Lenovo was just the beginning.

Both of the manufacturers’ smartphones will use the scaled down version of the processor Intel uses in its PCs known as the Intel Atom Chip. Motorola will be looking to launch in the months after the summer after gaining regulatory approval, while Lenovo’s device will be called the K800 and will launch in China during the second quarter of this year with the China Unicom network. The chip will also be used in one of Lenovo’s tablet devices.

Specs on both these smartphones are yet to be established but Intel will be hoping for an impressive start in the market in order to make an impact and to take on the might of other already well-established manufacturers in the same field. How much of an impact do you think Intel powered smartphones will have on the market?

Earlier this month we brought you news that LG are readying their new Google TV which will be arriving next year and will be making its debut at CES 2012, which kicks off this week. Now we have news of from another manufacturer, Lenovo who has announced the first ever TV that will be based on the internet giant’s Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, the K91 Smart TV.

What sets this TV aside from the other Google powered versions is that it will run the latest version of the OS as opposed to the earlier version Android Honeycomb. It will join LG’s model at CES along with a whole host of other smart TVs that will be debuting there from manufacturers such as Samsung and Sony.

According to the Telegraph’s reports this Lenovo TV will initially be launching in China with no details on anywhere else it may be making an appearance if it does. It comes equipped with a 5 megapixel webcam, SD card storage, 1GB RAM and will be run by a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. It will also be accompanied by a touchscreen remote control featuring an integrated microphone and voice control functions.

As the Telegraph also points out, CES looks set to have a theme that involves TVs like these that are a crossover of television and computers, accompanied with smartphone looking remote controls. In addition to this new smart TV, Lenovo are also reported to have announced a new tablet, the IdeaTab S2, a device similar to the Asus Transformer Prime. With all these innovative products that have been reported so far, CES is shaping up to be one heck of an event.

What are you most looking forward to at CES this year? What do you think of Lenovo’s Google TV?

A recent review has reveled the shortcomings of the Lenovo IdeaPad U400, which seems to suffer in a number of areas, and it is not only rival brands that are ready to take advantage of this, but also other models from Lenovo, such as the IdeaPad U300. There were high hopes for the Ultrabook, but it seems as though consumers are not buying it, as they are not impressed in any way.

The U400 is meant to offer the best of both worlds, as it has everything the U300 has, but adding an extra inch to the size of the display, separate graphics and an optical drive. For those of you who think that you are buying an Ultrabook here, then Engadget tries to let you down gently, saying that it is not.

The specs of the U400 are set in stone, so there is no way to bump the hardware up. What you get is an Intel Core i3-2330M with a speed of 2.2GHz, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB standard hard drive. However, you can opt for a bigger model with better specs, but once you have made your choice that’s it.

There are a number of departments where we are let down with the U400 compared to its smaller sibling, and that is a much bulkier design, shocking battery life, touchpad doesn’t live up to the hype and the performance is below-par. You are advised to wait and save your money and spend it more wisely, such as on Dell XPS 14z or the Sony VAIO SB. However, if you have your heart set on a Lenovo, then they do have far better options.

Below is a performance table, which Engadget has come up with, comparing it to a number of rival laptops in the U400 class.

These days it is a struggle to keep up with all of the latest and greatest tablet computers, today we will introduce you to two new Lenovo Lepads, these are the 7-inch LePad S2007 and the 10.1-inch LePad S2010.

Sadly we don’t have an official press release or spec listing for you to feast your eyes on, but we know enough to assume that both tablets will be pretty popular offerings if the price is right.

Both of these tablets are said to feature a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor, 1GB of RAM, a 1.3 megapixel camera, dual-more 3G, WiFi (b/g/n we presume) and Android 3.0 Honeycomb. You may be disappointed by the dated flavor of Android, but we are told that an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich will come in the future. Despite the difference in form-factor both tablets feature an IPS display which outputs at 1280 x 800, which should look especially nice on the 7-inch variant (216ppi or thereabouts).

