Despite being released last year, Killzone 3 remains a keen topic of interest among a lot of PlayStation 3 owners, ever since Sony revealed cross-platform capabilities with the now released PS Vita handheld system.

Sony unveiled that it was possible to play Killzone 3 on the go via Remote Play on the Vita, but unfortunately Killzone 3 is still nowhere to be seen on the Vita and Sony’s reluctance to advertise remote play for the Vita launch is perhaps a little on the worrying side.

While we await for the glorious occasion to arise, Sony has conjured up a cunning strategy to make sure that Killzone 3 is not forgotten about forever. It has been revealed that Killzone 3 will be releasing on the PlayStation Store, but only the multiplayer portion of the game, not single-player.

It turns out that this will be a free download and Sony has put a level cap in place so that when players reach that cap and want to continue playing multiplayer, then can do so by paying a fee to unlock the full multiplayer mode, as detailed by VG247. We’re not sure what you think about this but we think it is a fantastic idea and clever way by Sony to see if there is still a lot of interest in Killzone 3 or not.

You may argue that you could just head out and buy the full game with single-player on the cheap now, but free is free in our books and this will be right in front of you and available to download with one click. We’re guessing that Sony sees this as some kind of experiment and they may decide to make this a regular feature for older games if this proves successful. There is definitely no harm in trying from Sony’s point of view and it could breath a new lease of life into those multiplayer servers.

It’s worth pointing out that this has only been announced for the US at the moment, but it would be pretty outrageous if we didn’t see this appear on the EU store as well. If you are a big fan of Killzone, let us know your thoughts on this interesting move by Sony. Are you willing to jump back into Killzone 3 multiplayer for free? If YOU plan to play on after the level cap, you’ll have to pay $15 and that includes access to all maps – a reasonable price or not?

If you have been tuning into this year’s Tokyo Game Show coverage, you will know that a significant portion of the event was reserved for another detailed blowout on the imminent PlayStation Vita handheld. What you may have missed though, is the fantastic-looking remote play feature with the PlayStation 3.

Although we knew that the Vita would feature some sort of cross platform play with its bigger brother, we had yet to see this in action, until now that is. During the Vita unveil at the ongoing Tokyo Game Show event in Japan, Sony demonstrated how some PlayStation 3 titles will be playable using the handheld, and the title that gave an example of this was none other than Killzone 3.

The connection from PlayStation 3 to Vita can be achieved either through WiFi or over the internet (3G) from potentially any location in the world. The gameplay looked very smooth indeed, with no signs of major lag appearing to affect gameplay in any way. Another impressive feature is that the Vita will be able to switch the control scheme from the PlayStation 3 game that you are playing, to the different button layout on the Vita. For example, a standard dual-core PS3 pad features back shoulder buttons, whereas the Vita does not. Instead the Vita replicates these buttons on the stylish touch trackpad located underneath the device which should provide a similar experience whilst using.

Remote play between PS3 and Vita was demonstrated on Killzone 3 only, but we’re excited at the other games which will be compatible with Sony’s new pick up and play features. However, the company were keen to stress that the technology is still being developed, so it could be a long while yet until we start to see remote play available to the public.

We’ve found a very brief video on YouTube showing a snippet of the new features in action, but we’ll add more footage when we get it. Are you impressed by the new remote play features, or are you worried that lag will ultimately prove a difficult problem to overcome? If this really kicks off, imagine being able to play a game like Skyrim on the bus or train, or even the toilet if the situation arises – the possibilities could be endless for the Vita and it could prove to be Sony’s main selling point with the Vita.

We have some really exciting news for all you Killzone 3 fans out there now, as we’ve just discovered that Guerilla Games will be releasing the new 1.10 patch at some stage today. The latest update introduces a few new features, as well as a large number of bug fixes.

As noted by Victor Zuylen over at killzone.com, the new features introduced within the 1.10 patch include squad only chat, although this is still an experimental feature so it may not always work as expected, and the ability to play music / audio from your PlayStation 3 during multiplayer matches.

The update has also introduced a number of Marksman improvements including an increase to the cloak rippling effect. Players will also find that the transition from uncloaked to cloaked has now been extended. Meanwhile, the patch has also fixed a number of graphical glitches in multiplayer.

