Back on November 23rd Acer held a press conference called Interact where they announced a new laptop / Tablet PC. It is called the Iconia, with the rise in touch screen technology on the likes of the iPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Acer now want to come in on the action.

We have spoken to you about another recent dual touch screen laptop in the Taiji model but how does the Iconia compare? Let’s have a look at the specs of the device and then we can tell a little more. The Iconia obviously has 2 displays at 14” both full touch screens, it has 4GB DDR RAM, 750GB HDD, 1 USB3.0 port, 2 USB 2.0 ports and Windows 7 Home Premium. It also has an Intel core i5 processor.

Naturally with a device like this people will look at the specs and they are not too shabby, but the real selling point to this device is its intricate innovative style that it brings. It has something a little different in its core functionality that is shown in the video clip further down courtesy of CNET.com.

One of the things that interested me was the way the keyboard is thrown up onto the base screen, you put both of your hands on the screen so all 10 fingers and both palms then the keyboard appears as if by magic. It actually recognizes your hands both being placed on it. Now that is cool. It also has another function of when you put one hand down in a similar fashion it brings up what is described as a media wheel and is shown below.

If you missed the conference then don’t worry, you can view some of the clips here. You can expect to pick one of these devices towards the end of December or early in 2011. Acer also showed a new Tablet PC which currently doesn’t have a name or a price associated with it. The tablet will run on the Android platform working with NVIDIA’s Tegra which you can learn more about here. You can see a picture below of the new tablet,

It has been reported by The Sun, that there has been a rise in “toasted skin” conditions caused by laptop users resting devices on their laps for prolonged periods of time.

The report tells of a 12-year-old boy that suffered “a sponge-patterned skin discolouration” on parts of his thighs after several months of long gaming hours each day. A similar effect was found on a student from Virginia, in the U.S. She needed treatment for an irregular skin pattern after her laptop reached temperatures of 52C (125F) on its base, whilst she had it sitting on her lap for up to six hours a day.

“Toasted skin syndrome” and its conditions have now been published in the journal Paediatrics by Swiss researchers. Its is said that it can also be caused by heat sources which may not be hot enough to cause actual burns.

While classed as generally harmless, the condition can permanently darken the skin. In some rare cases can lead to skin cancer and with prolonged periods reduce sperm production. Suggestions are that if you need to work with your laptop on your legs to use a carry case or heatsheild as protection.

It is worth pointing out that the major manufacturers such as Apple,Dell and Hewlett Packard, do warn against use of their laptops in this way. Check out The Sun for more information and tell us if this will change the way you position your portable device?

Panasonic’s range of Toughbook’s have been upping the anti in recent times, with reports that the “worlds lightest 12.1-inch laptop with DVD drive” is also very durable. Weighing in at just 3 pounds, we decided to check out the authenticity of the claim and research proves that the claims were true-say.

The S9 joins the also impressive Toughbook C1, that weighs in at just 3.2 pounds. But the most impressive features of the S9 is how they managed to squeeze a Core i5-520M processor, 2GB RAM, a shock mounted 320GB hard drive and an optical DVD drive for good measure into it’s featherweight laptop shell.

Impressed? Panasonic even go as far as allowing the Toughbook S9 to withstand being dropped from 2.5 foot whilst operating, at the same time as having a spill-resistant keyboard, and taking a maximum of 220 pounds of pressure on its lid and base.

If you are someone who wants a light, compact laptop with all the trimmings, but you also know that on your travels it can take a beating — this is the laptop of choice, until maybe you see the price.

We will get straight to the point, the Panasonic Toughbook S9 will slap your bank balance in the face with a $2,499 retail price. The only thing you have to do now is see if that kind of price justifies the purchase.

A press release with more pictures and information is scheduled soon, so that might help make your decision.

What are your opinions of the Toughbook S9?