The Lenovo LePad S2007 is said to weigh 360 grams and it’s just 9.7mm thick, the small form-factor results in there being a 3,780mAh battery which allows for up to 8 hours on WiFi. It’s bigger brother, the LePad S2010 weighs 670 grams and is 9.9mm thick, it features a much larger 7,560mAh battery which is said to allow for up to 11 hours on WiFi.

In terms of performance hardware both tablets should be pretty snappy, however nothing compared to Tegra 3 offerings which are beginning to emerge. Also in terms of design neither of these tablets is as light or as thin as competitive devices, which is why we beleive that pricing will really determine the success of these shiny new tablets.

Hopefully we will hear further details regarding specs, features, pricing and a release date soon, when we do we will keep you posted.

Just when you were under the assumption that ASUS would release the first Ice Cream Sandwich tablet aka the Transformer Prime before the end of the year as an exclusive, it looks like there’s a new device which wants to share the Android 4.0 limelight – and that honor falls to Lenovo.

We’ve just heard that the Chinese company will also release an Ice Cream Sandwich before the end of the year, but unlike the Transformer Prime, this one will apparently come pre-loaded with the delights of Ice Cream Sandwich, according to an article over at Engadget.

There’s no official name for the device yet since it isn’t official as such, but there are some juicy specs details to share you. Aside from Ice Cream Sandwich, Lenovo’s tablet will also be packing a state of the art 1.6GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor straight out of NVIDIA’s lab, as well as 2GB of RAM on top, giving consumers some serious firepower in terms of gaming potential.

There’s also a camera on the back of the tablet as standard, but we don’t know what megapixel quality it will be yet. Interestingly, the tablet also comes with a ‘host USB port’, meaning that it is located on the tablet itself rather than on the side – this can be seen in a provided image from Engadget below.

Hopefully we can expect an official announcement from the company sometime this week, as we’re very eager to see full specs of this beast. We are still waiting to see what kind of display Lenovo will supply with this tablet, and what kind of availability we should be looking at. Remember that ASUS said that their Prime tablet will release with Honeycomb 3.2 with an update to Ice Cream Sandwich coming afterwards. Does this now make the Lenovo tablet more favorable?

How would you rate Lenovo’s build quality compared to say ASUS and other leading computer manufacturers – do you rate them or not?

Earlier on this week we informed you about the HP 2000-239WM laptop that you may want to consider picking up during the holiday sales, but now we have another budget model that will definitely interest you as consumers look to find the cheapest, but reasonable models available.

The laptop we are talking about now is the Lenovo 15.6-inch G575-438343U, which you’ll be able to pick up for a very low price during the holiday sales. Lenovo are becoming renowned for their well-built solid computers, and this particular model we have here offers decent specifications at a very good price.

Here’s a quick run-through of specs for the G575: It features a 15.6-inch display with HD glare technology and runs on a 1.3Ghz AMD Dual-Core E-300 Processor with 2GB of RAM backing it up. This model will come with a 250GB hard drive, and offer reasonable battery life with its included 6 cell lithium-ion battery. You’ll be pleased to know that this isn’t a laptop that comes with those pesky ‘Intel Integrated HD graphics’ as you’ll be able to enjoy low-end PC games thanks to the included Radeon HD 6310 graphics card – don’t expect to play Skyrim on optimal settings though as this won’t be possible.

As our title suggests though, one major setback for consumers looking to get this model, is the fact that it won’t come equipped with an HDMI port. This is usually a standard feature in new PC models and allows users to hook their laptop up to the TV, allowing audio to output through the TV as well which is a very useful feature. Sadly though, you won’t to use this with the Lenovo G575-438343U.

How important is this feature to you? Will you still look to pick this model up during the holiday sales? If you have owned a Lenovo in the past, give us your overall impressions of previous devices.

The holiday season is not even here, so someone needs to tell Lenovo that, as they have a host of deals, although they are currently for Lenovo Canada. There are two specials currently running, Halloween and also doorbuster computer deals. The former will run for a while yet, but the latter only lasts up until today. It’s as if Black Friday has come early?

With the doorbuster deals you can save yourself up to 40 percent on home and office laptops. However, to be able to get that huge discount you will have to enter the eCoupon code: BLACKFRIDAYOCT. There are 8 deals in all on the special sale page, with the lowest price starting at just $399.99. This offer is for the IdeaPad G560; the normal cost would have been $849, that’s a saving of $450.

