When you look at the current tablet market you do not have to be an expert in the field to know that the iPad 2 is dominating it. To some this is very confusing, as Apple has not given their device the best hardware, and this is something that the upcoming Amazon tablet will have in common with it. Now you may wonder why they would do such a thing, as the iPad is considered to offer the complete package, but so can Amazon – just look at the Kindle.

The eReader is not packed with the best hardware, as the Nook Color and other rivals prove this. However, Amazon has done to the eReader market what Apple has done to the tablet market. So we know that it is more than just hardware, and we believe that Amazon has the tools in place to give the iPad 2 a run for its money. OK, we do not want to get ahead of ourselves here, the upcoming device, which is expected in October will not suddenly topple the iPad 2. However, this could happen in time, as there are suggestions that Amazon is to make its very own tablet.

Now you may be a little confused with this admission, but they will not make the upcoming tablet in October, but there are reports that suggest that they will with next year’s versio. We cannot wait to see if Amazon can do what the likes of Motorola and Samsung has not been able to do, and that is give Apple a run for their money.

eWeek has been looking into this very subject, and have listed in detail why they think Amazon finally has a tablet that can compete with the iPad. The first thing that they point out is the Amazon brand, as it carries a lot of weight. They are right, as they are not just a trusted retailer, but also have great experience when it comes to offering digital content – something that is so important with a tablet device.

Most reports suggest that Amazon will follow Steve Jobs stance and go with a 9 to 10-inch screen, any smaller is seen as pointless. We cannot say for certain which version of Android will be running the Amazon tablet, if they want any chance of success then it will need to be Ice Cream Sandwich. The reason for this is because it will be able to offer greater app support – this is considered most important if they stand any chance of competing fairly with the iPad.

We could go on about so many reasons why Amazon will have the best Android tablet, but the key is price. It is a certainty that Amazon will offer their tablet at a cheaper price than not only the iPad 2, but most of Android tablets with a similar screen size.

If we are to believe the rumors then we have just three months to wait to see how well the Amazon tablet will perform against the iPad 2. However, Apple might have something to say about that, as there is talk of an iPad 2 HD or Plus version coming towards the end of the year as well.

From March 6 AT&T have said they will be stocking Amazon’s Kindle device in its retail stores across the country. AT&T certainly has interesting timing with Apple’s launch of the iPad 2 in a couple of days, as Amazon could stop distribution of Kindle software for iOS devices.

Joe Wilcox from betanews is reporting that buyers will now have the choice of the lower priced Kindle when thinking of purchasing an iPad. This retail option for the Kindle is not new, as Best Buy and the Microsoft store in San Diego both stock the device.

The Kindle has been successful with people buying it direct from Amazon, but it has also benefited from being in retail stores according to Stephen Baker, NPD’s vice present of industry analysis. He said that “more customers can see and become aware of it”.

Amazon has been talking about record Kindle and eBook sales, but as of yet haven’t released any actual figures. AT&T president of emerging devices Glenn Lurie said “we are confident the Kindle will be an attractive addition to our in store connected devices lineup.”

But Baker doesn’t think they will be much of a success and said “I don’t expect them to sell very many”, and used their netbook distribution as an example which died quickly. But customers who were thinking of an iPad for reading eBooks, the Kindle has appeal with its lower pricing. The 3G model costs $189 compared to $499 for the cheapest iPad.

And later this year Apple wants Amazon to offer eBooks via the Kindle application instead of a web browser. This will mean Amazon will have to pay thirty percent of sales to Apple, so Amazon and other publishers will have to raise prices or take a hit on profits.

Do you think the Kindle will be a success in AT&T stores?

Since Amazon first brought us the Kindle, eReaders have taken off. But Amazon is seeing more competition from the likes of the Nook, which we recently compared to the Kindle. Now there is another eReader available which is less than half the price of the Kindle.

British retailer Asda has the View Quest Mediabox 5 inch eReader available for an astonishing £52, according to an article on TechEye. There are also features which are not available on the Kindle like the ability to store and view photos. A backlight will allow owners to read at night, and the device has a built in voice recorder.

Just like the Kindle books can read in landscape and portrait, and a power saving mode will improve battery life. Asda say the device can also play films as well, and there are offers of buy one get one free on certain book titles. High street retailer WH Smith also has a number of eReaders, and has a device which looks pretty similar to the one that Asda offer, but priced at £64.99. But at the time of writing is out of stock.

You can see the Asda e-Reader for yourself by clicking the link here. The device already has one review from someone who already owns one, and gives it five stars.

Would you consider the Asda eReader?

Recently we have been doing comparisons between various Kindle models and other eReaders; we also reported the news on an issue found with one of the leather cases. The cases are causing the machine to freeze and turn its self off.

Despite the case problems and any others they may have encountered since their release, Amazon Kindle will have made a lot of money this year. The profits were much higher than Kindle foresaw, in fact they were around 60% higher.

To give you an idea of just how popular these devices are, Apple sold 7.6 million of their iPads this year between the months of April and September and Amazon Kindle has sold 8 million units this year. We can let you know that this isn’t an official figure. Amazon don’t normally inform anyone of their figures.

This puts them in a superb position, especially with the Amazon App store; this adds personal value to your device, which ever you have. Currently there are 3 models being retailed by Amazon Kindle, these are the WiFi/3G model at $189, the WiFi only model for $139 and finally the larger screened model for $379.