It has also fixed the statistics screen, so players should now find that the progression bars update correctly, as well as an issue where a squad invite would send gamers to the incorrect squad. The update has also fixed a couple of ammo crates that were unreachable from certain sides in The Junkyard map.

You can read about the other fixes, changes and features via the killzone.com link. Are you happy with the changes that have been made?

Just yesterday we announced that the latest Killzone 3 update (patch 1.07) would be released on April 6th, which of course means that it will be available at some point today. Now it appears that the update isn’t the only thing that is being released today, as fans also have a new DLC pack to look forward to.

As Tamoor Hussain over on the computerandvideogames.com website recently reported, the new ‘Steel Rain’ DLC pack – which will be available to download from the PlayStation Store – provides players with two brand new multiplayer maps that have both been inspired by areas within the single player campaign.

The first of these new maps is Junkyard, a Guerrilla Warfare map that sees both Jet-Packs and Exoskeletons battling it out in a rain-drenched trash processing facility. The second new map is Stahl Arms, a Warzone map that takes place in a Helghan weapons manufacturing plant.

According to Bill Hess over at attackofthefanboy.com, it’s only PlayStation 3 owners in Europe that are getting the new ‘Steel Rain’ map pack today. Thos who live in North America unfortunately have to wait until April 12th to start playing the new maps. PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to download the pack for free.

Are you looking forward to playing the two new maps?

For those of you that checked in to see our post on the preliminary notes to Killzone 3‘s patch 1.07, you will be excited to find out that the full list of changes have been announced officially from the Killzone 3 site and also we can tell you when the patch will come into play.

The patch will make some changes which mean that gamers will enjoy a whole list of gameplay fixes that eliminate the bugs that previously caused a few annoyances in the game. The game should also function better for some online modes and for you glitchers out there that love annoying casual gamers by jumping out of the level, you may find that some areas have been changed such as the Kaznan Jungle tree glitch.

Perhaps the most advantageous of all the changes for gamers are the improvements to the functionality of the online modes. Guerrilla Games‘ developers have made an effort in fixing some of the problems that gamers had when trying to join a warzone game and had there game crash. Similar changes mean that online gameplay should no longer be dysfunctional and should make all Killzone 3 owners a lot happier with their game.

The patch goes live April 6 and you can take a look at the full list of changes here. Tell us what you think the best changes are and if you are happy or sad about the changes to some of the levels that stop you glitching.

One you have received the patch let us know if the game runs better in the comments section below.

If you own a PlayStation 3 console and a copy of the Killzone 3 game, I think we have some pretty exciting news for you. Guerrilla Games has just revealed preliminary notes for its upcoming Killzone 3 patch, which the developer is hoping to release in the first week of April.

Not only does the upcoming 1.07 patch contain fixes for a number of problems, but according to Envisager over at vissy.co.uk it also provides a feature that many a gamer has been waiting for – Custom Games. However, it appears that this feature will be rolled out in two phases.

The first phase – which is included in the 1.07 patch – will provide players with the option of creating unranked games, with a choice of map, game mode, missions (Warzone only) and mission time (Warzone only), as well as being able to invite squad members / enemy squad leader.

Phase 2 of the Custom Games, which will be rolled out in a future patch, will provide gamers with several options such as turning friendly fire on and off, turning brutal melee on and off, adjusting the kill count for Guerrilla Warfare and configurable abilities, skills, ribbons and weapons.

The 1.07 patch has also fixed a crash that occurred when joining a Guerrilla Warfare Clan match, lowered the increased accuracy ribbon effectiveness, fixed a crash that happened when players joined a Warzone game and added a ‘mute all’ button.

You can read about the other changes via the vissy.co.uk website. Are you happy that the upcoming patch is bringing the Custom Games feature?

We have seen a fair share of hacks for Microsoft’s Kinect camera hardware over the last few months, but perhaps none more exciting than this. The device has now been hacked to work on the Sony PlayStation 3 believe it or not, and we have a video to show you which proves it.

Credit for the hack goes to Shantanu Goel, as he has provided a video which shows the PS3′s XMB being controlled solely by Kinect. The code for the hack is in pre-alpha status at the moment, but the video clearly shows what is possible with the new trick.

The video even shows Killzone 3 operating on Kinect motion controls too – how impressive is that folks? You can see that a variety of hand gestures allows the user to navigate through the menus of Killzone 3, for example a scrolling motion to browse through the options and so on. The in-game motion tracking isn’t as impressive, but we’re sure that this will be fine tuned in a later build.