However, the biggest saving is on the IdeaPad Y570, as the retail price is usually $1,599.00, but with the sale and using the eCoupon code you will just have to pay $999.99, that’s a saving of $600.

If you thought those deals were good, then you will be amazed and what Lenovo has in store for you over Halloween in Canada. There are four laptops on offer; these are the ThinkPad X220, ThinkPad T420, ThinkPad Edge E420s and also the ThinkPad T520. The standard prices for these are as follows: $1,814.00, $1,815.00, $1,518.00, and $1,539.00. However, after using eCoupon Code: CAPHALLOWEEN those prices will fall to $946.28, $860.18, $629.10 and $751.73 respectively.

With deals like these you have to wonder what Lenovo has planned for Black Friday?

In the thin laptop market the MacBook Air is probably the market leader, but there are alternatives in the pipeline or already released. Today we have news that ultrabook producers are to keep shipments low to start with in the battle with the MacBook Air.

According to an article on Electronista the first batch of ultrabooks are set to be purposely kept low so companies can test the market. Units such as the Acer Aspire S3, Lenovo IdeaPad U300s and Toshiba Portege Z830 could have production runs of fewer than 50,000 for the first batch.

The companies want to see if there is a market for the ultra portable laptops outside of what Apple has to offer consumers. This follows their experiences they had with Consumer Ultra Low Voltage notebooks in 2010. They are looking to avoid a repeat performance that saw the likes of Acer with its TimelineX, which tried to bridge the gap between netbooks and full size notebooks.

These devices were often not much faster than netbooks as they were equipped with lack luster processors, but were still priced at a premium rate because of their chips and screen size. There is believed to be another ultrabook related meeting being held by Intel on the 14th of this month.

The meeting is thought to look at ways to overcome technical limits that Windows PC makers are facing, and to try and persuade more manufacturers to embrace the idea. Companies had previously complained they could not use cheaper components, and weren’t used to some of the design idea’s that Apple used.

These included the likes of solid state drives, metal bodies, and better battery techniques. There are some who believe the ultrabook is the final chance to push Windows notebook sales that have mainly struggled. The current financial climate around the world could affect Intel’s plans for ultrabooks by up to forty percent by the end of next year.

Analysts also point to the fact that many consumers are shunning notebooks for the likes of the iPad now, which further hits the ultrabook market. Do you think there is a market outside of the MacBook Air for ultra slim notebooks? Or do think that tablet PCs will take over?

We see lots of tablets come and go which attempt to knock the iPad 2 of its pedestal, specs sometimes outdo Apple’s device and prices sometimes undercut it, however the iPad 2 is still regarded by many as the most impressive tablet available today – today we can reveal that Lenovo has taken a slightly different approach and revealed an affordable tablet which will attempt to attract people who don’t have a spare $400+ to spend on a tablet.

This tablet is called the Lenovo IdeaPad A1 and prices will start at $199, as you would probably expect it is not as impressive as more expensive tablets, but we think that the specs are good enough to deliver a pretty rich user experience and let’s face most people will use tablets for simple tasks such as web browsing and social networking – therefore we think that the IdeaPad A1 could attract some attention.

In terms of tech specs you get a 7-inch display which outputs at a resolution of 1024 x 600, a single-core Cortex A8 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, rear and front-facing cameras(front 0.3 megapixels, rear 3.0 megapixels), 8GB, 16GB and 32GB storage options along with WiFi, GPS, microSD and SD memory card slots. The good news is that it will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread and have access to the Android Market – most cheap tablets don’t boast this, which seriously restricts functionality.

The image below is a little hard to see clearly, but if you look closely you can see that there will be four color options available (black, white, blue and pink) and the ability to deliver 7 hours of web browsing from a single-charge, the image also states that there will be Bluetooth connectivity.

You can see Engadget’s hands-on here, they say it isn’t particularly slim, but feels nice in the hand and should be pretty sturdy thanks to its magnesium alloy chassis – we haven’t yet seen any videos which give us an idea of the user experience, therefore we will keep you posted when we do.