You can read more about the figures recorded for the Amazon Kindle over at PCWorld by clicking here.

Are you surprised by these figures for the Kindle eReader? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

If you are looking to buy an eReader this Christmas you may want to check out every offering currently available, recently we came across a very useful website which lists pretty much all of the ebook readers currently available, not only does it list the devices but the chart is interactive and allows you to compare rivaling products side-by-side.

If you want to buy one of Amazon’s Kindle eReaders you should check out this side-by-side comparison, this chart compares the Kindle Wi Fi to the Kindle DX and Kindle 2 3G. In the comparison a lot of factors are taken into account, such as screen size, weight, storage, battery life, review scores, price, file formats and much more, we have embedded an image below showing you a quick glimpse of what you can see.

When you look at the complete chart of eReaders and sort by expert rating the Kindle Wi-Fi comes first, the Kindle DX come second and the Kindle 2 3G comes third, which shows just how dominant Amazon’s devices really are, however there is some stiff competition from the Sony Reader Touch Edition PRS-600 and the Barnes & Noble Nook 3G + Wi-Fi.

FindTheBest’s site lets you see full details on all of the products by clicking on the relevant product name, Kindle Wi-Fi here, Sony Reader Touch Edition PRS-600 here and the Barnes & Noble Nook 3G + Wi-Fi here, however I found it best if you compare all three products side-by-side here.

The interactive chart allows you to really see what you want to see, I am sure that if you have a play with the chart (here) yourself you will be able to find the vital information you need to know, from charge time to shades of grey FindTheBest’s chart has it all.

Here are a couple more interesting comparison’s to check out, click on them to see the charts.

Whenever you mention an eReader to people the first device that comes into their head is the Kindle from Amazon – why is that? There are a number of other good eReader devices on the market, such as the Literati from Sharper Image. Some of you might not have of heard of this new model, as it has only been on the market since last month; so how does it compare to the top selling eReader?

The Literati has a 7-inch display, so is already 1-inch larger than the Amazon offering. The price started at $159, but you can be certain that this will drop as we have now entered the holiday shopping season. David Carnoy from Cnet News talks of some great offers to be had right now, so visit their website to learn more on these.

The design of the Literati is a lot like the Alex eReader with its elongated shape, so does not look as elegant as the Kindle. Do not try to operate the device by touching the screen, as that will not work. You have to do things the old fashioned way – that means touching some buttons people.

However, this is something that Kindle users will already be familiar with; you have to remember that these are not tablet devices, so is very limited in their technology. When it comes to having a library of books at the touch of a few buttons, then these devices cannot be beat.

Choosing between the two will be a tough job, the decision will come down to two things, which design is best, and how much you are willing to pay; the choice is yours. Remember there are other alternatives, such as the Pandigital Novel 9-inch eReader and the Nook Color.

While watching a live blog of the 2010 BlackBerry Developer Conference I was shocked for two reasons. The first was the announcement of the PlayBook tablet device, and the second was that a Kindle app had also been announced.

Most of you with a BlackBerry smartphone will know that a Kindle app is already available, offering you access to online books from Amazon. So once owners have the PlayBook in their hands in the early part of 2011, they will have instant access to Kindle books like iPad users currently enjoy.

According to Paul Miller from Engadget, he reports that the Kindle app for RIM’s PlayBook will be free, as it is on other devices. Once the app has been downloaded and installed users will have access to over 700,000 books – beat that iBooks.

We agree that some of the books from the Kindle Store can be on the expensive side, but how nice is it to have a digital library of your collection? Will the Kindle be one of the first apps that you download on PlayBook?

For those looking for a great deal on a range of different products many of you choose to go to Woot. Today they have a great deal of the day – the Kindle Wireless Reading Device 6-inch, which strangely enough is much cheaper than being sold on Amazon.

The price that Woot is selling the Kindle device for is just $149.99 compared to just under $200 on Amazon. You might wonder why we would be talking about this – the simple reason is that the world biggest online store has just acquired Woot.

The idea of deal of the day certainly took off, with consumers being offered their favorite devices for a much lower price than other online stores. The Kindle device on offer today will not last long so you had best grab yours now.

If you take a look at the video below you will see a funny video of a Screaming Monkey rapping all about Amazon buying Woot. The video goes on for two minutes and 46 seconds, so bear with it – it’s worth it.

In the last couple of years eReaders have become more and more popular, at the moment Amazon’s Kindle devices are at the forefront of the market, therefore it is no surprise that their Kindle for PC software has also become very popular.

Amazon have recently revealed that their Kindle for PC software will now come pre-installed on a few of Asus’ notebook/netbook models, such as three different ultrathin notebooks, the 1005PE, UL30A-X5K and UL30VT-X1K.

Just in case your are unaware of the Kindle for PC software it is a pretty simplistic idea, delivered in an easy to use application, you can read and buy books on your PC (no Kindle required), or if you prefer you can use Whispersync to access books, note and marks etc from your Kindle device.

Personally I find this deal quite strange as Asus have been doing their best to impact the eReader market with their own devices, which directly compete with Amazon’s Kindle.

If you would like to try out the software yourself it can be downloaded for free here, for more details regarding the Asus deal check out the link below.