It’s pretty wacky stuff. Who would have thought that Microsoft’s Kinect would work on a piece of Sony hardware? Check out the video below and let us know your thoughts on it. Does the PS3 really do everything?!

So Killzone 3 is already out on the PlayStation 3 and Crysis 2 is set to follow it shortly at the end of March on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Talking about the PS3 version specifically, we’ve heard whispers that Killzone 3 is currently the best looking game on the console at the moment, but can Crysis 2 match it in the graphics department?

If you have been keeping up to date with the PS3 release of Crysis 2, you’ll know that there was some controversy surrounding the demo release and the fact that Crytek decided to pull it, to iron out some technical issues that they discovered after releasing it.

Crytek has recently issued a statement to those who believe that the graphics featured in Crysis 2 aren’t as good as those seen on the Xbox 360. Here is what Executive Producer Nathan Camarillo said in a recent interview as reported from PlayStation Lifestyle:

”I’ve gone on the record saying that if you stick PS3 and 360 side by side I would challenge anyone to find any meaningful difference. I don’t see it at all.”

With that debate aside, we’ve found a useful video for you to take a look at which gives you an idea just how good the graphics are in Crysis 2. This video is taken from the PlayStation 3 version of the game. After watching it, let us know your opinions on the graphics. Are they really as bad as everyone is making out, or do you think they top those seen in Killzone 3? There are some early reviews for Crysis 2 here if you missed them last time.

Guerrilla Games’ Killzone 3 game may well have taken the top spot away from Call of Duty: Black Ops when it was first released, but it doesn’t appear to have left a good impression with everyone. In fact, some even suggested that the Killzone 3 game could do with some improvements.

One element of the game that appears to have disappointed gamers the most is the multiplayer mode. RayeD_X over at rayedx.blogspot.com has recently provided a list of reasons why he hated Killzone 3’s multiplayer, starting with the fact that the controls have now changed

Another reason RayeD_X doesn’t like the multiplayer mode is the fact that they’ve made the maps bigger, and reduced the amount of players in a match from 32 to 24 to make the KZ3 game more like Battlefield: Bad Company 2. The addition of a matchmaking system is another reason given.

RayeD_X also claims that everyone in the Killzone 3 multiplayer is aiming down their sights from a 2 meter distance, which was only used to hit someone from far away in Killzone 2. RayeD_X described both the new clan system and the multiplayer trophies as a joke.

For example, if players win a match in all three Killzone 3 multiplayer modes they receive a gold trophy, which RayeD_X says is too easy!! Other reasons inlcude the graphics looking cartoonish, the menu looking annoying and the fact that you can’t throw a grenade while running like you could in Killzone 2.

See what other reasons RayeD_X gave for not liking Killzone 3 multiplayer over on the rayedx.blogspot.com website. What are your impressions of the Killzone 3 multiplayer mode? You can read Daniel Chubb’s hands-on review of the Killzone 3 game here.

Guerrilla Games’ Killzone 3 may have received some pretty impressive reviews since launching last month, but a few nagging issues have left some online players frustrated. The developer responded by releasing a patch for the game, which was meant to have fixed all the issues.

However, according to a recent article by Jonathan Leack over on the playstationlifestyle.net website, the patch (v1.04) appears to have created more issues. Many gamers have reported major problems since downloading the patch a couple of days ago.

Among the problems that users have been experiencing are disconnections mid-game, severe lag and network connection problems, which makes it very hard to join a game. Guerilla Games has now stated that they are currently working on addressing the said issues.

The new v1.04 patch is said to include fixes for both lag and network errors 8001, 8013 and 10002, as well as a fix for an incorrect message that occurred when players were attempting to join a Clan game that an online friend was currently playing in.

It also includes improvements to the Killzone 3 gameplay. For example, players are now said to have more stamina by default, the sprint length has been increased – although the recharge timer has been adjusted to compensate – and the range in which friendly players can be revived has been increased.

You can read more about the v1.04 patch through the playstationlifestyle.net website. Have you been experiencing any of the said problems since downloading the new patch for Killzone 3? Daniel Chubb got to spend some hands-on time with Killzone 3 recently, read his review here.
